This. invention relates to devices for blowing the sawdust away from a board being sawed by a carpenters handsaw so that the sawdust will be kept from obscuring the line along which he is sawing.

The principal objects of the invention are to provide improvements in such devices whereby the device will be compact, efficient, and easy to attach to any handsaw. Other features and advantages of the improvement will appear in the following description and accompanying drawings.

In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a side perspective view of a carpenters handsaw with my improved sawdust blower attached.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section of Fig. l as seen from along the line 2-2 thereof.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail showing the folding operating lever.

Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the operating lever as seen from the line l l of Fig. 3.

In further detail I is the saw blade, 2 the usual wooden handle secured to the blade and provided with a gripping portion 3 adapted to be gripped by the hand 4 of carpenter with his fingers passing through the hand opening 5, while secured to the flat outer surface of the handle as by screws or nails 6 is a sheet metal bracket 1 with ears 20 bent outwardly to form supports to which a lever 9 is transversely pivoted as at III.

This lever 9 has a long portion extending across the handle portion 2 of the saw and overlying at its end a soft rubber bulb I l which has a fiat bottom I: seated against the side of the saw blade below the handle, while the short end of the lever (9) is turned slightly upward at its outer end and normally rests against a cam l3 which is secured to a shaft l4 rotatably mounted in ears 2| projecting from the bracket 1.

Shaft I 4 extends substantially at right angles to lever 9 toward the normal thumb position of the hand which holds the saw and. carries at its end a thumb lever l which may be easily reached by the thumb Hi to give it a slight push to thereby turn the shaft I4 and swing cam l3 upwardly to raise the short end 9' of the lever so that the long end 9 will compress the soft rubber bulb II and cause a quick puff of air to come out of a nozzle I! or other suitable opening at the side of the bulb, and as indicated by the diverging lines 30 of Fig. 1.

Cam [3 may be double ended as at l3 so that it will lift the short end of the lever whichever way the shaft I4 is operated by the thumb lever l5 and either end of the cam will form a limit stop against the bracket or attaching plate I.

Also to be noted is that the resiliency of the soft rubber bulb functions as a spring to restore the lever 9 to starting position with its short end lying flat upon the cam l3 as shown in Fig. 2, whenever the thumb lever is released.

The outer end of lever 9 is preferably secured to the bulb H as by any suitable means, here indicated as by a small screw l8 vulcanized in the top of the bulb and secured to the lever as by a nut l 9. This permits rotary adjustment of the air bulb so that its jet opening can be adjusted to any desired angle for best blowing away of the sawdust.

As ordinarily shaft M will extend some little distance from its cam it is preferably additionally supported for rotation by an outer car 22 at the end of a right angle extension 1' of the bracket plate I as shown best in Figs. 1 and 3.

A feature of the invention is that thumb lever i5 folds down to facilitate packing the saw in a tool chest. This is shown in the drawings wherein a hub 23 is secured to the outer end of shaft M, as by a pin 24, and is provided with an.

upwardly extending fiat lug 25 to which the lever 15 is pivoted as by a pin 26 so that the lever may be folded over to the dotted line position indicated in Fig. 3. Pin 26 is preferably a shoulder rivet as indicated and interposed between its head and lever I5 is a split spring washer 21 to frictionally hold the lever in open or closed position. Also, a heel 28 on the lever forms a stop against hub 23 to determine the levers open position.

With the construction as set out it will be seen that whenever the sawdust accumulates objectionably on a board being sawed, lever l5 may be moved in either direction by reaching it with the thumb of the hand holding the saw, and a puff of air from the rubber bulb will blow it off. It will be evident from the description that various changes in details may be made within the scope of the invention, also that the air bulb instead of being round may be square or any other shape and with ribbed or bellows-like walls, and may be made of any flexible material other than rubber, and may have a spring to assist in its recovery if not sufficiently resilient in itself. I therefore claim:

1. A sawdust blower for a carpenter's handsaw comprising a saw blade and handle therefor, a compressible soft rubber air chamber adapted to be supported on the saw blade and provided with an air outlet directed to eject air adjacent the teeth of the saw blade, a rock lever pivoted to a fixed point on the handle and with one end arranged to overlie the air chamber for compressing the same when the lever is rocked, a shaft revolvably supported on the handle extending laterally with respect to the other end of said 7 lever toward the position of a hand holding the handle of the saw, an operating lever on the outer end of said shaft adapted to be reached by the thumb of the holding hand for rocking said shaft, and a cam on said shaft arranged to engage said other end of said lever.

2. In the construction as set out in claim 1 a bracket supporting the pivoted rock lever and said shaft as an attaching unit and provided with a flat base plate adapted for securing directly to the outer side of the saw handle and means securing said rubber air chamber to the outer end of said rock lever.

3. In the construction as set out in claim 1 a bracket supporting the pivoted rock lever and said shaft as an attaching unit provided with a base adapted for securing to the outer side of the saw handle and means pivotally securing said rubber air chamber to the outer end of said rock lever in a manner to provide for angular adjustment of the air outlet of said air chamber relative to said rock lever.

4. In the construction as set out in claim 1 means pivotally mounting said operating lever for swinging the lever to a position substantially parallel to said shaft.
