Description

(N0 Model.) J. H. WOODBER-RY, J. N. 1VIGCOLLOM & T. BILDERBACK.
WASHING MAGHINE. N0. 246,268. Patented Aug. 23,1881.
W'I T.N' ES SE S NI'IE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. WOODBERRY, JASPER N. MCOOLLOM, AND THOMAS BILDERBAOK, OF MULBERRY GROVE, KANSAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPEOIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 246,268, dated August 23, 1881.
Application filed June 9, 1881.
I all whom it may concern Be in known that we, JOHN H. VVOODBERRY, JASPER N. M0O0LLOM, and THOMAS BILDER- BACK, all of Mulberry Grove, in the county of (lrawford und Stute 0f Kansas, have invented certain new and nseful Im provementsin VVashing-Machines; ancl we hereby declare that the fbllowing is zu full, elear, and exact description of the invention, whioh Will enable others 10 skilled in t he art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, whieh form a parb of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertieal section 0f onr improved washing-rnaehine, und Fig. 2 is a tmnsverse vertical section 0f the snme.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Our invention has relation t0 reciprocatingrubber washing-machines; nn'cl it consists in the improvements hereinafter more f'ully described, und particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed dmwings,Ais the suds-box 01 concave, which has a b0ttom, B, 0f zinc 01 galvanized sheet-iron, vertical splash-bonrds C O, 0ne at nach end, stationary rubbing-slats b Z), and legs o1 supports a a.
The reciprocating rubber, which is 0f the 0 nsnal shape to fit the eoncave has a ren1ovable transverse shaft, I), the ends of whieh project 011 b0th sides, so es t0 form trnnnions, which ride in vertical recessed bearings d d in the sides 0f the sude-box, thus permitting 5 the rubber to acljnst itself vertically according t0 the qunntity 0f clothes in the box.
The sides E of the rubber have euch a series of apertures, e e, arranged in a vertieal line one above another, for the insertion of the adjust- 40 able trnnnion-shaft D, so as t0 regulate the stroke 0f the rnbber and its operating-arms F F, whioh nre united ab their upper end by a cross-bar, I, fqrming the handle. The anns F F extend d0wn int0 the body 0f the rnbber,
4 5 where they are securecl upon its sides E E, and are in like manner as these perforated in a line With the apertures e e, for the Insertion of ehe adjustable trunnionshaft D.
(N0 model.)
The t0p of the rubber is covered wit;h Lw0 sheets 01 lenves 0f zinc, G G, which-extend a little 0ut 0ver the rubber ab both ends, as shown as g g in Fig. l, and inside 0f the rubber, between its sides E E, are placezl two shields or deflectors, H H, set ab an angle t0 0ne another and to Ehe top sheets, G, 0f abont forty-five degrees 01 m0re orless. These deflectors do not extend all the way down t0 the bottom of Lhe rubber, but leave an open spaee, h, between their lower edge and the slats Wln'ch constitute the bottorn part 0f the rubber.
When the rubber is rocked 01 reciprocnted in operating the mnchine the deflectors H H und top shields, G, witzh their projecting ledges g, will thoroughly agitate the snds and wat;er in the box, thus greatly facilitnting the cleansing 0f the clothes as they are being rubbed by euusing a constant splashing and cirenlation 0f the suds. AI; the same time injury to Ih6 clothes is prevented, as the deflectors or agitat0rs H (l0 n0t 001ne into contaet with them, 7o the slats 0f the rubber acting an a guard 01 protector.
Having thus described 0m invention, we claim ahd desire t0 secure by Letters Patent 0f the United Statesl. In a reciprocnting rubber washing-machine, a rubber provided With the t0p shields or covers, G G, having projecting ledges g g, as shown and set forbh.
2. In a reciprocating rubber washing-machine, a rubber provided with the top shields 0r covers, G G, having projecting ledges g g and inside deflectors or wings, H H, constrcbetl and arranged substantially es 2md for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that-we elaim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto affixed 0m signatnres in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. WOODBERRY. JASPER N. MCCOLLOM. THOMAS BILDERBACK.
