Description
. amen JOHN W. HORN, OF EDNS RIDGE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specificafion forming part of Letters Patent No. I 93,957, dated August 7, 1877; application filed May 31, 1877.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN V. HOR-N, of Edens Ridge, in the county of Sullivan and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Washing-Machines; and
' I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
In the accompanying drawings, A designates an inclined wash-box, supported at one endby a beam or cross-block, A and at the other end by slanting legs or supports A Th lower end of said box is entirely elosed but the upper end has an opening, a, extending entirely acrossits Iower part, to allow the outward extension 'of thehandle end of a sliding plunger-frame, B, Which works within the box. Said end is provided With a cross-rang, 1), which can be conveniently grasped by the operators bauds. A
The lower end of said frame is provided with a pounder-casing, C. The front or operating face of said poudencasing is open and provided With cross-rangs or friction-bars G forming a pocket, 0 to hold small articles of linen to be washed, and soap, &c. Said front is also inclined.
The rear of the pounder-casing is at right angles to the bottom of the box, and is provided with a valve, D, which prevents the escape of water as the pounder-casing descends, but allows water -to fiow into and below said pounder-casin g to avoid suction when the same is withdrawn.
E designates a door in the top of the box for the insertion and removal of the fabrics to be washed, and E a button for fastening the same.
The movement of the pounder-casing in the box is controlled by inclined guides F on the inside of said box.
The upper part of the pounder-casing 0 is not covered, being separated by cover or partition G from the lower part thereof.
I am aware that a tubular plunger provided With a valve has heretofore been used in combination With stationary bars, a water-chamber, and an adjustable partition, as shown in Letters Patent N 0. 166,460, granted to Joseph Hollingsworth, dated August 10, 1875, and I therefore lay no claim to such invention.
What I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
The inclined washbox A, having guides F and slot a, in cornbination With the plungerframe-B and pounder O, open at its top, and provided With bars 0 partition G, pocket C, and valve D, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my manne in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. HORN. Witnesses:
JOHN FAIN, A. J. BROWN.
