Description

V UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
JEAN WIOKERSHEIMER, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
COMPOUND ,FOR PRESERVING HIDES AND SKINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,260,-dated August 23, 1881,
Application filed September 29, 1880. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEANWIOKERSHEIMER, of the city of Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented a new and useful compound, the composition ofwhich and the manner of using are fully set forth in the following specification.
The invention relates to that class of compounds which are used to protect and preserve raw skins and hides from the attacks of insects and the decay attendant upon such things.
The invention will be understood as set forth in the following specification and claim.
To prepare the compound, proceed as f0llows: Dissolve in two (2) liters of water, over fire, fifty grams of common salt, ten (10) grams of saltpeter, and one hundred and forty to one hundred and sixty grams of alum, and cool down the solution. Then dissolve in two hundred (200) grams of methylalcohol twenty (20) grams of carbolic acid. Mix this solution with the aforesaid one and add one (1) gram of thymol.
Owing to the preponderance of alum in this solution, it needs to be shaken up every time it is used, as the alum is apt to settle.
The compound is applied by sponging or brushing it on, or the hides and skins may be dipped in it.
In another application for patent I have described and claimed substantially these ingredients, but they are in such widely-different proportions as to make them inapplicable to the purposes herein set forth.
What I claim is- A compound for protecting raw skins and hides, consisting of methyl-alcohol, carbolic acid and thymol, and a solution of common salt, saltpeter, and alum, alum being the chief ingredient, all substantiallyin the proportions set forth.
This specification signed by me this 9th day of September, 1880.
