IMPROVEMENT lN MOTH-PRO OF COMPOSITIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,945, dated February 22, 1876; application filed January 18, 1876.

Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. HALL, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, and JOHN KEN ELL, of
the city and county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Moth-Proof Composition; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same:
The invention relates to that class of preventives which are employed to deter moths from attacking furs, Woolen goods, and pic tures.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
We form a compound of the following ingredients in about the proportions stated, viz: Alcohol and turpentine, equal parts, g gallon; pure tar, ,1; gallon; spirits ot'campl1or,l ounce; essence of mirbane, 1 ounce; essence of citronella, 1 ounce; essence of bitter almonds, 1 ounce; extract of cedar-wood, 1 ounce.
The pure tar is first dissolved and then thoroughly mixed with the other ingredients, when the whole is ready for use.
It is applied to the fur, picture, or Woolen fabric with a brush or by sprinkling, or it may be applied in the same manner to a wrapper or envelope in which the article is inclosed.
The pure tar is obtained by refining crude tar until the oil and other impurities are eliminated, and a hard, thick, and gummy product left.
' What we claim as new is- A compound of alcohol, pure tar, spirits of camphor, essence of mirbane, citronella, bitter almonds, and extract of cedar-wood, in about the proportions specified.
