This invention relates to a spray gun of the type utilizing compressed air for atomizing the spray material and particularly to such a spray gun in which the air stream passing therethrough is divided into .two parts, one primarily for atomiz- Ying the material and the other for use in forming the spray discharge flattening jets.
A principal purpose of this invention is the provision of simple compact means for dividing the air. z
f Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved nozzle design.
A further object of the invention is to provide an easily adjustable retainer for the material valve packing and such a retainer that occupies a minimum space and also contributes to the good appearance of the spray gun. l Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent upon reading the following description with reference to the drawing in which:

Near its rearward end the needle valve I0 has a cylindrical enlargement II. The forward face of the enlargement receives the rearward needle opening thrust of iingers I2 which extend downwardly in -straddling relation to the needle from the hub I3 of the trigger I4. The latter is pivotally mounted on the stud I5. Against the rearward face of the enlargement I I is tensioned the needle closing spring I6. This is housed within the adjustable screw I"I which also acts as a stop for the opening movement of the needle. In addition to the ngers I2 the trigger has a depending cam-like ange I8 whi-ch bears again-st a cylindrical plug I9. The latter is reciprocably located within a corresponding bore in the gun body. The plug I9 h as a deep transverse cut-away section 2| which provides space for the needle. Below the plug I9 and actuated by it is air valve 22. This valve controls the flow of air from connection 2 to passages 23 and 24 leading to the forward face of the spray gun body I surrounding the exterior portion of insert 6.
The air from thesel two passages 23 and 24 is maintained in separate paths .by the divider ring 25. This ring has a flat annular forward face 25 which has a central bore 21. The bore is cylindrical in shape except at its bottom where it has a narrow inwardly extending ange 28. The edge of theflange is arc shaped terminating at its ends in flats lying in a common horizontal plane. The bore 21- ts over a cylindrical rib` 29 on the insert Ii.` The rib is flattened at its top and bottom and the at-s at the ends of the arcuate angeZB of the ring 25 iit against the ends of the flattened bottom of the rib 29. The spray material tip 9` is threaded to the forward end of the insert 6 and has a rearward skirt 30 fitting over the rib 29.
- A gasket 3| aroundthe rib 29 between the skirt and the ring 25 not only seals the adjoining surfaces of these elements, but also is the medium .by which the skirt holds the ring against the forward-face of the body.
On its rearward side the ring 25 has a generally cylindrical collar 32. Thishas' an outwardly offset rounded bulge 33 on one side and a similar inwardly directed `indentation 34 from the opposite side. The endsof the air passages 23 and 24 in the forwardwface of the body terminate respectively within the bulge and the indentation. The air from the passage 23 is thereby directed within the collar 32 and the air from passage 24 is directed to the outside of the collar. The air within the collar travels forwardly through the spaces between the attened top and the bottom of the rib 29 and the adjoining cylindrical surfaces of the divider ring 25, gasket 3l and the skirt 30 of the spray material tip 9. From the chamber 35 ahead of the rib this air continues forwardly through an annular series of ports 35 in the tip and is discharged around the outlet of the tip through the central port 3l of the air 3 cap 38. The air on the outer side of the collar 32 flows forwardly through the slight opening between the outer rim of the divider ring 25 and the inner surface of the air cap retaining sleeve 39. This air then travels forwardly between the tip 9 and the air cap 38. The former is hexagon in cross section with rounded corners, between the hexagonal flat surfaces, which it the inner cylindrical. surface of the cap. This air then hows through ports 40 in the cap and is directed exteriorly against the atomized spray material to ilatten it into fan shape. As it is frequently desired to vary the width of the fan shapeddischarge, a conventional air volume control valve 49 is positioned in intercepting reiationwi-th the rearward portion of air passage 24. The greater fan width desired, the more this valve is opened.

When it is desired to replace the packing, the needle valve i0, needle spring I6 and adjustable screw I1 are `lrstrremoved `from Vthe rear end of the gun. The vtrigger I4 is released lby removing stud.|5 vand plug I9 lifted out. The nut 44 is then turned. forwardly upon the stem 43 and the latter is moved rearwardlyuntil it -is vfree of the nut andmay itself be removedfromthe gun. The old packing may then be reached by ya pointed tool and-anew packing inserted. While this is more troublesome than replacing packing in some more conventional arrangements, replacement is neededonly rarely, and this disadvantageis well compensated by the compactness .of the subject design and the improved appearance it provides.
While I haveshow-n and described a specific Vembodiment of my invention, it willv be understood that various modications maybe made without departing from the spirit thereof as set forthV in the appended claims.
Having. thus described my invention, what I of the air dividing ring, with a central air discharge port and laterally positioned air discharge ports, and means'directing air from the center of the rringtothecentral port and air from the outside of the ring to the laterally positioned ports.

In a spray gun of the type described, a spray gun body with a nat annular surface at itsk forward end Vanditwo separate air passages having their outlets onopposite sidesvofV the annularfsurface at equal radial distances from the. longitudinal axis of Vthe spray-gunbody,` an air` dividing ring havingV a rearwardly extending-generally cylindrical collar fitting. against theat annular face of the body, the inner diameter of the `co1- lar being substantially equal to the distance between the outlets of the two air passages, an outwardly extending oifset portion on one side of the collar overlying'the outlet of one of said passages, an inwardly extending indentation on the opposite side of the! collar overlying the outlet opening ofy the other -air passage, whereby air from the rstfmentione'd passage is directed within the collar andair from the. second mentioned passage is directedy to lthe outsidehofv the collar, and spray discharge nozzle `means mounted on vthe forward end'of the spray gun body in abutting relation to the forward end of thev air dividing ring and having,` separate passages for the air from the interior andfthe air from-the exterior of the ring and having separate discharge ports for the two streams of' air.
