. 1 r This invention relates to improvements in machines for cutting through multiple layers of cloth and other sheet material; and the invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel ,severed material supporting attachment for such machines. 1
The invention has for an object to provide means for attachment to a cloth or like cutting machine adapted to furnish an anti-friction sup- .port operative to lift, somewhat spread apart, I and carry the severed marginal portions of the material behind the cutting tool, whereby to reduce resistance to advancing movement of the machine, and thus ease the labor of manipulating and guiding the latter, especially when operating upon material of but limited flexibility.
The invention has for a further object to provide a material supporting means adapted to be attached to a cloth cutting or like machine above the traction base and behind the reciprocated cutting knife and standard of the machine, whereby to receive the divided marginal portions of: the material as severed by the knife, so as to both spread the same relative to the standard and lift the same clear of the traction base and onto supporting anti-friction rollers, thereby relieving the traction base and standard from the frictional drag of the material.
Other objects of this invention, not at this timeamore particularly enumerated, will be understood from the following detailed description of the same.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of a cloth or like cutting machine equipped with the antifriction material supporting attachment of this invention; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character l indicates the traction base of a cutting machine, the same being provided in its underside with the usual rollers (not shown) to facilitate its movement over a supporting surface, such as a table top T, and beneath a lay of cloth or other sheet material M, when cutting the latter. Upstanding from said traction base is a standard H, by which the machine casing I2 is supported, said casing including an electric motor l3 as the power supplying means of the machine. The attachment, according to and for the above stated purposesof this invention, comprises a bracket member having an anchoring portion 20 adapted to be suitably secured to the rearward side of the machine casing 12. At its forward end, said carrier arm 23 is provided with a plow member 24, which is disposed close to' the top surface of the traction base 10, with its point or forward end 25 at least. closely adjacent to and preferably abutting the rear edge Said plow member is formed to provide upwardly inclined divergent shares 26 and 2'1, respectively projecting symmetrically from opposite sides thereof so as to rise from the plane of its point or forward end 25. In the operation of the cutting machine, when equipped with the novel attachment of this invention, the operator, after having laid. out upon the table {11a lay of material M desired to be cut, slides the machine forward over the table T, so that the forward end of the traction base I passes beneath the lay of material M. As the machine is advanced, the material M passesbeneath the presser foot l8, and is thereupon operatively engaged by the reciprocated cutting knife [4.
As the material M is divided by the cutting knife l4, the severed margins of said material will straddle the standard I I, and, as the machine progresses, the divided marginal portions of the material will be engaged by the plow member 24 so as to be upwardlydeflected by the shares 26 and 21b: the latter,and thereby respectively led onto the anti-friction carrier rolls 29 and 30. Said carrier rolls will support the material, and
will be freely rotated by the movement of In this manner, thethe material thereover. divided marginal portions of the material M will be somewhat spread apart immediately behind the cutting knife 14, so that the cut edges of the material tend to sheer away from the sides of the standard H, thereby substantially diminishing frictional resistance to movement of thelatter therebetween. In addition to this, the plow member 24 will cause the material to sheer away from the top surface of the traction base behind the standard, and will lead thematerial onto said carrier rolls, thus removing the drag of the divided marginal portions of the material upon the traction base, while at the same time said carrier rolls will roll on the lifted material so as to advance therealong with substantially no frictional resistance. These effects are of especial advantage when the material operated upon is somewhat stiff or of but limited flexibility; It'will therefore be obvious, that by thus relieving the machine from material drag and consequent frictional resistance to its operative advancing movement along the lay of material, the propulsion, control and guidance of the machine in use is greatly facilitated, and the strength and labor of the operator substantially conserved.
Having now described my invention, I claim:
1. In a cloth or like cutting machine having a traction base, a power driven reciprocable cutting knife and a channeled standard rising from said base by which said knife is guided, an upwardly and rearwardly inclined inverted V-shaped plow member mounted with its point overlying said base behind said standard and with its apex aligned in the, plane ofsaid knife, whereby to prc'ivide downwardly sli 'ai ef'lpoitions laterally divergent from said a es, and a pair of oppositely and laterally projecting outwardly tapered rotatable rolls mounted behind said plow member with the upper sides of their peripheries somewhat intersecting the planes of the share portions of said plow member, all whereby said plow member lifts and spreads apart the divided marginal portions of knife severed material and leads thesame to the support of said rolls.
2. In a cloth or like cutting machine having a traction base, a standard, a motor and transmisknife, whereby to provide downwardly inclined share portions laterally divergent from said apex, and a pair of oppositely and laterally projecting outwardly tapered rotatable rolls mounted on said carrier arm immediately behind said plow member with the upper sides of their peripheries somewhat intersecting. the planes of the share portions of said plow member, all whereby said plow member lifts and spreads apart the divided marginal portions of knife severed material and leads the same to the support of said rolls.
