This invention relates to a novel means for channeling shoe soles and more particularly to means for channeling and forming com- V bination inner and middle soles utilized in the "5180 called double welt process of making shoes and is a division of my co-pending case filed January 25, 1927, Serial No. 163,492which has matured into Patent No. 1,7 55,843 granted April 22, 1930. p 1 The primary object of the present invention is the provision of novel means for forming a. combination inner and middle sole by beveh'ng the edgelof that portion of the leather which forms the inner sole so as to ali5 low the upper to be pulled under farther from the edge and thus save material on that portion of the leather forming the middle sole, and to save in the width and length of the outer sole.
Another object ofthe invention isthe provision of novel means associated with the usual type of sole channeling means, such as shown in the Letters Patent 1,030,705 issued to F. E. Bertrand on June 25, 1912 for chan- 2'5 neling leather to form a combination inner and outer sole having the edge thereof beveled whereby such portion of the leather will be extremely thin. d

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate coriii) responding parts throughout the several views, the letter-A generally indicatesa sole channeling machine and "B the sole which detail, but it isto be noted that the same includesintegrali inner andumiddle soles 10 and 11 and that the outer or middle sole 10 is extended beyond the marginal edge of the inner sole as'at12. The machine and the method'of channeling soles provides a .novel channel 13 for receiving the upper and liningand also provides a bevel on the upper face of the extension or flap onthe'middle sole as indicated by the reference character 14. It is to be also noted that the peripheral edge of the inner sole 11 is also beveled as at 15 and that this bevel extends inwardly toward the channel 13. f
As stated the machine A is of the general type shown in Letters Patent 1,030,705 and also in the Letters Patent of Great Britain toAlbert Gabel 3,986 February 17,1910, and
of which the same is attached to the vertical movable support or post 20. 1 It has its upper face at the edge thereof beveled inwardly as at 23. Thus the upperfac'e of this disk is 'of-a substantially concavedshape. This disk supports the "Work and is raised and lowered I .by suitable mechanism for bringing the work into and out of operative position relative to the channeling mechanism. 1 a
.Arranged at one edge of the disk 21 is the oscillating arm 24, which carries a knife block 25 for the reception of the channel knife 26. This knife also forms a salient feature of the invention and forms the subject matter 7 per se of another independent application for patent Serial 'No'. 163,491, filed J anuary 25, 1927 which has matured into Patent No. 1,752,113 granted March 25,1930. This knife extends invvardly toward the disk and overlies the beveled edge 23 thereof and isdisposed at one side of the diametric center of the disk. j I This knife 26 includes a shank '26 which is detachably fitted within the knife block 25 and a forwardly extending blade 27 which is beveled toward the inner longitudinal edge thereof-to provide a' cutting edge 28 The outer end of the blade 27-is likewise. provided with a cutting edge 29 and this por- 7 tion of the'blade is beveled toward'the' back face or edge of the knife as at 30so as to slightly spread the inner and outer soles 10 and 11' duringthe cutting stroke of the knife. Spaced from the cutting edge 29 of theknife=26 is an upwardly and inwardly inclined' auxiliary cutting blade 31. This blade 3 has one end thereof facing'the cutting edge 28 provided with a cuttingedge, which is aris held in an inclined position the knife cuts the extension 12 at an angle and bevels the ranged at an angle of substantially fortyfive degrees to the edge 28. The auxiliary blade 31 narrows toward its cutting edge and the angle decreases toward the edge 28.

This presser foot fun'cti'onsto hold the sole down against the bevel of the disk during the ;operating stroke of the knife which-insures the proper cutting by the knife of the sole and the forming of the bevel 14 on the middle sole 10. When the knife swings away from the sole the presser foot is raised so that the work can slide over the disk 21.
The operation of my improved means for forming the combination inner and middle sole with the" beveled edge on the inner'sole consists in placing the leather upon the table "or disk with its edge on the bevel 23*of the disk andthe raising of the disk to its operative posltion, after which the channeling machine is then set in operation.
The knife then swings toward the diskand the presser foot 33 is forced downward and holds the upper face thereof and thus theedge ofthe [middle sole is gradually tapered forming a thin flexible extension. From the foregoing description, it can be seen that I have provided novelmeans for forming a channel incombined inner and middle soles with the extension of the middle sole beveled outwardly to form a thin flexible portion. v
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention, but:
What I claim as new is:
1. An apparatus for channeling combination inner and middle soles comprising a work disk having its upper face provided at the margin thereof with an inwardly beveled surface, a presser foot for holding the sole stock against the bevel face, and a reciprocatory knife arranged at one side of the diametric center of the disc and substantially parallel therewith movable toward said foot.
2. In a device for forming combination inner and middle soles and for channeling the same, a work supporting disk having its upper face at the margin provided with an inwardly beveled surface against which the stock is adapted to rest, and a presser foot having a heel portion beveled to conform to the beveled surface of the disk for holding the stock against the same, and a knife movable in a substantially horizontal plane toward the presser foot.
3. In a device for forming inner and mid dle soles and for channeling the same, a work supporting disk having its upper face at the margin provided with an inwardly and downwardly beveled surface, against which the stock is adapted to rest, a vertically movable presser foot having a heel portion beveled to correspond to the bevel of the disk, a knife movable in a horizontal plane toward and away from the presser foot, and a feeder for advancing the stock over the disk during the inoperative stroke of the knife.
4. In a machine for forming combination inner and middle soles and for channeling the same, the combination with a sole channeling means, a work disk having its upper face provided at its margin with an inwardly and downwardly directed bevel, of a presser foot movable toward and away from the disk having a heel portion beveled to correspond to the beveled surface of the disk.
