CLOTHES LINE PROP Fiied Jan. 26, 1946- Patented Feb. 8, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLOTI-IESLINE PROP I William L. Baumeier, Eggertsvilie, N. Y.
Application January 2-6, 1946, Serial No. 643,674
(Cl. 24s-e5s) 3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clothes line'poles or props.
It has for one of its objects to provide a prop of this character which is so designed and constructed as to positively and effectually prevent its being uncoupled from the clothes line as well as slipping relatively to or on the line, thereby affording maximum safety in supporting the line.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clothes prop which may be readily coupled to and uncoupled from the line, and which is simple and inexpensive in construction.
Other features of the invention reside in the construction and arrangement of. parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved clothes prop, Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section thereof taken in the plane of line, 22, Figure 1.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts'throughout the several views.
Referring now to the drawings showing the preferred embodiment of my invention, l indi cates the clothes pole or prop which may be made from wood or other appropriate material, and H indicates, generally, the line-engaging holder which may be permanently attached to the prop to be sold therewith or which maybe separate therefrom and readily attached by the user to aprop.
This holder is composed of two metallic bars l2, I2 of steel or like material and both are of the same shape and contour, as shown, and may be stamped or otherwise formed. The lower or relatively diverging ends 13 of these bars constitute the attaching portions thereof and have alining openings 14 therein for receiving bolts or rivets 15 for securing theholder to the tapered upper end of the pole. At their converging upper ends these bars are secured by riveting or the like to a tie or spacer block Iii to thereby provide a unitary assembly and the extended upper or line-engaging portions 11 are disposed in substantially parallel relation to provide yieldable gripping jaws to snugly receive, in response to a thrust action, the clothes line in a firm or clamped-like fashion. To facilitate the application of the holder to the line, the free or terminal ends of the bars 12 are preferably bent outwardly, as indicated at IT, and thus provide 1 a flared mouth for guiding the holder over the clothes line. When the upper end of the prop is thrust into engagement with the clothes line, the jaws l1 contract about the same and hold the parts in coupled, non-slipping relation. Disengagement of the prop from the line is effected,
by a smart pull of theformer from the latter,
2 This improved holder or clothes line prop attachment is so designed that it not only provides a comparatively deep throat into which the line is thrust and retained against accidental uncoupling, but the yieldable jaws l6 firmly and effectually grip the line to prevent slippage of the pole lengthwise of the line, thereby providing a prop which will not become accidently disengaged from the line when in use and which will af ford maximum safety for the line and the wash ing borne by it,
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a clothes line prop, and an attachment mounted on the end thereof and including a pair of bars disposed in opposing spaced relation and joined together intermediate their ends to a spacer block, the lower portions of said bars constituting prop-attaching, members and the upper portions of said bars being in substantially contracted, spaced parallel relation to provide a deep throat and constituting gripping jaws for contracting engagement in clamped-like fashion about the line.
2. An attachment for clothes props, comprising a holder composed of two spaced bars secured together intermediate their upper and lower ends to provide lower prop-attaching portions and upper line-engaging portions, the latter being in parallel spaced relation and relatively yield- WILLIAM L. BAUMEIER.
