This accurate positioning is important in operation, and also lt is necessary that the siphon construction be rugged and strong enough to overcome the tendency to break or shift out of accurate position, as has been prevalent among prior mechanisms used for this purpose, on account of the vibrations which occur in machinery oi this character.
The present invention aims primarily to provide a siphon mechanism which will satisfy the above requirements of use, i.- e., it may be accurately adjusted and held in proper operating position; and will be sufficiently strong and rugged .to stay in proper operating condition without frefquent attention or repairs, under the operating conditions usually encountered. In accordance with the present invention, the siphon mechanism proper extends only part way through the.
roll land is provided at its inner end with a bearing support. the bearing structure being held in l position by retractable arms which engage the inner wall of the midsection of the roll, and which may beinserted in retracted position through the central hole in one end of the rol1into engagement with the inner end portion of the siphon mechanism proper, the arms of the bearing structure being then moved outwardly to their wall engaging position so as to hold the inner end of the siphon mechanism securely against vibration or shift in position.
Furtherl objects 'and advantages ofthe invention will be in part obvious and in part specifically referred to in the description hereinafter contained which, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred i'orm of siphon apparatus constructed to operate in accordance with the invention; the disclosure, however, should be considered as merely illustrative of the principles of the invention in its broader aspects. In the drawings:

Referring first to Fig. 1, the invention is disclosed as applied to a steam heated roll I having supporting and bearing hubs 2 and 3 at its opposite ends, the hub 2 being provided with a central hole ,4 lthrough which the siphon mechanism may be inserted. and in the illustrated form of the invention, the bearing structure for the inner end of the siphon mechanism is inserted through a similar hole 5 in hub 34.
. The illustrated form of siphon mechanism is similar to that disclosed in my prior co-pending application Ser. No. 588,319 filed April 14, 1945, entitled Siphon mechanism for heated rolls" (now U. S. Patent No. 2,408,606 issued October 1, 1946) to which reference is made for a fuller disclosure of the details thereof. In brief, the illustrated form of siphon mechanism is provided with an appropriate rotary steam joint 6, as known in the art, and having a steam admission pipe 1 lthrough which steam is admitted to the interior haust pipe 8.
At its inner end portion, the exhaust conduit member 9 is provided with a port I2 which leads to the inner end of a hollow siphon member I3, pivoted about the pin I4 which extends between ears I5 on the exhaust conduit member 9. In its operating position shown in Fig, 1, the outer end of the siphon member I3 is positioned close l :to the bottom of the inner cylindrical wall I6 of the roll I so as to withdraw the condensate. A slidable-bar I1 releasably locks the siphon member I3. in this position, and when it is desired to withdraw the siphon mechanism. the end can I8 is loosened and moved somewhat to the left from the position shown in Fig. 1, to expose the outer end of bar I1. Bar I1 is then slid to the lett to release the inner end of siphon member I3, and
` the siphon mechanism is then turned 180 until to hold the inner portion of the Siphon mechanism accurately and securely in proper operating position. In the illustrated form of the invention, this bearing structure includes an elongated supporting member 'I 9 which is positioned axially of roll I and is withdrawable through the hole 5 in hub 3 of the roll, the inner end portion 20 of supporting member I 9 having rotary bearing engagement within a bushing 2I which is mounted in the inner end portion 22 of exhaust conduit member 9. In operation the siphon mechanism is stationary, and the supporting member I9 rotates Vith the roll.
'Io hold the supporting member I9 in position, I provide a retractable mechanism which may be adjusted between an expanded portion wherein it engages the inner cylindrical wall I6 of roll I,
and an inner retracted position wherein it lies closely adjacent to the supporting member I9 and thus frees the latter from the roll so as to enable the supporting and bearing assembly to be withdrawn endwise through hole 5. In the form shown, the supporting member I9 has fastened to it a collar 23, this collar having pivoted thereto a set of links 24. A similar collar 25 is fastened to the inner end of a sleeve 26 vwhich is slidable along the supporting member I9, this collar 25 carrying a similar set of links 21 which are pivotally connected thereto and also to the links 24. Thus inthe position shown in Fig. 1, the links 24 and 21 extend out radially to bear at their outer ends against the inner wall I6 of roll I. This positions the bearing portion 20 of supporting member I9v accurately at the center of the roll, and in turn positions, the siphon mechanism accurately in operative position, and holds the latter securely against vibration or sagging. If the sleeve 26 be shifted to the right from the position shown in Fig. 1, the links or arms 24 and 21 will assume a position parallel and closely adjacent to the supporting member I9, thus permitting the bearing structure to be withdrawn from or inserted into the interior of roll I.
In the illustrated form of the invention the outer end of the supporting member I9 is secured by a cross-pin 2B to a central hub 29 extending inwardly from an end cap 30 which is fastened in position by bolts 3 I A spacer collar 32 is interposed between the outer end of sleeve 28 and hub 29, this collar 32 being cut to the length required to hold the links 24 and 21 in the operating position shown in Fig. 1. While the invention has been disclosed as embodied in the above described specific form of siphon apparatus, it should be understood that changes may be made therein without departing from the invention in its broader aspects, within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. Siphon apparatus for heated rolls, including an exhaust conduit member positioned centrally within the roll and extending out through one end of the roll, said conduit member having a bearing portion located in the midsection of the roll, said midsection having an internal bore of enlarged size as compared to the bore of the end sections of the roll, a supporting structure located in said midsection and having rotary bearing means engaging said bearing portion, said supporting structure also having outwardly extendingarms engageable with the inner wall of the roll to hold the supporting structure in position, means being provided to aiord movement of said arms from their aforesaid wall engaging positions into positions near the axial zone of the roll.
2. Siphon apparatus for heated rolls, including an exhaust conduit member positioned centrally within the roll and vextending out through one endof the roll, said-conduit member having a bearing portion located in the midsection of the roll, said midsection having an internal bore of enlarged size as compared to the bore of the end sections of the roll, a supporting structure located lin said midsection and having rotary bearing means engaging said bearing portion, said supporting structure also having outwardly extending arms engageable with the inner wall of the roll to hold the supporting structure in position,
said supporting structure also including means operable from an end of the roll for moving said arms from their aforesaid wall engaging positions into positions near the axial zone of the roll.
3. Siphon apparatus for heated rolls, including siphon mechanism withdrawable through one end portion of the roll, said siphon mechanism having a bearing portion located in the mid-section of the roll, a supporting structure for the inner portion of said siphon mechanism, said supporting structure including an elongated supporting member located centrally within the roll and extending to the opposite end of the roll, the inner end portion of said supporting member having rotary bearing engagement with the aforesaid bearing portion of said siphon mechanism, said supporting structure also having outwardly extending arms engage'able'with the midsection of the inner wall of the roll to hold the supporting structure in position, and means operable from said opposite'end of the roll for retracting said arms to positions near the axial zone of the roll. 4. Siphon apparatus for heated rolls, including siphon mechanism withdrawable through one end portion of the roll. said Siphon mechanism having a bearing portion located in the midsectionl supporting structure also including sets of pivotally mounted arms engageable with the midsection of the inner wall o! .the roll to hold the supporting structure in position, and means operable from the opposite end of the roll for retract- I ing said arms to positions in the axial zone of the roll, said last mentioned means including anadjusting member vmovable longitudinally of the roll, said adjusting member being connected to said arms and extending to said opposite end portion of the roll. v
