Description

vzw' #4% G. C. WILLIAMS LEG WARMER BAG Filed Oct. 28, 1946 INVENTOR md" ATTORNEYS Jan. 18, 1949.
Patented Jan. 18, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE,
LEG WARMER BAG vGertrude C. Williams, Cleveland, Ohio Aillllicn' @dimmi-28, 1946, S'Ia/l N0. r706,179
6 Claims. v1 My present invention comprises a novel 4form of waterproof leg warming 'garment particularly adapted for use by persons sitting outdoors in cold Weather, las for instance at football games, by riders of vehicles exposed to the cold when operating the vehicle, and for any similar uses. One vof the objects of my invention has been to produce a garment or covering of the type referred to which is preformed to iit the leg portions of a person when in sitting position, as distinguished -from coverings for the same purpose in the -p'rior art Which are largely in the forms of bags that become wrinkled 'beneath the knee portions of the legs when the person Wearing the covering sits down.
Still another object of my invention has been tcl-produce a garment or leg covering of the class mentioned which comprises an outer layer of cover material of rubber or rubberized fabric, suitably combined with a layer or layers of Warm fabric 'such as wool or blanket material, so that my article is impervious to water and therefore can be used out vin the rain,
Still another object of my invention has been to provide novel fastening means for closing the leg Warming 'sections of the garment or covering article "after the same has been stepped into 'or pulled Aover the legs of the user or wearer, in conjunction with special fastening means for preventing displacement o'rslidin'gdown ofthe thigh section of the covering from the thigh portions of the body, the last mentioned means being in the nature of a fastening belt part.
Still another feature of my construction of leg covering or garment lies -in the provision of a foot I rest member made of Wood or similar 'insulative material of any suitable nature, the same being combined with the lower most or foot portion of the 'tibial section of my 'covering by fastening means 'connecting the same to a base rubber lpad vulcanized to the rubber covering portion of the covering garment, the mode of connection reinforcing the lower or closed 'end or 'foot lsection of the 'garment 1in `a Tmianner that will b'e more -flly understood upon reference to the following detailed description of my invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part if ,this specification,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of -a leg covering 'or lgarment embodying the construction of iny invention.
Figure '2 is a 'front `:elevation yof the garment as when in 'use 'upon the liaison, 4Adotted lines illustrating Athe upper pdrtion o'f the body of the per'- :Sn about whose Vlegs Vthe garment -is' y'iitted y ing means designated 4.
Figure 3 is a side elevation showing the garment as exhibited and applied to the person in Figure 2, the View bringing out clearly the manner in which the holding belt part is tted around the back of the person Wearing or using the garment or leg covering.
Describing my invention in detail and referring particularly to Figure l of the drawings it will be noted that the leg covering or garment of my invention comprises primarily an approximately vertical leg section A to which I shall refer hereafter as the tibial section, and the approximately horizontal section B which is the thigh or femur section of the garment. These sections A and B are formed integrally with one another and are pre-shaped in order to maintain the relation of approximate verticality of the section A in relation to the section B. The covering article of my invention is made up of an outer layer of material designated I which will preferably be made of rubber or rubberized water impervious material within which isprovided the inner warming layer of material designated 2 which may be of wool or any known layer substance having warming characteristics or such as will assist in insulating the legs disposed in the garment from the outer atmosphere acting in conjunction with the outer covering layer of rubber or rubberized material designated l.
The lower end of the tibial section A of my garment is closed and the upper end communicates of course with the thigh section B by way of a 'substantially continuous passage and the thigh section B is open rearwardly as indicated at 3 to permit entry of the legs of the wearer into the covering article in an obvious manner.
For facilitating the entry of the legs of a person into the garment at at least one side of the garment, the latter is slit along the tibial section A vertically and along the thigh section B approximately horizontally and the slit portions are adapted to be separated or untied by means o'f a 'common type of zipper or equivalent fasten- At its lower portion and internally thereof the tibi'al section A of my garment is provided with a foot rest block made of wood or equivalent insulating material and this member 5 engages over the lower closed end portion of the rubber covering material 'l fa't the bottom.
'On the under side of the bottom portion 6 of the rubber covering l is disposed a rubber sec tion or block 7 of a thickness of -approximateiy l inch 'inthe actual articlemade according to my invention. This rubber section is vulcanized to the rubber covering l adjacent thereto and the block 5 which is provided with an upwardly and forwardly inclined surface is attached to the lower end of the -covering l and the member l by suitable fastening such as staples 8 driven into the block 5 from the bottom and effectively connecting the parts 5, E, and 'l as well as providing a uniting of these parts to reinforce the covering l and the inner warming material section 2 in an effective manner.
lThe block 5 provides a very easy rest for the feet of the user of the garment or covering of my invention, prevents possibility of kicking through the bottom portion of the tibial section A of my article when introducing the feet and legs yinto the covering and also assists inmaintaining the feet warm as the covering garment is being used.
As a means for preventing slipping forwardly and downwardly of thethigh section B of the covering, l may employ preferably a belt memlber 9 attached at one end to the right side por tion'of the section B at the open end of the latter adapted to pass around the back portion of the wearer, and `to be buckled at its free end to the left lower side portion B below the zipper or equivalent fastening t. `By tightening the belt member 9 the upper or thigh section B of the covering can. be pulled more easily over the thigh portions of the wearer, in an obvious manner.
It will be clear from Figures 2 and 3 that if desired the user or wearer of my covering garment may readily house his hands in the thigh section as wellas the leg portions of his body and in introducing his hands into the covering the thigh section B need not be displaced if it is properly attached by the belt to the body of the wearer. rlhe manner of use of my invention being readily made clear upon reference to my drawings and foregoing description, it suffices to state that my leg covering may be very quickly applied to the legs when the zipper or fastening 4 is released by moving the slider thereof to the lower end of the run of the slit portion ofthe garment. With the legs inserted so that the feet of the user rest upon the block 5, the
' garment will adapt itself to the disposition of the legs when the person is sitting, may be quickly fastened by means of the fastening Ai around the legs and then by tightening up the belt 9 at the buckle side of the garment the latter is ready for use.
Leg coverings of my construction as above set forth may be advantageously used by persons on voyages for keeping the legs warm while sitting out on deck when the whether is cold; in fact there are many uses for an article of the class set forth to which I have not referred herein. f
The portions l and 2 of the garment maybe united by adhesion orany suitable method of uniting similar layers of material known to the art.
It should be noted that the garment of .my invention is additionally characterized-by the fact that the legs and thighs of the wearer t snugly from the bottom to the top, For this purpose the garment of my invention tapers gradually from a narrower diameter at the bottom to a, wider dia-meter at the top in conformance respectively with the narrower diameter required to fit around the legs of the wearer and the wider diameter o' the garment required to fit snugly around the thighs of the wearer. Y Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States is: n
