Abstract

This invention relates to a pair of protective crawling chaps for a crawling infant or an infant beginning to walk. The chaps are worn directly over an infant's legs or over clothing and provide protection from abrasions, dirt and wear and tear when crawling on various surfaces. They also make the infant more comfortable and cooler when crawling in hot weather because they are open in the back. The chaps cover the front of the infant from the waist to the ankle and are attached with adjustable waist, knee and ankle straps. The main body of the chaps is created with an opening at the groin area for the right and left leg portions to extend to the ankles. This groin opening is in a specific proportion to the main body of the chaps to prevent the leg portions from slipping while the infant is crawling.

  • Known prior applications include protective chaps and infant crawling pants as referenced in U.S. Pat. Nos. 6,338,164; 5,095,544; 6,343,383; 4,845,778.

    • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • Known prior applications include protective chaps and infant crawling pants as referenced in U.S. Pat. Nos. 6,338,164; 5,095,544; 6,343,383; 4,845,778. These applications are similar and provide protection for their specific purpose. However, these applications would not be suitable for the purposes of the present invention.
  • Referring specifically to the protective chaps applications, U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,095,544; 6,338,164, it is not evident if these applications contain an opening in the groin area that is a specific proportion to the main body of the chaps which will prevent the leg portions from slipping while an infant is crawling. The present invention is made with the specific proportion such that the leg portions will not slip while the infant is crawling.
  • Referring specifically to the infant crawling pants, U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,845,778; 6,343,383, these applications will not keep an infant cooler and more comfortable when crawling in hot weather. These applications do not claim to protect an infant's clothing as does the present invention.
  • The present invention relates to a pair of protective crawling chaps for a crawling infant or an infant beginning to walk. The chaps are worn directly over an infant's legs or over clothing. The chaps cover the front of the infant from the waist to the ankle and are attached with adjustable waist, knee and ankle straps. The purpose of the chaps is to provide protection to the baby's legs from scrapes, cuts, bruises and dirt when crawling on various surfaces, such as hardwood floors, carpet, tile, concrete, grass, etc. The chaps are also worn over clothing (i.e., pants, dresses) and will provide protection to the clothing from wear and tear and dirt when crawling on various surfaces.
    • BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • It is an object of the invention to produce a pair of protective crawling chaps that protects an infant's legs, specifically the knees while the infant is crawling and just beginning to walk.
  • It is another object of the invention to produce a pair of protective crawling chaps that protects an infant's clothing while the infant is crawling.
  • It is another object of the invention to produce a pair of protective crawling chaps that makes the infant more comfortable while it is crawling. The infant's knees will be more comfortable because of the double-thickness and batting material of the chaps. When the chaps are worn during hot weather, the infant will be cooler than if crawling in pants.
  • It is another object of the invention to produce a pair of protective crawling chaps that protects the infant's knees when it begins walking. Infants take many tumbles when learning to walk. The chaps will prevent the cuts and scrapes on knees and legs that most infants get when learning to walk.
  • It is another object of the invention to produce a pair of protective crawling chaps that have an opening at the groin area that is a specific proportion to the rest of the main body of the chaps. This specific proportion is necessary in preventing the leg portions from slipping while the infant is crawling.
  • The invention is a pair of protective crawling chaps that are open in the back and attached by straps at the waist, above the knee and at the ankle. The chaps provide protection to the baby's legs from scrapes, cuts, bruises and dirt when crawling on various surfaces, such as hardwood floors, carpet, tile, concrete, grass, etc. The chaps are made of a durable material, such as denim. They are sewn together with a batting material in the middle, which provides extra cushion. The waist straps are attached to each other with Velcro. The knee and ankle straps are attached to the main body of the chaps with Velcro.
  • To the accomplishment of the above and related objects the invention may be embodied in the form illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Attention is called to the fact, however, that the drawings are illustrative only. Variations are contemplated as being part of the invention, limited only by the scope of the claims.
    • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE SEVERAL VIEWS OF THE DRAWING
  • FIG. 1 is a back view of the chaps. This is the side of the chaps that touches the infant or infant's clothing.
  • FIG. 2 is a front view of the chaps. This is the side of the chaps that is against the floor when the infant crawls.
  • FIG. 3 is a back view of the left leg of the chaps. This view shows more detail of the knee and ankle straps and how they attach with Velcro.
  • FIG. 4 is a front view of the left leg of the chaps. This view shows more detail of the knee and ankle straps and how they attach with Velcro.
    •  DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • Referring to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, these drawings illustrate the front and back sides of the protective crawling chaps (1). The main body of the chaps (2) consists of two separate panels cut to form a specific pattern that covers the waist and legs of the infant. These panels of the chaps (2) are constructed from denim or other durable material. The two panels are sewn together with a third layer of padding or batting material between them. The main body of the chaps (2) extends from the waist with an opening at the groin area (8) to form the leg portions that extend to each ankle of the infant.
  • The opening at the groin area (8) separates the right and left leg portions of the main body of the chaps (2). This groin opening (8) is a specific proportion to the main body of the chaps. This specific proportion prevents the leg portions from slipping while the infant is crawling.
  • The waist straps (3), knee straps (4) and ankle straps (5) are also made from denim or other durable material. The straps are sewn within the seams of the main body of the chaps (2). The waist straps (3) are two separate pieces attached on each side of the main body of the chaps (2). The waist straps (3) attach to each other with Velcro. The rough side of the Velcro (7) is sewn horizontally at the end of the right waist strap. The soft side of the Velcro (6) is sewn horizontally at the end of the left waist strap.
  • The main body of the chaps (2) is placed against the infant and attached at the waist by wrapping the right and left straps (3) around the back of the infant and attaching the Velcro strips together.
  • Referring to FIG. 3 and FIG. 4, these drawings illustrate the front and back views of the left leg portion. All descriptions related to the left leg are applicable to right leg. The left leg knee strap (4) is sewn into the inside seam of the left leg portion of the main body of the chaps. The rough side of the Velcro (7) is sewn horizontally onto the front side of the knee strap. The soft side of the Velcro (6) is sewn horizontally onto the underneath side of the main body of the chaps. The knee leg strap (4) is wrapped around the infant's leg and fastened to the main body by the Velcro fastener.
  • Still referring to FIG. 3 and FIG. 4, the left leg ankle strap (5) is sewn into the inside seam of the left leg portion of the main body of the chaps. The rough side of the Velcro (7) is sewn horizontally onto the front side of the ankle strap. The soft side of the Velcro (6) is sewn horizontally onto the underneath side of the main body of the chaps. The ankle leg strap (5) is wrapped around the infant's leg and fastened to the main body by the Velcro fastener.

Claims (3)

1) A pair of protective chaps for use by a crawling infant or infant just beginning to walk comprising a main body with a right and left leg portion extending from the waist to the ankle.
2) The chaps set forth in claim 1 are prepared with an opening at the groin area that separates the two leg portions. This groin opening is in a specific proportion to the main body of the chaps to prevent the leg portions from slipping to the outside or inside while the infant is crawling.
3) The chaps set forth in claim 1 are adjustably fastened to the front of the infant at the waist, knee and ankle with straps wrapped around the waist, knee and ankle and attached to the main body by Velcro fasteners.
