UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELECTRl i litihNG KIT Application February 28, 1946, Serial'No. 650,765
This invention relates to electric shaving kits and particularly to shaving kits of this kind adapted for travelers lodging in hotel rooms, where frequently there is no mirror sufliciently near a suitable electric outlet or suitable light may be wanting.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a compact shaving kit or case in which mirror, light, and electric shaver may be conveniently carried.
Another object of this invention is to provide a kit of this kind which is light and which has suitable compartments for shaver and electric light, amirror being mounted in the closure or lid which may be supported in a convenient'position by a special hinge construction, whereby the closure is connected with the main or body part of the kit.
Another object of the invention is to provide a kit of this kind having a compartment for remeans enclosed in a translucent housing so that light may be transmitted therefrom upwardly and forwardly and to the shaver compartment.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a shaving kit having a compartment for an electric shaver, a compartment for an electric lamp, detachably mounted therein and enclosed in a translucent housing.
These and other desirable objects are accomplished bythe construction disclosed as an illustrative embodimentof the invention in the .following description and in the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of an open electric shaving kit illustrating one possible embodiment of the invention; v
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the body part'of the kit, the cover being removed;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the kit, the front wall being sectioned away to expose the interior;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation ofthe kit, the end wall being sectioned away to expose the interior;
Fig.5 is a fragmentary section illustrating parts in another position; and
Fig. 6 is a diagram of the electric wiring.
. The same reference numerals throughout the readily understood from the drawings, the "body I 'and' -the cover 9 are each preferably formedof 11 Claims. (01. '240--'2) molded plastic material. The body has a compartment I I which may receive an electric shaver l3 and its usual extension cord 15. The electric shaver may be of any usual or preferred form and since it forms no part of the present invention, is not described in detail. A second compartment [1 is provided in the body, preferably adjacent its front wall, and. may be enclosed in a housing I9 of substantially translucent material, such as frosted glass, roughened or pigmented plastic, or "the like, but which is preferably not strictly transparent so that the brightness of the filament of an electric bulb in the housing'will not cause glare in the eyes of the user. The housing l9 forms the inner and top walls of the compartment and projects downwardly at the front as at 20 to a point adjacent the front wall of the body and forms an inclined or oblique vent opening therewith, as seen in Fig. 4, so air may circulate therethrough but direct light rays from the bulb filament will not pass therethrough. A second vent opening 22 is formed in the housing and communicates with the compartment ll. These openings serve to ventilate the compartment ll. The top wall of the housing 19 may project over the ends of the body to be secured thereto by means of screws 24 arranged in openings provided therefor in the side wall of the body. Mounted in the base of the compartment I1 is an electric conductor having an outlet i8 for the plug of the electric shaver, and a switch 2| controlled by a button 2'3. Connected with said electric conductor and mounted in the compartment I1 is an electric lamp '25 of usual or preferred form (conveniently an elongated bulb of the so-called show case type) having one end seated in an opening in a bracket '21, and its opposite end seated 'in a pair of opposing spring fingers 29 and '30. It will be noted that by this arrangement, the lamp is held in place securely but may be readily detached by disengaging it from the spring fingers for replacement with a new lamp. The lamp is connected with said electric conductor through one of said spring fingers 30 connected with the conductor at 3| and a contact 33 which resiliently engages the end of the lamp.
Referring particularly to the diagram of the electric conductors, the plug 35 thereof (Fig. 1) may be connected with any available or suitable source of energy. When the switch 2| is closed the current flows'throughfd'l and 43 to the spring linger 3'0 and the lamp. The outlet iii for the electric'shaver is arranged between the conductors 31 and ill and in parallel with the lamp. By this arrangement it will be noted that the lamp '25 is illuminated when the switch 2| is closed, independently of the operation of the electric shaver, and continues to be illuminated while the shaver is in operation.
The cover or lid 9 is connected to the body to swing thereon, from open to closed position, by means adapted to hold the lid resiliently in either open or closed position. To this end, one or more pairs of resilient hinge members are secured to the inside of the body by means of rivets 49 or other preferred means at a point near its bottom. Each pair of these hinge members projects above the body and comprises an inner blade or member 5| having an outwardly projecting stop 53 at its upper end, and an outer blade or member 55 having an inwardly projecting stop 51 at its upper end opposed to the stop 53. Mounted in the closure adjacent its rear edge is a blade or strap 6| adapted to be arranged between the opposing members 5| and 55 between which it may be resiliently engaged when the cover is in either open or closed position. When the lid is in its closed position, shown in Fig. 4, the blade 6| has one edge in engagement with the stop 51 on the outer member 55 and its other or opposite edge in engagement with the inner finger 5|. It will be noted that the blade is at this time inclined downwardly and inwardly from the stop 51 so that it is resiliently engaged by the inner blade which presses it against the stop 57 and resiliently retains the lid in closed position. If the lid is opened the blade swings between the resilient members and slides on their inner surfaces flexing them apart against their resiliency until the blade engages the stop 53 kit.
Secured in the inner face of the lid is a reflector or mirror 63 conveniently in position for use when the lid is open.
Since it is desirable to make the kit of light material to reduce its weight, its walls may be reinforced by means of the ribs. 55, formed on the inner walls of the kit, which ribs closely embrace the side edges of the hinge members 5| and 55 and hold them against lateral or rotary displacement. I
In use the kit is opened and the electrical extension 8! leading from the compartment I! through an opening in its rear wall may be removed from the compartment H and its plug 35 connected with any suitable source of electric energy. The shaver may also be removed from the kit and connected with the outlet I8, although it may be permanently connected therewith. If the switch 2| is closed, the lamp will be lighted and the current will be supplied to the shaver, which will operate when the usual control switch on the shaver itself is closed. The kit may be supported on a table or stand so that the light from the compartment I1 is directed upwardly and forwardly therefrom to the face of the shaver before the mirror 63. Since the kit is light and compact, it can be held in one hand while operating the shaver with the other, if there is no convenient support therefor.
It is seen from the foregoing disclosure that a construction is provided which admirably fulfills the above-mentioned objects of the invention. It is to be understood that the foregoing disclosure is givenbyway of illustrative example only, rather than by way of limitation, and that without departing from the invention, the construction may be varied within the scope of the appended claims.
