UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. JONES, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO THE EXOELSIOR LIFE SAVING OAR COUPLING COMPANY, OF
NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,838, dated August 16, 1881.
Application filed April 27, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. JoNEs, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the parts of my coupling separated from each other. Fig. 2 is alike view of the same combined for use. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section upon a longitudinal line, and shows the relative positions of parts at the instant when the link is passing beneath thelowerend of the couplingpin; and Fig. 4 is alike view of the same after said parts are engaged.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to increase the efficiency of car-coupliugs and to render the same more easy of manipulation; to which end it consists in a draw-head provided with 5 a longitudinally-slotted pinopening which has a semi-spherical upper end, in combination with a swinging unattached coupling-pin that is provided with a spherical head'which corresponds to and fits loosely within said socket,
3 substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a draw-head having the usual exterior form, and provided with arecess, a, which has a horizontal lower side and an upward and forwardly inclining upper side, and at its outer end has the usual flaring or bell-shaped mouth.
Passing vertically through the draw-head A at the line of division between its sections is 40 an opening, a, which at its upper end is round, and within the lower portion of said head is elongated rearwardly, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.. At its upper end the opening a is enlarged and made semi-spherical,and within the same is loosely fitted a coupling-pin, B, which has a plain cylindrical bodyand a spherical head, b, said head corresponding to and filling said enlarged portion of said openin Between the upper end of the opening a and the rear end of the recess a a recess, a is formed within the upper side of the latter, which has sufficient dimensions to permit the lower end of the couplingpin B to swing rearward and upward to the position shown in Fig. 3, during which movement the spherical head I) operates as a pivotal bearing for said pin. It, now, a link, C, is inserted within the draw-head A and moved longitudinally rearward, its end will engage with the pin B and swing the same rearward and upward until the lower end of said pin is sufficiently elevated to permit said link to pass beneath, as seen in Fig. 3, after which said pin will drop to its normal position and lock said link in place, as shown in Fig. 4.. The downward and rearward inclination of the upper side of the recess a operates to guide the inner end of said link to the lower side of said recess. To release said link it is only necessary that the pin be raised vertically until its lower end is above said link, as seen by the dotted lines of Fig. 4.
The coupling described can be set and engagement afterward effected by moving the ears together, the operation of parts being antomatic under such circumstances.
I am aware that hinged or pivoted couplingpins swinging within elongated openings in a draw-head are not new, and therefore do not claim the same broadly.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s Adrawdiead provided with a longitudinallyslotted pin-opening, which has asemi-spherical upper end, in combination with a swinging unattached coupling-pin that is provided with a spherical head which corresponds to and fits loosely within said socket, substantiallyas and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my 0 I hand in the presence of witnesses.
WILLIAM ROBERTSON JONES.
