This invention relates to shelf hangers.

It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a shelf hanger which is constructed in a simple manner from unitary hanger elements.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide a shelf hanger unit which may be assembled in sections for providing shelving of the desired length or of the desired multiplicity of levels.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide shelf hangers which are particularly suited for domestic use and which may be quickly and easily installed by the user.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide shelf hangers having considerable strength and rigidity, while at the same time being capable of quick assembly for use.

Qther objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the specification and claims.

The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating shelves embodying shelf hangers in accordance with the present invention;

Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of one of the shelf hanger units; and

Fig. 3 is a side elevational View of the hanger shown in Fig. 2.

It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawing herein are illustrative merely, and that various modifications and changes may be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention,

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the shelving, in accordance with the present invention, preferably includes a plurality of shelves l supported by spaced shelf hanger units I! hereinafter described. Each of the shelf hanger units H is preferably of the same size and shape and is made from a single piece of wire bent and shaped prior to use.

Each of the shelf hanger units H includes a pair of side arms I2 disposed in the same plane, the arms l2 preferably being straight throughout their length and parallel.

At the upper end portions of each of the arms l2, the ends are turned inwardly and downwardly to provide inwardly disposed hooks 13, each of the hooks [3 preferably being disposed in the same plane as that of the arms l2. At the lower end of each of the arms H, a concaved semicircularly shaped loop I4 is provided, preferably disposed in a plane normal to the plane in which the arms l2 are disposed.

The lower loops M are preferably connected at their upper ends, which are spaced from the arms [2, by a cross arm I5 which is disposed in a plane horizontal to the plane in which the side arms l2 are disposed. The cross arms l5 serve as the direct supports for the shelves I0 and the downward disposition of the loops l4 avoids any interference with the hanger mounted therebelow.

In use, as illustrated in Fig. 1, nails 16 or the like are provided at the proper spaced relationship upon any suitable support, and spaced shelf hanger units H are mounted thereon with the hooks I 3 in engagement therewith and supported thereby. As many hanger units H as desired are mounted therebelow with the hooks l3 thereof in engagement with the loops 14 at the lower ends of the side arms [2, the cross arms l5 serving as supports for the shelves Ill.

The shelf hangers can be assembled with as many units disposed vertically as desired, and as many units may be employed in a horizontal arrangement as desired, in accordance with the length of the shelf to be supported. If desired, additional shelf hangers and shelves may be mounted to increase the capacity of the shelving.

It will be noted that with the shelf hanger units ll herein described, no distinction need be made between right and left-handed hangers, as the shelf hanger units H are capable of bein employed facing in either direction.

I-claim:

1. A shelf hanger unit of a single piece of wire comprising spaced vertical side arms disposed in the same plane, a supporting hook at the upper end of each of the side arms and disposed in the same plane as the side arms, loops at the lower ends of the side arms adapted for engagement by supporting hooks of a hanger unit therebelow, said loops being disposed in planes normal to the plane in which the side arms are disposed, and a horizontally disposed shelf supporting cross arm connecting said loops, said cross arm being spaced from said side arms by said loops, said loops extending below said cross arms thereby providing for insertion and removal of the hooks of a hanger unit therebelow without removal of the shelf supported on said cross arm.

A shelf hanger unit of a single piece of wire comprising spaced vertical side arms disposed in 3 the same plane and parallel to each other, an inwardly extending supporting hook at the upper end of each of the side arms and disposed in the same plane as the side arms, open loops at the lower ends of the side arms adapted for engagement by supporting hooks of a hanger unit therebelow, said loops being disposed in planes normal to the plane in which the side arms are disposed, and a horizontally disposed shelf supporting cross arm connecting said loops, said cross arm being spaced from said side arms by said loops, said loops extending below said cross arms thereby providing for insertion and removal of the hooks of a hanger unit therebelow without removal of the shelf supported on said cross arm.
