This invention relates to improvements in fire alarm apparatus, and this application is a continuation in part of an application filed by me on May 17, 1947, Serial No. 748,681, now abandoned.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of fire alarm apparatus wherein separate alarms are located in diiierent locations each of which is adapted for independent operation in combination with a central station and connections thereto so that the operation of any one of said alarms is indicated at the central station and said separate alarms may be operated from said station.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanyin drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a fire alarm embodying novel features of the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a wiring diagram embodying novel features of the invention.
An alarm casing 2 is shown in Fig. 1 which as in the above referred to applicationencloses an alarm member, not shown herein the member 2 is a mechanical a arm releasable by the lever Ill. A platform 4 is secured to the casing and a post 6 extends therefrom and has secured thereto a heat responsive element 8 which may be an elongated strip of bi-metal adapted when subjected to heat to release atrigger H] which is pivoted to the platform 4 at l2.
The trigger on being released allows the alarm to function as described in said application.
Alarms may be located in different compartments such as the different rooms of a hotel or the like and each will be independently operable. That is, the heat responsive element of any one of the alarms when subjected to a certain elevated temperature will set off the alarm.
According to this invention as any one of the alarms of a group is actuated, the same is indicated at a central station and all of the alarms of said group may be actuated if desired.
The heat responsive elements of a plurality of alarm devices are indicated by 8 in Fig. 2 and it will be assumed that said alarms will be located in different locations such as different rooms or compartments.
Contacts such as I G are carried by the heat responsive elements 8 which engage contacts l8 when subjected to such temperature as is intended to release the triggers Ill.
At a central station remote from the alarms there is a signal 2!) which may be a gong or signal light as shown and a circuit closing device 22.
The other side of the source of power 30 is connected by 32 to the heat responsive elements 8.
The e ectromagnets 20 are connected by 34 to connections 32 and by 36 to circuit closing device 22.
In the event the heat responsive element of any of the alarms is actuated so as to release the alarm mechanism the same is instantly indicated by the signal which as stated will be located at a central station remote from the alarms If desired and necessary, the switch device 22 may be operated as to energize the electromagnets 20 and thereby actuate the plural alarms and the operation of said switch device is independent of the alarms.
Thus the actuation of any alarm or alarms is indicated at the central station while the alarms may be actuated at any time from said station.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended c aim rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
Fire alarm apparatus comprising in combination, a plurality of separate alarm mechanisms each including, a movable alarm actuating member and a flexible movable heat responsive element adapted to releasably hold said member in non-actuating position and to move and release said member as it moves under the influence of heat, pairs of contacts one of which is carried by each of said heat responsive elements and the other of which is separate therefrom and engaged by the said one contact as said element moves under the influence of heat, an electrically operated control alarm, a source of electrical energy, circuit connections between said source of energy, alarm and said pairs of contacts whereby as any heat responsive element moves under the influence of heat the alarm is energized, solenoidsv operati-cally related to said heat responsive elements and adapted when energized to move said elements and bring the contacts of the pairs into engagement, other circuit connections connected to the first-named connections and to said source of energy, and a switch in said last named circuit connections for closing said other circuit connections for simultaneously energizing the solenoids from said source of power and simultaneously moving said elements to engage said contacts and energize said alarm.
