Description

A. FERRETTI ATOMIZING OIL BURNER Dec. 21, 1948.
Filed April 21., 1939 A' mw 9 a.
Patented Dec. 21, 1948 ATOMIZING OIL BURNER Attilio Ferretti, Milan, Italy Application' April 21, 1939, Serial No. 269,159 In Italy April 26, 1938 2 claims. (c1. 15s-77) The burner of the invention as will be understood by any person skilled in the art, may be used for burning coal powder, gases, or mixtures of finely divided fuel of any kind. The invention needs therefore only a description in connection with oil, it being lunderstood th-at, but for a driving medium (air current) the name of any subdivided fuel may be substituted for oil in the specification.
The invention relates to an oil burner particularly designed to burn crude oil of high density.
One object of the invention is to provide a burner in which the oil is subjected to a grinding action in order to subdivide any particle thereof which might obstruct the passages wherein it flows or might cause difficulties in obtaining an intim-ate mixture with air.
A further object of the invention is to impart to the oil a helical motion which delays its flow under the jets of air and causes the latter to mix intimately with it.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plurality of air jets which cooperate from all sides of a conical oil spray to form a very rich and intimate mixture of oil and air.
A further object of the invention is to provide a burner which needs a small pressure of the air and a low temperature of the oil to attain a complete combustion of the latter.
A further object of the invention is to eliminate from the smoke any particles of carbon or solid residue.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will now be described with reference to the annexed drawing in which Fig. 1 represents a longitudinal middle section of an embodiment of the invention and Fig. 2 is a, cross section on line 2, 2 of Fig. 1.
The improved burner comprises an air pipe I, receiving air from a proper source (compressor) through the adjustable throttle valve 2, .said pipe I having at its forward end a bell shaped cup 3. An oil pipe 4 surrounds said air pipe VI while pil, from a proper source (not shown) :flows through the annular space 5 towards the outside surface of the bell shaped cup 3. v
A second bell shaped cup 6 is connected to the forward end of a sleeve 8 which is rotatably mounted on the pipe 4 within ball bearings 9 which are lodged in a support ID, provided with radial blades or ribs I I dependent from the tubular body I2. Said tubular body I2 is connected at one end to the air source, through a union piece I3, provided with a throttle valve I4.
-The bell shaped cup 5 and the bell shaped cup 3 run parallel to one another for a fraction of their end surfaces and from a narrow conical passage 3 for the oil from pipe 4, to eject it into a conical burning spray. On the neck of the cup 6 or any dependent part thereof, there is mounted a turbine wheel made of a hub I6 with radial blades or ribs Il which connect the hub I'B to the rotor I8, wherefrom project radially the paddles I 9,y almost reaching the inside surface of the tubular body I2.
The forward end of both the tubular body I2 and the rotor I8 are provided with bell shaped cups. Another bell shaped cup 22 may be provided inside and adjacent to the cup 3 of the central air pipe I to form -a conical air passage 23. Holes 24, 25 in the neck portion of the cups I and 3, give passage to jets of air which strike the conical flow of oil from outside and from inside. The holes 25 are provided with a star valve 26 lodged within the cup 3, said valve being operated manually through stem 21 and handwheel 28.
The burner works as follows: The air forced from the proper source (compressor) into the tubular body I 2 strikes the paddles I 9 of the turbine and sets the cup 6 in rotation. The oil being forced into the conical passage between the cups 6 and 3, undergoes in said passage a grinding action which subdivides any particle thereof. The rotating motion being communicated to the oil, the latter discharges from the passage 3 into a conical rotating and progressing spray.
While the oil is advancing towards the narrow passage between the cups 6 and 3, air is ejected from the holes 24 and 25 into the pipes 8 and I and precisely in the neck portion of the cups 6 and 3. The spray of oil discharging from the apparatus expands in the combustion chamber and receives additional air from the passage 23 formed 4between the cups 3 and 22, from the passage between rotor I8 and the cup 6, and from the passage between the rotor I8 and the body I2. The oil spray will thus burn when extremely rich in air. In order to shift the bell shaped cup 3 longitudinally to narrow or widen the passage 3' there is provided a screw threaded device operating on the pipe i. Said device is acted upon through a hand Wheel 2B' which turns spindle 29 having one end rotatably mounted in a socket 30 xed to the pipe I and the other threaded end connected to an inwardly threaded piece 3|, projecting from the sleeve 32 surrounding the pipe 4.
In order to regulate the speed of the turbine to any desirable value, independently of the air pressure as admitted into the tubular body l2, there is provided a braking device consisting of a threaded spindle 34 crossing the Wall of the tubular body I2, said spindle having a block 32 at its end resting on the cylindrical surface of the rotor I8.
Through handwheel 35 the braking pressure is regulated according to necessities.
Having now particularly described the nature of my invention and the manner in which th same should be performed I claim:
l. A burner for crude oil comprisingya rnainair pipe, a secondary air pipe Within said m-ain'air pipe and an oil pipe Within said rnai-rha'irl pipe and surrounding said secondary airl pipe; conical lbell shaped cups at the discharge ends, ,olf said;
2. A burner for crude ,oil comprising an oil pipe With one end connected to an Qilsource, a main air pipe, surrounding Said oil pipe anda Secondary air .pipe Within Said Oilppe, ,each of saidair pipes having one vend connected ,to andair source; ybell shaped cups at the discharge ends of said oil and air pipes, the cup at the end of said oil pipe and the cup at the end of said secondary air pipe having portions of their conical surfaces substantially parallel to one another and forming an annular passage, the bell shaped cup at the end of said oil pipe being rotatably connected thereto and a turbine Wheel on said last named cup,*with*@ladesprotruding Iinto :said main air pipe; means to shift the secondary air ypipe and its end cup longitudinally relatively to said oil pipe and cup to vary the sectional area of said annular conical passage, the cup walls forming said yannular passage being provided with aper- .turesivtoconvey air to the oil flowing in said Psag ATTILIO PERRETTI.
