Description

H. SATTLER WIRE STRETCHER Dec. 21, 1948.

Patented Dec. 21,` 1948 unirme fsflATEs ATENT v'OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in wire stretchers designed primarily for use in the straightening of sagging strands of fence wire so as to tighten the wire and the invention has for its rimary object to provide an attachment for the wire and adapted for engaging the sagging portion thereof and re tained in a position on the wire to maintain the are in a taut position.
tiere specifically the invention embodies the use oi a rigid plate member having hook members adapted for engagement by the sagging portion of the wire and embodying means engageable with the wire for pulling the latter into position for engagement by the respective hook members.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wire stretcher of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to operate and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
@ther objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference behad to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer 'to like parte throughout, and in which ""gure l is a front elevational View.
gure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on a line 2 2 of Figure 1, but with the vertical screw and collar therefor shown in elevation, and
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a substantially triangular shaped rigid plate member having a plurality of ver rically spaced hook members E struck from the material thereof. The side edges of the plate, adjacent its upper edges, are formed with inturned anges l behind which the strand of wire 8 may be pulled for engagement with the respective hooks d.
A triangular shaped holder plate Il is formed with side iianges i8 forming guides for receiving the lower edges of the plate 5 and a handle i9 projects horizontally from one edge of the plate il.
The lower end of the plate member Il termi natos in a threaded lug 9 in which a Vertical screw lil is operable, the lower end of the screw having a crank handle Il formed thereon and the upper end of the screw having a smooth portion l2 on which a collar I3 is slidably mounted,
the collar being retained on the screw by means of a washer lil and Cotter pin l5.
rEhe lower edge of the collar E3 is formed with pair of lugs l@ spaced from the screw l@ behind which screw the wire 6 is received for engagement by the lugs it.
The holder il is removably positioned on the lower end of the plate 5 and in the operation of the device and with the holder plate l'l placed in engagement with the plate 5, as shown in Figure l of the drawing, the wire d is engaged behind the lugs lli and the collar i3 moved downwardly on the screw l@ so that the sagging portion of the wire, as shown by the dotted line positicn in Figure i of the drawing, can be moved into engagement with the uppermost hook S. Should it be desired to further tighted the wire S the collar i3 is moved into engagement with the threaded portion of the screw it so that the rotation of the screw will then cause a downward traveling movement of the collar and thus pull the sagging portion or the strand of wire S downwardly for engagement with one of the lower hooks.
Any desired number of the plates 5 may be placed on the wire suiiiciently to take up the sagging portion thereof and after the wire has been engaged with a desired hook i3 the holder and screw le together with the collar i3 are removed from the plate 5 and the plate 5 retained in engagement with the wire.
it is believed the details of construction, operation and advantages of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detail explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. A wire stretcher comprising a rigid plate member having at opposite edges flanges spaced from the remaining part and disposed in substantial alignment, a plurality of hooks on the side of the plate facing said fianges and spaced from one another on a line intermediate the edges of said plate, a holder disposed against the other side of said plate and having at opposite edges guides engaging the edges of said plate, means for engaging a wire extending above the flanges, a second means cooperating with the holder and including a portion guiding said first means axially of said second means and also including threads coacting with the iirst means,
2. A wire stretcher comprising a rigid triangular plate member having at opposite edges lianges spaced from the remaining part and dispgsed in substantial alignment, a plurality of hooks on the side of the plate facing said flanges and spaced from one another on a line intermediate the edges of said plate, a triangular holder disposed against the other side of said plate and having at opposite edges guides engaging the edges of said plate adjacent the apex remote from the anges, means for engaging a wire extending above the anges, a second means cooperating with the holder and including a portion guiding said rst means axially of said second means and also including threads ooacting with the first means.
