Description
Dec. M, 1948. R. c. SEYFORTH HARDWARE PACKAGE AND DISPLAY Filed Oct. 4, 1945 Jfg.
INVENTOR. ROME C.SEYFOR1 'H ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 14, 1948 HARDWARE PACKAGE AND DISPLAY Rome 0. Seyforth, Shelby, Ohio, assignor to The Shelby Metal Products Company, 511011117. Ohio. a corporation of Ohio Application October 4, 1945, Serial N0. 620,201
1 Claim.
are packaged in small cartons in which the requisite number of screws is included either loose, or at the best wrapped in a small piece of paper. On the other hand, where the article is attached to a card for the purpose of display, the screws or equivalent fasteningmeans require to be sorted out from a bin and separately dispensed to the customer. With either of the foregoing methods, not infrequently mistakes are made not only in the number of screws supplied but in the latter case in the selection of the proper screws,
In the above-identified patent it is proposed to overcome the foregoing difficulties by securing the hardware article to the display face of a card with the screws or other headed fasteners secured to the same card by being inserted from the back of the card through suitable openings therein so that their shanks will project from such display face, their heads and thus the fasteners themselves being maintained in place by a portion of the card which forms a folded flap portion.
One principal object of the present invention is to provide in a display card or package of the type just described means for mounting and inserting the desired number of fasteners without having to place them individually in the card. A further object is to insure against mistakes or omissions in inserting such required number of fasteners. Still a further object is to provide a mounting for screws or like fasteners to which they may be affixed by mechanical means, thus further reducing the amount of manual labor involved in assembling display packages or cards of the type in question.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention then consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing: a
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a display card or package embodying my present improvements, such card being shown as having a typical hardware article with requisite number of screws therefor attached to its front or display face;
Fig. 21s a plan view of such card in its unfolded position without such partsattachedtheretoi:
171g. 3 is a vertical broken section throu h the lower po tion. of such card showing my improved. mounting whereby such screws are attached to the card;
Fig. 4 is a broken transverse section of the same portion of the card, 171161 1311610]? the section being indicated by the line 4--4,Fig 3;
Fig. 5 is a broken perspective view of the mounting strip which carries thescrews orlike fasteners; and
Fig. 6 is. a similar brok n perspe tive vi w hewin the reverse side of such strip. q 7
Referring first to Figs 1 and 2, the display card proper, as in. the case of the patented device, is designed to carry on its front or display face an article H of hardware or the like, shown for the purpose of illustration as consisting of a pair of ornamental cupboard hinges together with the requisite number of screws S for affixing the same, such number, likewise for purpose of illustration only, being assumed to be twelve. It will be understood that any descriptive legend, dimension indicia or the like (not shown) as may be desired can be imprinted on the front face to which the articles in question are thus attached. As before, the card comprises a main body portion I having a lower portion 2, preferably marked off by means of a crease 3, which is adapted to be folded back against the rear face of such main body. The proper number of holes 4 occupying properly spaced relation, is provided in the main body portion through which any suitable fastening means, such as clips 5, may be passed in order to secure the article H to the front face of the card. Similarly a series of holes 6 is provided parallel with and slightly spaced from the lower edge of such main body portion, through which holes the shanks of the screws S are designed to project.
As best shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, said screws S are not inserted directly through holes 6, but are carried by a tape or strip 1 which initially, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, may, and will preferably, be of indefinite length. Such strip 1 will preferably be made of light weight cardboard or heavy paper, but any equivalent material capable of receiving and holding the screws shanks adjacent the heads thereof so that when inserted the screws will be frictionally, held against displacement.
The strip to which screws "have thusbeen'attached is then severed transversely at spaced points 9 to provide lengths or sections which carry the proper number of screws, for assembly with the particular display card. It will benoted that the holes 6 along the lower edge of the latter through which the shanks of the screws carried by such strip section 1 fprotrudeiwill be slightly largerxindiametertthan such-shanks so that the whole-seriespof screws may beivery easily and quicklyibrought into'register with and simultaneously-inserted through such holes; The strip with the screws carried thereby is then secured in place.byfolding/the flap 2 so as to contact with the rearportion ofthe strip i. e. that against which: the headss of-the screws lie. One of the staples or fasteners 5 'whereby the article of hardwareis secured-=to'the face 'of-ithe -card maybe conveniently used also to hold such flap' 'im the folded position justdescribed v 'It will be eVident-fthatthe insertion of the screws in strip 'l 'ina'y beeasily'and rapidlycarried outeven where'the operation is manualIy performed and that 'such operation can be further expedited by using a screw feeding machine in "conjunction with a mechanism which will feed a continuous length of the tape with a step-by step movement} the length of thesteps corresponding with the'desir'ed spacingv of the screws. In any event, the manual operation of assembling the screws in the display card is greatly simplified and since the cut sections being used will always carry exactly the right number of screws there is no danger of one or more being accidentally omitted from the assembly.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by the following claim or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
In a display device for hardware and like articles requiring screws or equivalent headed fasteners, the combination with a card having a face portion adapted to have such article attached thereto and a series of apertures adapted ROME C. SEYFORTH.
