Description

(No Model.)
B. M. WINSLOW/ FRUIT DRIER.
Patented Aug. 9
u. PETERS. mw-uxm m nw. Washington a c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ENOCH M. WINSLOW, OF SPRINGPORT, MICHIGAN.
FRUIT-DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,595, dated August 9, 1881.
Application filed January 8, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENOOH M. WINsLow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springport, in the county of J ackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Driers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a portable fruit-drier adapted for efficient use upon ordinary kitchenstoves; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter setforth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
I have observed that a large quantity of fruit has heretofore been allowed to decay and spoil which might have been preserved by drying, and afterward used as edibles or delicacies.
The object of my invention is to construct such a fruit-drier as will adapt itself to the wants of the poorer classes, and such a device as may be utilized by any persons having a furnace or stove.
The device is formed of sections, and adapted to be used, one or more of the sections, as desired, upon any lritchen-stoveof ordinary form or construction, a common cover serving upon the top section efficiently, whether one or more are employed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a central transverse section, showing a portion of the front of the stove in elevation; Fig. 2, a 7
central longitudinal section at right angles thereto. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cover, and Fig. 4 a section showing one ot'the frames partly removed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the stove, which may be of any form or size.
For convenience I will describe but two sections, one the base-section and the other the top-section; but it must be understood that any desired number may be used.
B represents the base-section, preferably slightly larger than the area of the top of the stove, and adapted to sit or rest upon the top forward of the stove-pipe. This section rests upon two or more bars or legs, B, secured to the section, and the lower outer edges are provided with hook-flanges b, which serve to support deflectors, gatherers, or aprons, O, as shown. Three of these aprons-i. 0., the ones upon each side and the one upon the front extend below the horizontal plane of the stovetop, while the depth of the one next the pipe is of such approximate extent as to reach the top snugly. These aprons O serve to gather the rays of heat radiated from the sides of the stove and deflect them into the interior of the section. Upon the inner surface of this section are secured guide-rests 1), upon which slides a tray, 0, having a perforated bottom; and secured to this tray is a portion, 0, which forms the front of the pan. The upper edge of this section forms a seat at d, upon which rests the adjacent section D, which is also provided with guide-rest d and frame-pan D. The upper section is provided with a perforated removable top, E, as shown.
The removable perforated pans may be more than one in number in each section, and they serve to hold the fruit to be dried. The rays pass upward from one section to the adjacent one above, and the saturated atmosphere passes out of the perforated top.
The operation and advantages of the device from the foregoing description will be obvious, the portability, cheapness, simplicity, and efficiency being of great importance in the art to which it belongs.
I am aware that driersnnade in sections and having removable trays and perforated tops are not new, and therefore they are not broadly claimed by me.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Aportable fruit-drier made in sections and having removable fruit holdin g pans, combined with a perforated cover, a heat-radiatin g surface, and means for deflecting radiating rays of heat from the sides of the stove into the drying device, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The fruit-drier described, formed of the base-section having legs B, hook-flanges b,
guide-rests b, and aprons O, and a perforated In testimony whereof I aflix my signature cover, E, as and for the purposes set forth. in presence of two witnesses.
3. The combination of the base-section B B, 1 having hook-flanges b,guide-rests b, and rests LNOOH WINSLOW' 5 (I, the section D, the removable trays, the Witnesses:
aprons O, and the perforated cover E, as and FRANK A. WINSLOW, tor the purposes specified. DALLAS UAsTER.
