1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in ash receptacies particularly those Which are designed to smother cigarettes and the like under certain predetermined conditions.
An object of this invention is to provide means for extinguishing cigarettes and the like.
A further object of this invention is to provide specially contoured extinguishing means which are accessible from a plurality of positions.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device for providing increased safety and facility in extinguishing cigarettes.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a device of extreme mechanical simplicity and durability which lends itself Well to commercial manufacture and production principles.
Ancillary ob-jects and features of novelty Will become readily apparent or Will be specifically pointed out in following the description of the preferred embodiments of the present invention, illustrated in the accompanying draWings, Wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a single embodiment of the present invention; and
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the invention shown in Figure 1 and takensubstantially on the line 2-2 thereof and in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now in detail to the illustrations in the accompanying drawings, like reference characters are used throughout to indicate similar elements.
A receptacle of generally cylindrical configuration is provided With slightly tapered Walls thereof. It is noted at this point that many materials of construction may be employed including commercial plastic, metal, glass and the like. For ease in manufacture the receptacle IO is preferably of monobolic construction. The lowermost corners I l are rounded attributing to ease in cleaning.
Referring now to the embodiment of the present invention, a head 32 is provided With tapered stub-shafts 34 at the terminal portions of the longitudinal central aXis thereof. The said stubshafts are preferably of rounded cross section and are adapted to be received in punchings or detents 35 made in receptacle IO. It is apparent that the said head 32 may be rotated about the shafts 34 as in axis. A plurality of circular circumferentially disposed grooves 28 are provided in the head 32 and a plurality of apertures 36 are provided therethrough also. The said apertures 36 are substantially Venturi-shaped thereby permitting access from either end for extinguishing cigarettes and the like It is noted that a cigarette need only be inserted in the said apertures 36 in order to extinguish the same. It is also noted that each aperture 36 accommodates two cigarettes, the second of Which will eject the other therefrom into the receptacle I 0.
Of the three apertures shown in Figure 2, two fiank the grooves 28, while the third is between said grooves. Also, the said third aperture is disposed at substantially relative to the other two apertures for convenience of use.
It is apparent that a device has been described herein Which is designed to add to smoking pleasure in an improved and novel manner. The cigarette stubs are extinguished quickly, and conveniently thereby eliminating the need for grinding and stomping the same out. The receptacle |0 is easy to clean because the ashes have not been rubbed therein, cigarette stubs having been effectively extingushed before being rdeposited in the receptacle. It will be noted that this medium also eliminates smoldering within the receptacle. Even forgotten cigarettes, in the double purpose slots 28, are extinguished without falling from their rested position. Obviously, this is a safety factor since there is no possibility for cigarettes to fall on inflammable furniture and like.
It is obvious from the foregoing, that each of the elements of this invention are designed for mass production methods and common shop principles. Various materials may be employed for this purpose, as has been set forth hereinabove.
Due to the extreme mechanical simplicity characterizingV this invention, a further description thereof is deemed unnecessary. It is understood however, that various changes as to size and shape may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly, limitations are desired only in accordance with the scope of the following claim.
Having thus described the instant invention What is claimed as novel and improved is as follows:
An ash tray comprising a receptacle having Walls and diametrically opposed detents integrally formed in said Walls, a transverse head member having a central axis, relatively short tapered shafts on said axis at the ends of said head member and rotatively positioned in said detents, the central axis of said head member being positioned adjacent the top of said receptacle placing an appreciable pcrtion of said head member above the top of said receptacle, a pair of cigarette receiving and extinguishing apertures in said head member and a third cigarette receiving and extinguishing aperture in said head member subh Ama 4 stantally norml to sid pair of apertures, end UNITED STATES PATENT spaced substantlally clrcular clgarette rece1vmg grooves formed circumferentially in said head" Number Name Date member, said grooves being disposed between said '755,.446 Butcher Mal'- 22, 1904 pair Qf apertures 5 1,691,564 CaldWen NOV. 13, 1928 1,999,245 MacKenzie Apr. 30, 1935 MICHAEL P- OMELINA- 2,172,161 Du Prey sept. s, 1939 REFERENCES CITED FOREIGN PATENTS The following references are of record in the m Number Country Date file of this patent;l 652,101 Germany Oct.
