4 .Claims (ol. 155-148) The present inventionrelates to improvements in chairs and more particularly vto collapsible chairs. vOccasions often exist when it is desir-` able to carry a chair fabput Aones personin going from one place toanotlrer as to a picnic, ball game, and on an outing in general. It'is neces-` sarv for such purposes to reduce the dimensions ofthe chair or seat so as to limitits bulk, make it compact,.and render it iit tobe carried around in the usual close quarters of ra vehicle. invention `consists in the combination, arrangement and details of construction vdisclosed in the drawings and specification-and then more partieularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The chair is composed of a seat, panel, a back rest panel and seat supporting side panels interconnected movably for collapsation one upon the other. When it isdesired to erect all partsof the foldable chair into formation of a conveniently shaped chair or seat, the procedure will be as follows.

24 and 25 will iirst be fully opened and made to abut seat panel '23. They will then be let down with the recesses bottom rest I6 upon the ground or floor so as to support the seat panel'Z in horizontal position.l

In order to prevent collapse of the seat supporting panels 24, and also support back rest panel I 0 in upright position, the back rest panel I3, will be tilted back on its hinges 25 to cause its minor rectangular portion I4 to project between the

side panels

The hook bills 31 will then be let down so as to engage around the pins 22 ofV rod 2li and be confined by the heads 32 of these pins. This assures that the back rest panel I0 of the chair will remain in a rigidly erect position, and that allu panels comprising the collapsible chair are securely held in interconnected releasable position. It will be seen that when the panels are folded back into collapsed' relation upon seat panel 26 that segmental edge 3Ia thereof will nicely coincide with segmental edge 3l on sector-shape piece 30. It ywill also be seen that shoulder I9 of panel I0 may be caused, as in Figure 2, to seat upon the top edges of

panels

24 and 25.

`I do not intend to limit myself to the exact details of construction disclosed in the drawings and speciiication herein but intend to cover all variations thereof.

What I desire to claim is:

1. A device as described consisting of oppositely arranged upright seatsupporting panels formed with horizontal elongated recesses, a seat surmounting the top edges of said panels, a back rest movably mounted to said seat in surmountable relationship and having its lower portion e arranged to extend between said panels, studs carried by opposing edges of said lower portion of the back rest, entering said recesses and having annular grooves terminally, with complemental engaging hooks carried by said panels to latch said back rest erect upon said seat.

2. In a device as described, the combination cfa back rest panel formed with a recess upon one end edge thereof, a rod spanning said recess, being attached to said panel and having its opposite ends projecting beyond the side edges of the panel and formed with headed pins, a seat hingedly connected to said back rest panel, a seat supporting pair of oppositely arranged panels engageable with said back rest panel and hinged on said seat in a manner'that said back rest panel may move from collapsed position to erect position to close said supporting panels upon opposing edges of said back rest panel, said seat supporting panels being formed with recesses opening out of their rear edges into which the ends of said rod project as said back rest panel moves into a position between said seat supporting panels, and hooks movably carried by said seat supi porting panels engaging said pins to latch the back rest panel in' erect position.

3. In combination a seat panel having a segment-shaped piece secured thereupon with its straight edge ush with one of the side edges of said panel, a pair of seat supporting panels having top edges hinged, respectively the first upon one margin of the seat and the second upon the straight marginal edge of the sector shaped piece, and having bottom edges formedwith concave recesses, the first supporting panel swinging down in overlapping relation upon said seat with its concave recessed edge coinciding with the convex edge of said segment-shaped piece, the sec#v ond supporting panel swinging down into overlapping position upon said rst supporting panel and said sector shaped piece, and a prop hinged transversely along the rear edge of the seat so as to swing between said seat supporting panels for the purpose of lspreading them apart.

4. Inl combination a seat having a pair of supporting panels arranged at opposite sides thereof, said panels formed with horizontal recessesv upon their rear edges, a back rest panel having itsl major length extending above said seat in hinged relation and having a minor portion ex-` tendingslidably between said supporting panels, oppositely arranged studs carried by the minor portion of said back rest panel designed to move into said recesses, and means on said seat supporting panels engaging said studs to hold the baci: rest panel in rigid upright position relativelyv to said seat.
