2 Claims.
This invention relates to a device to be employed in the process of assembling ladies handbags, and has particular reference to a ydevice or stand which is adapted to hold a hingedframe which forms a part of a completed handbag while the bag portion of the handbag isbeing attached thereto.
Heretofore, during the process of assembling handbags or attaching the bag proper to the,
hinged frame, the operation was performed by an operator who rst secured the hinged frame in a vise, then by means of a treadle brought the vise down to the holding frame, then manipulated the attaching edge of a bag opening into grooves upon the hinged frames and forced the said edge into the grooves and cementing same therein. This operation, while being laborious, is at the same time crude and unnecessarily prolongs the time requiredto complete the assembling.
The object of my invention is to provide a device which will hold the hinged frame securely, and in a fixed position, thereby allowing both hands of the operator to be employed in handling 'the bag during its attachment to the frame,fthus simplifying the operation and reducing the time heretoforejrequired and materially reducing the cost of production. A still further object of this invention is the provision of an organization in which the constituent elements are so arranged structurally and functionally as to assure improved results with materials which may be manufactured'V at reasonable cost, may be easily assembledA and which will be eiioient in operation with minimum wear to the parts. .ff/' i The invention possesses other objects an features of advantage, some of which, with the ,foregoing will be set forth in the following description and in the claims wherein parts will be identied by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit. In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated the best embodiment of the invention known to me, but such embodiment is to be regarded as 2 typical only of many possible embodiments, an the invention is not to be limited thereto.
The novel features considered characteristic of my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its organization and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood from the following description of a specific embodiment when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front, elevational view of my device showing a hinged frame of a handbag locked in position upon the device, and also shows by dot and dash lines the approximate position of a handbag with respect to the hinged frame.
Figure 2 is a side, elevational view of my device.
Figure 3 is'a top or plan view of same.
Figure 4 is a sectional elevation taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 3, and shows the locking frame of the device in a partially raised position and the hinged frame in place upon the device.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation of a detail which will be hereinafter described.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken along line 6-6 of Figure 5, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 'l is a plan view taken along the line '1 -I of Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a sectional plan View taken along the line 8-8 of Figure 1, and
Figure 9 is a fragmentary, sectional view showing the method of employing the device when attaching the handbag to a hinged frame.
Referring in detail to the parts, Il designates axsupporting block to which is pivotly attached a'fbase-.fmember I2. The said base member is held upon the supporting blo-ck II by means of a pin or bolt and nut I3, and has disposed between it and the said base block a spacer washer I4 to permit rotary movement to the said base member.
Slideably attached to the said base member I2, are front and rear standards I5 and I6 respectively, and side standards I 1. Depending from the foot portion of each standard there are formed fins I8 which engage within grooves I9 formed in said base member to hold the said standards in true alignment. The upper portion of the said front and rear standards I5 and I6 is, in each case, formed with platforms 20 and 2| respectively, while the upper portion of each side standard I'I is formed with a platform or framing members 22.
Adjustable guide members 23 are slideably attached to the said platforms 22 and are held thereon by means of screws 24 which engage through slots 25 formed upon the said guide members. The said set screws 24 are threaded into the platforms 22. A third guide member 26, having a slotted projecting portion 21 formed thereon, is attached to the front platform 2li and is held thereon by the screws 28, which are attached to the said front platform 20 and which engage through slots 29 formed in the said guide member.26. iA fourth guide member 311| issecured to the rearplatform' 2I'and is fastened'thereto by means of the screws 3| which are secured to the said rear platform 2|, and which engage in slots 32 upon said guide memberf30.
The said rear guide member 30 is formed with a. rearwardly projecting portion 33 which terminates in a hinge 34, to Whichthe hinged portion of a holding and locking frame 35 is attached.
The said hinged holding and locking frame 135 Y hinged'rame 36, as shown'infFigures 4 and 9 and 'by-dot and da'shline in Figure 6.
Operation 'Ladies' handbags consist essentially of two partsya -bagportion made up of any suitable, flexiblematerial, and Va hinged frame to which thebagportion is attached. The said hinged frame maybe Iof any form orv shape, such as a square, la`rectangle as-shown in the drawings, a circle, part circle or any other-practical form. All, howeven'are provided with a groove or socket formed along the inside edge of same within whichthe edge of the bag proper is secured.
The device herein described and shown in the accompanying drawings is designed to provide a holding means in vwhich the said hinged frame is positioned and held While both hands of the operator are free tomanipulate the bag and any tool necessary to attach the bag proper to the hinged frame.
In the application of the device to the assembling of the handbag parts, the guiding members 23,28 and 30 of the device are'so'set that the beads 38 thereon line up in juxtaposition with the grooved inside edge of the hinged frame 36 (see Figure-4). The'said hinged holding and locking frame 35 is then clamped down upon the 4 said hinged frame ,36 and held in locked position by the spring lock 31 (see Figures 1 and 2).
Any suitable, adhesive material such as glue or the like, is applied Within the groove G (Figure 9), and the edge of the bag proper B is forced or jammed into the said groove G. For this purpose a pusher tool T, having a broadened, flattened end E may be employed (see Figure 9).
An attachment pin 39 in the hinge 34-35 may be removable'so that theframe 35 may be readily interchanged when a different form or shape of hinged frame is to be held upon the device.
In addition to the provision shown for adjustyfi-ngthe said guide members 23, 26 and 30, the
standards I5, I6 and I1 may be adjusted, when necessary, through its attachment means to the saidbase member I2. Bolts and nuts 43 and 4I respectively, engaging in slots 62 upon the said base member I2 as shown, may be provided.
