Description

1 E. WALCOTT.
Gas Retort.
Patented June 21, 1 859.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD WALCOTT, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
G-AS-RETORT.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,510, dated June 21, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD VVALoo'rT, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Retorts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, in which,-
Figure 1 exhibits a central vertical section of the front portion of a retort and mouthpiece attached with my improvements. Fig. 2 exhibits a horizontal section of the retort, and mouth piece attached, and a top view of the lid and the means of securing it.
Similar letters of reference denote like parts in both figures.
To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, is the body of the retort, which may be of the 'D or any other shape in its transverse section; and B, is the mouthpiece constructed and attached in the usual manner to the body, but made shorter than usual so as not to project so far from the furnace or bench, so as to present as small an area of exposed surface to the atmosphere as possible.
C, is the socket cast with the mouthpiece to receive the stand pipe.
D, is the lid of the mouth piece which, instead of consisting of a mere plate like those in common use, is made with an internal projecting piece a, a, b, Z), of a form to enter the mouthpiece B and present an inclined plane a, 64, extending all across the mouthpiece, commencing at the extreme top and front thereof, and extending downward and backward to or beyond the back thereof, forming an angular space between the inner and outer plate or surface of the lid and the bottom of the mouth-piece, from which the gas is excluded by luting the parts of the lid which press against the mouthpiece as is usual in fastening lids of retorts. This internal projecting piece obviously prevents the collection of tar in the bottom of the mouth-piece, and serves to conduct back into the retort, to be decomposed, any tar that may descend upon it from the stand-pipe, while it in no way interferes with the escape of the gas from the retort into the pipe, and on being withdrawn from the mouth piece, leaves the bottom of the mouth-piece perfectly clean, so that the burning coke may be at once withdrawn without annoyance from burning tar.
I, I, are handles on the exterior of the lid, one above and the other below the cross bar F, for taking hold of to put the lid in place and remove it from the mouth piece.
E, E, are two hooks or slotted lugs secured to the sides of the front of the mouth-piece B, for lid D to rest upon.
F, is ahorizontal cross bar passing through said hooks or lugs; and G, is an eccentric or cam attached'to said cross bar by a vertical pin (Z, and having attached a lever H, by which it is turned in one direction to make it press against the center of the lid D, to force the same close up to the mouth of the retort, or in the other direction to liberate and permit the removal of the cross bar and the subsequent removal of the lid. This combination of the cam and cross-bar constitute a cheaper and more handy means of securing and liberating the lid than the screw attachment in common use.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with the lid D, of the projecting incline plane a, a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth and described.
2. The employment, for securing the lid of the mouth piece of the retort in place, of a horizontal eccentric or cam G, and lever H, attached to and combined with a crossbar F, and applied to the mouthpiece of the retort substantially as herein described.
EDVV. VVALCOTT.
