However, means may be provided for moving the; adjusted plate in both directions. This is illustrated in Fig. 3 in which the shank of the screw 64 extends through a vertical recess 66 in the boss 63 of the adjusting plate 54 and a collar 61 which is fixedly secured to the screw fits within and engages the complementary walls of the recess 66.
When the adjusting plate 54 is moved to the desired required position to insure free vertical movements of the hammer and anvil it can be locked in such adjusted position by firmly setting up the nuts Bl Lateral, forward or rearward bending of the column is prevented by reason of the fact that the edges of the adjusting plate 54 closely engage the ways in which it is mounted and together with the bolts which clamp it to the plate 57 hold the plate and the annulus which embrace the column from any lateral movement. 7
Means are also provided for preventing lateral movement of the column '23. As illustrated herein suitable abutment members 68 and 69 are clamped by suitable bolts upon alined extensions 1| of the vertical walls 28 of the standards approximately in the plane of impact of the hammer and anvil.
By reason of the adjustment of the cylindrical column 22 above described proper free reciprocation of the hammer may be maintained without any such tolerance in the sliding engagement of the extensions of the hammer and anvil as would otherwise be required and accuracy of movement of the hammer and anvil at all times assured. This is particularly important in cases where the hammer and anvil are provided with complementary dies the accurate registry of which is essential.
In its broad aspect the object of the invention is to provide a drop hammer having a vertical cylindrical guiding column to insure accurate guiding of one end of the hammer with means for adjusting the other end of the hammer to compensate for expansion and contraction of the hammer and/or the anvil and which may also include lateral adjustment of the hammer about the axis of the fixed cylindrical column. Such an embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Fi .8 which shows a horizontal sectional view of the standards of a drop hammer, the hammer mounted at one. end upon a cylindrical column, and with adjustableuangularly disposed guides engaging the=opposite end of the hammer with means for adjusting the respective guides. The drop hammer construction as illustrated in Fig. 8 comprises a rectangular base 12 having a vertical standard 13 suitably secured thereto by bolts 14 and having a central arcuate wall 15 forming a recess 16 in which a vertical column 11 is mounted. The hammer 18 has an extension 19 which embraces a bushing of the character above described slidablyfitting upon the accurately turned column 11 and. insuring accurate vertical movementof that end of the hammer. The opposite end of the hammer18 is provided with an extension having symmetrically inclined angular end portions 8| and 82 which are adapted to be engaged by complementaryangular sure faces of vertical guides for the hammer 83. and 84 whichare mounted-in rectangular recesses in the other standard 85 of the frame which is suitably anchored to the b-ase'l2 by bolts 86. i
,The guidesk83. and 84 are adjustably secured to. the frame as in usualconstructions by machine screws extending through suitably spaced horizontal slots. in theguides (not shown) with shims 8'1 interposed between thej'backs of. therespective guides 83 and B4 and the vertical walls of extensions 88 of the standard, as shown in Fig. 8. Screws 89 and 90 mounted respectively in the extensions 88 at suitably spaced vertical distances apart engage the shims 81, or the guides 83 and 84 if shims are not employed. By rotating the respective screws 89 and 9|] in proper directions the guides may be so adjusted as to compensate for the expansion or contraction of the hammer when subjected to variations in tem perature and also may be so adjusted as to provide lateral adjustment of the hammer about the axis of the column 11.
In this construction suitable means may be provided for adjusting the anvil to cause proper. registration of dies carried respectively by the hammer and anvil as will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art. The invention herein described can be applied either to a drop hammer having a stationary anvil, or to a doubleacting hammer.
It will be understood that the embodiments of the invention particularly shown and described herein are of an illustrative character and that various modifications in construction and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is. claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. A double-acting drop hammer having a base, pairs of front and rear vertical standards mounted on said base, an overhead beam connecting said standards, parallel vertical cylindrical columns intermediate of the front and rear standards of the respective pairs mounted at their ends in sockets in said base and overhead beam, a vertically movable hammer, and a cooperating vertically movable anvil having end portions fitting and slidably mounted on the respective columns, a member mounted upon adjacent walls of one of said pairs of standards approximately in the plane of impact of said anvil and hammer provided with parallel horizontal guideways, an adjusting member for the .a:dia'centc;column having; annularimeansxembrac- 'ingi the column andanextension slidably fitting .said guid'eways, acting .to prevent forward or rearward deflectionzof saidcolumn, means for forcing said adjusting member longitudinally of said guidewayfto bend said column in a direction lengthwise of saidnhammer and anvil, and meansfor locking said. member in adjusted position,,andcooperating means mounted upon the other pair ofv standards engaging the column: adjacent; thereto .at approximately the plane of impact-Moi the :hammer for preventing forward or rearward deflection: of? said standard.
