This invention relates to toilets, and has to do more Yparticularly with toilets for use in automobile house trailers and like structures.
In general, automobile house trailers presently in use are not provided with'adequate toilets. One of the objects of thev present invention resides in the provision ora toilet that is leakproof, sanitary" and free of any objectionable odors.
Another object' of the present invention resides in theprovision. of a toilet wherein the water supplyfand Waste disposal systems thereof are so arranged that the pollution from the toilet of the water supply, that Vmay. bedrawn from a water source usedV for drinking purposes, washing, bathing; or 'the like, is'effectively guarded against.
A further object of the'invention resides in the provisionof an inexpensive, simple `and compact toilet thatwill occupy'a minimum of space in an automobile house trailer.
` Still 1other objects and advantages of the invention will in part be obvious and in part will hereinafter appear, and they consist generally in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts, which will be exemplied in the constructions' to be described, and of which the scope of application Will be indicatedin the appended claims.

In the event the water supply to pipe 31 is cut off and the water is drained fromthat pipe, a partial vacuumv would be pro- 'duced therein, and in chamber 28 if valveV 35 is open. When that occurs, the suction responsive valve 38 opens to admit air drawn from pipe 4I, into chamber 28 and thence into ,pipe 31, thus breaking the vacuum in said chamber and latter pipe. Further, any partial vacuum produced in chamber 28 and pipe 31 causes the check valve 3| to be held more tightly against its seat. Ac'- cordingly, this valve 3| and the suction responsive valve 38 cooperate to assure that pollution 'from bowl I5 of the source of Water supply cannot occur. That is, of course, of utmost imon one end of an elbow 16. A gasket 11 is conai ned between flanges 13-15, and this gasket 11 is provided with a check valve of substantially the identical construction of the valve 42, the
flanges 13"-15 will open, while upon ,upward movement of piston 5I, valve 42 will open and the valve between anges 13-15 will close. A pipe 18 is connected at 19 to the other end of elbow portance, as is recognized by health authorities.
The opening |42) in pump support I3 is controlled by an upwardly opening and downwardly closing valve member 42. This valve is in the forin f a gasket 43 and may be formed of an impregnated material, of leather, or of any other suitable material. The gasket 43 extends throughout substantially the full area of the upper surface, of support I3, and is clamped between such support and the out turned flange of a pump cylinder 44, which seats on the gasket 43 and is secured to the support I3 as by bolts 45,Y or-in any other suitable manner. An arcuateV slot 46 formed in gasket 43 defines the valve member 42. Metal discs 41 and 48 are secured to the upper and lower faces, respectively, of valve member 42, as by screw lmeans 49, or in any other suitable or preferred manner. The disc 41 is of Vsomewhat larger diameter than the opening |.4b which is closed by valve member 42. As will be clear from what has been said, valve 4,2 opens upwardly and closes downwardly and normally is held in a closed position.
,IA piston 5| ts snugly in pump cylinder 44 and is vertically reciprocable therein. Piston 5| comprises al pair of cup-shaped members 52-53 disposed with their backs in opposed relationship and confining therebetween a pair of pump washers or leathers 54-55, the washers I being of sufficient size to be turned over the peripheral flange of members 52-53 and disposed for sliding movement along the inner surface of the wall of cylinder 44. A piston rod 56 has o ne end threaded through the hubs 51 of members 52-53 and holds such members and washers r54---55 in assembled relationship. Rod 56 extends vertically upwardly in cylinder 44 and passes through a packing gland 58 threaded into a cylinder cover 59, whichV cover is secured to the cylinder as by the bolts 6I. The end of the rod externally of the cylinder threads into a clevis 62. An operating arm or handle 63 is disposed in unbalanced relationship between the arms of clevs 62 and pivotally supported thereon at 64. The short arm of handle 63 engages between one end of a pair of links 65-66 to which it is pivotally secured at 61. The opposite end of links 65-56 are pivotally secured at 68 to lugs 69 suitably formed on cover 59 of pump cylinder 44. Operation of handles 63 will, of course, reciprocate piston 5| vertically in cylinder 44.
Pump cylinder 44 has an integral casting pro-A jecting horizontally outwardly from one side thereof forming a pipe 1I having a bore 12 substantially the diameter ofV bore I4, the bore 12 communicating with cylinder 44 immediately above valve 42. A flange 13 formed on pipe 1| is secured, as by bolts 14, to a flange formed 16, and extends therefrom downward through the trailer floor II for discharge into a suitable bucket or container beneath the trailer or, if desired, the pipe 15 may be connected by la length of hose to any suitable point of discharge. The bore` I4, pipe 1| and pipe 16 provide a continuous discharge conduit, as will be understood.
Preliminary to use of the toilet, a substantial amount of water should be admitted to the bowl1 cylinder 44. valve 42 is closed, and the valve between flanges 'i3-15 is opened, so that the contents of cylinder` 44 are discharged under pressure through pipe 1| and then through the discharge conduit comprising elbow 15 and pipe 18. During this op,- eration the valve 35 remains open and bowl I5 is thoroughly ushed out with clean water, the succeeding upstroke of piston 5| again opening -f' valve 42, and closing the valve between flanges times, and thoroughly ushing the bowl |5, theY toilet may be maintained in a thoroughly clean and sanitary condition.
In order to prevent formation of a partial vacuum above piston 5| during its downstroke, a pipe in the form of an elongated elbow 8| is connected at one end by suitable fittings 82 to pump :cylinder 44 and communicates with the interior thereof immediately below cylinder cover 59. The vertically disposed opposite end of pipe 8| is connected to a coupling 83, which coupling 83 is connected to an elbow 84. This latter elbow is in turn connected to one end of a pipe 85 of larger diameter'located at a higherY level than the elbow 16. The opposite end of pipe 85 is suitably connected to the upper part of the bend of elbow 16 for communication therewith. A suction responsive valve 86 secured to pipe 85 controls flow of air thorugh a port 81 in said pipe. Valve 86 is of generally known construction and comprises the valve seat 88 having the port 89 normally closed by a ball 9| urged into engagement with seat 88 by a relatively l ight spring 92. Acoupling l93 connects valve 85 with a vent pipe 94, which pipe is lead generally vertically downwardly from coupling 93 and passes through a suitable opening in floor of the trailer where it is open to atmos-` phere. If the flowing of materials down pipe 18 tends to produce a siphoning action and thereby producing a partial vacuum in pipe 13 and elbow 16, the Valve 86 will open admitting atmospheric air to said pipe and elbow, thus assuring that the valve between flanges 13-15 will not be open on the upstroke of piston 5I, which, if such were the case, would destroy the partial vacuum below piston 5| necessary for the opening of valve 42.
As shown in Figure 5, the depending portion 23 of the bowl I5 may, if desired, be omitted and, instead of leading pipe 24 into the side of the bowl, the pipe may be connected through a suitable tting 95 directly to the top of the bowl to communicate with passage I9.
It will be understood that changes in detail may be resorted to without departing from the eld and scope of the invention, and it is intended to include all such variations, as fall within the scope of the appended claims, in this application in which the preferred form only of the invention has been disclosed.

In a toilet for automobile house trailers, and the like, a base structure, a bowl and a substantially vertical cylinder carried by said base structure in spaced relationship, said base structure having a bore communicating with said bowl and cylinder, a normally closed upwardly opening and downwardly closing valve controlling communication between said bowl and cylinder, a piston operating in said cylinder, the cylinder having two outlet passages opening thereinto one adjacent and one remote from the bottom of the cylinder, a normally closed upwardly opening and downwardly closing valve controlling the lower one of said outlet passages, and an outwardly closing and inwardly opening suction responsive valve associated with the other of said outlet passages effective for admitting air thereto responsive to creation of a partial vacuum in said cylinder above said piston.

In a toilet for automobile house trailers, and the like, a base structure, a bowl and a substantially vertical cylinder carried by said base structure in spaced relationship, said base structure having a bore communicating with said bowl and with said cylinder at the lower end thereof, a normally closed upwardly opening and downwardly closing valve controlling communication between said bowl and cylinder, a piston operating in said cylinder for withdrawing and discharging the contents of said bowl, the cylinder having at its lower end an outlet through which the fcontentsfof fsail1 cylinder 'are i discharged thy operation of :said piston, Jal-wastefpipe, ia s conduit connecting :said cylinder outlet with said waste pipe, o, normally closed valve iin said lconduit rior controlling vsaid i cylinderkoutlet, va `second conduit connectedbe'tw'een-said cylinderiadjacent the upper end thereof and saidwastepipegfanidianroutwardly/closing and inwardly opening suction responsive valve asSQCiated with said conduits for admitting airtosaid cylinder-andwaste pipe.

In a toilet for automobile house trailers and the like, a bowl having an outlet opening at its lower end, a reciprocating discharge pump comprising a substantially vertical cylinder .and a piston operating therein, said pump having adjacent the lower end of said cylinder an intake opening for communication with said outlet opening and a discharge opening, an inlet valve for said pump controlling communication between said outlet and intake opening, said valve opening toward said piston and closing toward said bowl, a discharge conduit comprising a member extending from and above said discharge opening, an inwardly closing and outwardly opening pump discharge valve controlling said conduit disposed below the high point thereof effective for providing a water seal above said discharge valve when the latter is closed, and a second conduit connecting said cylinder adjacent its upper end to said discharge conduit adjacent the high point thereof for delivering to said discharge conduit liquid from said cylinder above said piston and admitting air to said cylinder above said piston.

In a toilet for automobile house trailers and the like, a bowl having an outlet opening at its lower end, a reciprocating discharge pump comprising a substantially vertical cylinder and a piston operating therein, said pump having adjacent the lower end of said cylinder an intake opening for communication with said outlet opening and a discharge opening, an inlet valve for said pump controlling communication between said outlet and intake openings, said valve opening toward said piston and closing toward said bowl, a discharge conduit comprising a member extending from and above said discharge opening, an inwardly closing and outwardly opening pump discharge valve controlling said conduit and disposed below the high point thereof effective for providing a water seal above said discharge valve when the latter is closed, a second conduit connecting said cylinder adjacent its upper end to said discharge conduit adjacent the high point REFERENCES CITED The following` references are of record in the le of this patent:
