7 My said invention relates to improvements in the flushing arrangement of water closet bowls designed more particularly for use in connection with boats -where the closet is frequently located below the level of the water surrounding the boat hull, or where such level is raised temporarily above the closet by wave action, listing of the boat, etc., and the invention aims to provide a construction which will be more'eihcient in its flushing action which will be capable of ready adj ustment to accord with changed conditions of use, which may be readily cleaned should it become clogged, and which will be proof against flooding from backing up of water in the discharge pipe, due to superior elevation of the exterior water.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel construction hereinafter described, that which constitutes the invention being defined by the claims ap pended hereto.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section on line 11 of Fig. 2, and v Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2. Figures 4, 5 and 6 are sectional detail views of the check valve at the top of the discharge pipe.
drawing, the numeral 3 designates the bowl having its rim provided with the circumferential passage or conduit 3 for the flushing water which is discharged into the bowl through the ports or openings 3 The bowl is.
formed with a horizontal base extension 3 40 containing the bowl discharge passage which extension has a flat shelf-like portion on which is seated a bed portion 4: which has a passage or opening 4 which alines with the upturned end or mouth of the bowl discharge passage. Mounted on this bed plate l is a discharge pipe 5 of substantially inverted U shape, the leg 5 of which communicates with the passage 4 in the bed plate while the other leg 5 alines with a passage 4 in the bed plate by which it is connected to the Referring by reference characters to this sewage disposal pipe 6. The discharge pipe 5 is extended upwardfor a distance suflicient to ensure its upper bend being always above the level of the water outside the boat hull. The distance to which it is extended upward may, of course, be varied according tothe situation of the closet in the boat relative to the water line.
The passage 4* is preferably contracted towards its top to form a valve seat provided with a suitable packing indicated at 7 to coact with a valve 8, preferably of the ball type, which is located in a ball containing chamber 5, formed in the legportion 5 and communicating with the upward dischargepas sage therein by an outlet port 5 of less diameter than the ball valve, whereby the latter is retained within the valve chamber. This valve prevents backing up of water in the discharge pipe due to location of the closet llo elzilow the water line or wave action and the Check valves, however, can never be de pended on against leakage in pipes used for conduction of sewage, but by'reason of the U-shaped' bend of pipe 5 being carried well above the water line, if the valve should fail to seat for any reason, flooding of the bowl due to backing up of outside water iseffectually prevented. 3
It will be observed that if the U-shaped pipe 5 were left full of water atthe completion of a flushing operation and the check valve fail to effect a liquid tight contact with its seat, there would be danger of the said pipe 5 5 acting as a siphon and" drawing water in a reverse" direction with resultant flooding of the seat. To avoid this, I provide the said pipe 5 with a check valve 5 located at the top of the bend and comprising a pipe section w tapped into the bend of pipe 5 and having a valve chamber ac provided with a ball valve m designed to permit entrance of air but exclude egress of'water.
The upward discharge leg is more upwardly flaring to secure a Venturi tube effect, and
a jet passage 5 discharges water centrally into the lower end of the. said leg 5 in line with the axis thereof, with an ejector action which 1s strong enough to force the'water and sew-' 1.00
7 age upward through the discharge pipe'f and out through pipe 6 into the outside water, and to evacuate the contents ofthe bowl through said pipesl The bed portion i is formed hollow and receives water from a chamber 5 -formed on the descending legge", the lower end of which communica-tesbyalined ports with the hollow interior of the bed plate. lvater is sup plied to chamber 5 bypipe.8 .connected to any suitable flushometer or device not shown.
' vThe jet passage 5 is in communicationwi th I the hollow interior of the bed plate 'as shown at the left of Fig. 2, the water thus'supplied action.
through this jet serving to start the siphon 'T hei member 5 is provided with another passage or chamber 6 which communicates at its lower end with thehollow interior or Water space otthe bed plate 4 and at its upl per end with the water chamber 3 in the bowl rim. Said upper end is shaped to form ber5 is shaped to-provide an enlarged part which may be oit-theball type, provided with a valve seat with which cooperates a valve 9 regulating-screw 10 whereby the amount of water diverted to'the bowl rim may be regus lated or it maybe entirely cut off for cleaning purposes. The member is provided at itsupper end with a clean out plug 11.
It willibenoti'ce'd that the ball valve 'ch'am-,
' offset from the portleading "into 'thelower end of the, leg 5 the arrangement being such that when the water lifts the valveflt moves .to one side and allows unobstructed passage'ofthe contents otthe bowl under the flushing action.
- Having thus described-my inventibnwhat 'I claim 1s:
- 1. In a water closet, a bowl, a discharge;
, passage from the bowl, a water'jet for said andbowl; g V r 2. In a water .closet, a bowl,'adischarge pipe connected to the bowl outlet,'aiwat'er indischarge passage, and a valve between the jet ejector discharging into said discharge pipe,
