Description

W. BISHOP.
Water-Closets for Ve ssels. No. 141,482, PatsntgdAugust5,1873.-
m PHOTO-LITHDGR/IPHIG co. N,(0sBoRNEI9PRacEss) a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BISHOP, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-CLOSETS FOR VESSELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,482, dated August 5, 1873 application filed July 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BISHOP, of
Brooklyn, Kings county and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Water-Olosets for Vessels, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is made for injecting water into the closet, for washin gthe same, simultaneously with the withdrawing of the contents of the closet previous to projecting the same out through the vessels side or over the edge of the vessel.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section at the line 00 w.
The closet bowl or hopper is represented at a with a trunk, b, connecting from its lower end to the pump (1. This pump is operated by the lever e and the piston 0 draws the material from such closet into the pump d,- the reverse movement ejects the contents through the pipe fand over the bulwarks, or else through the side of the vessel. There is a valve, 2, that opens as the contents of the closet are drawn into the pump, and it closes as the contents of the pump are ejected, the valve 3 being provided in the pipef.
The supply-water pump his operated also by the lever e, and serves to draw water from outside the vessel and discharge the same through the pipe linto the closet, to wash the same, at the time the said contents are drawn oft by the pump 01, thereby insuring a sufficient dash of water to cleanse the closet, and this water does not remain in the closet, as the capacity of the pump 01 is greater than that of the pump h.
If the pump it is double-acting the contents of the pump on the downward stroke will be forced into the closet through the pipe I, and fill the lower part and prevent smell. The pipe m from the upper portion of the pump 11 leads to the closet hopper or basin a, so as to allow any leakage at the pump-piston to pass to the basin, and also to draw into the pump any foul air in the closet.
I claim as my invention- The water-pump h operated by the lever e, in combination with the pump at that removes the contents of the closet and discharges the same, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 15th day of July, A. D.
