SHOPPING BAG HANDLE Filed July 2, 1947 .fl. Jliazas' INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 7, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SHOPPING BAG HANDLE Anthony J. Laus, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Application July 2, 1947, Serial No. 758,589
4 Claims.
This invention relates to a handle designed for use in connection with the usual cord handles of shopping bags, the primary object of the invention being to provide means for relieving the fingers and hand carrying the loaded shopping bag, of the uncomfortable feeling of havin the usual cord handle of a shopping bag bind the fingers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a handle of this character, wherein the weight of the loaded shopping bag will be evenly distributed throughout both handles of the shopping bag, thereby preventing the weight of the loaded shoppin bag tearing the handles from the bag, due to one handle carrying the major portion of the load.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a supplemental handle of this character, which Will insure against the displacement of the handle when the shopping bag is placed on a supporting surface, with the removable handle positioned.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the handle as positioned on the handles of ashopping bag.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the handle comprises a body portion, indicated generally by the reference character 5, the body portion being constructed of any suitable material, such as wood, hard rubber or other flexible material.
.The body portion is of a length to be readily gripped by the hand and as shown is provided with recesses 6 in the lower surface thereof, that fit the fingers of the person carryin the shopping bag fitted with the removable handle.
The reference character 1 indicates a groove that extends inwardly along the upper edge of the body portion, the groove extending to a point substantially centrally of the body portion as at8, where it is formed into lateral branches 9 that have enlarged end portions III, of a diameter to accommodate the usual cord handles of a shop- 2 ping bag. Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, the cord handles of the shopping bag are held in these enlarged end portions against displacement, when a filled or loaded shopping bag is placed in an upright position on a supporting surface.
It will also be seen that because of the lateral branches 9 of the groove I, each handle rests in its particular lateral groove, andone handle is not resting on the adjacent handle, as is common in handles of this character wherein only one groove is provided for the handle.
At the ends of the body portion are grooves l I that form oontinuations of the lateral branches 9, the grooves I I being shallow and extended from the large end portions In to the lower surface of the body portion, so that portions of the cord handles of the shopping bag may rest therein to hold the handles of the shopping bag against slipping,
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a detachable handle for use on shopping bags having the usual cord handles, to provide an enlarged gripping surface to prevent the cord handles cutting into the hand of the person using the hand bag, when the hand bag is loaded.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A removable handle for cord shoppin bag handles, comprising a body portion having a groove formed longitudinally thereof, the groove being extended inwardly from the edge thereof, said groove terminating in laterally curved branches in which the cord handles of the shopping bag are held.
2. A removable handle for cord shopping bag handles, comprising a body portion having a groove formed longitudinally thereof, the groove being extended inwardly from the edge thereof. said groove terminating in laterally curved branches having enlarged ends in which the cord handles of a shopping bag are held,
3. A removable handle for cord shopping bag handles, comprising a body portion having a formed with enlarged ends in which the cord REFERENCES CITED handles of the shoppmg bag are held and the The following references are of record in the ends of said body portion having grooves commume of this patent:
