Description

' Green, in the county of Warren and State of UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. BURCH, OF BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY.
LlFTlNG-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters li'atent No. 244,848, dated July 26, 1881.
Application filed June 4, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. BURCH, a citizen of the United States, a resident ofBowlin g Kentucky, have invented a new andvaluable Improvement in Lifting-Jacks and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is arepresentation of a side elevation of my lifting-jack with the slide lowered. Fig. 2 is a view of aside elevation, showing the slide raised and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
This invention has relation to lifting-jacks; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the standard having a rectangular bearing, the oblique side braces, forked lever, stepped slide, and curved slot therein engaging a roller-bearing of said lever, all as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the standard, havingabase, a, and a rectangular bearing, b, formed between its upright ends 0 0. These ends are connected by the oblique side bars or braces, B, which extend from the upper end of the front upright, c, to the middle portion of the rear upright, 0, so that there is formed between the bars B B and uprights c a slot, cl, through which extends the slide O, the edges 0 c of which bear against the uprights o c. The upper end of the slide 0 is stepped, asindicated at g g, to suit axles of different height. The thickness of the upright c of the standard and that of the slide (3 are equal,-s0 that the sides of those parts are in the same planes, as shown inthe drawings.
D represents the operating-lever; having a forked head, h, which embraces by its branches the upright c and the slide 0. This lever is pivoted to the upright c by the bolt 70 and by the bolt k to the slide (3, the latter bolt or pin passing through a slot, 8, which extends horizontally in front, but is curved upward at its rear end, s. This slot is made of sufficient siZe to accommodate'aroller, r, which is located therein between the branches of the forked lever, the bolt orpin k passing through the roller, as shown in the drawings.
The slide (J is well braced in its bearings by means of the oblique side bars and the forked lever-head, and when in the raised position the roller-bearing 'r of the lever becomes engaged with the rear curve or recess 8 of the slot 8, so
that slide 0 becomes looked in place until the lever is raised to allow the slide and the weight thereon to descend.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- A lifting-jack having the standard-uprights c c and the oblique side braces, B, the forked lever D, the fulcrum bolt k, lever-pin k, and roller r engaging said slot, stepped slide (J, and slot 8, curved upward at its rear end therein, whereby the lever is held up in a locked position, substantially as specified.
In testimony that 1 claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
NORMAN N. BUoK, JAMES M, ADAMS.
