Section 3, Public Law 690, Augu te, 1946 Patent expires August 2, 1957 The object of the present invention is an improvement to looks of the double operation type,
1. eV of the type capable of operating either as a combination lock or as a free lock, the improvement referring especially to the type of lock comprising a movable locking member, the displacement of which is dependent upon a combination device and which operates with a bolt movable with respect to said locking member. n
The improvement according to the invention permits the realisation of a double operating lock of the type set forth, which is of a simple and robust construction and easy in operation.
The lock according to the present invention is characterized by the fact that the locking member of the lock comprises, at the end next to the bolt, a movable stop member adapted to block the bolt in the closing position when the lock operates as a combination lock, and capable of being moved clear from the path of the bolt after backward movement of said locking member into the blocking discs in the position of the selected combination, for permitting the free movement of the bolt in spite of a later disengagement of said locking member from said blocking discs and the mixing up of the combination.
The effect of this arrangement is to simplify the construction of the look while permitting the spring provided for pushing the locking member into the blocking position of the bolt to remain in a nearly expanded position during the operation as a free lock. On the other hand, this arrangement will permit an elastic mounting of the swinging or pivoting stop member, movable with respect to its actuating knob, thereby permitting, as will be seen below, to pass instantaneously and without cperatingthe combination, which may be mixed up, from the operation as a combination lock to that of a free lock.
On the drawing an embodiment of the invention has been represented by way of example.
Figures 1, 2 and 3 are diagrammatic plan views, in three difierent positions to be described below, of a double operating lock particularly adapted for drawers, suit cases, doors and the like, while Figure 4 is a sectional elevation along the plane IV--IV, partly broken away, of the right hand side of Figure l.
The lock shown comprises a locking member II4 free to move with respect to the base plate I69 of the lock and the stepped part II3 of which 3 Claims. (G1. 70-310) is adapted to cooperate in a known manner with the notches N3 of the flanged locking discs I55, I56, I51 also arranged in theform of steps and actuated from the outside by the combination'discs I55, I56, I51 (Figure 4) respectively. The front part of thelocking member II4 carries a rotating stop piece I45 adaptedto cooperate with the bolt I 42 of the lock and actuated by the pin I44. ,The rotation of this stop piece I45 is guided by a lug, I41 of the locking elemerit I I4 against which may abut either the nose I46 or the nose I48 of piece I45, while the bolt I 42 is provided on its side with an edge of a notch I49 which, when the bolt is moved downward, will strike against the nose I46 of piece I45 when the latter lies in the locking position shown in Figure 1. The piece I45 carries a slot I45 engaged by a flattened part of the pin I44 provided with a small handle I44; a spring I45" resting on the right part of piece I45 pushes the latter towards the left against the bolt I42.
In t e position of Figure 1, the locking nose I46, engaged under the notch I49 of bolt I42, maintains the latter closed; the steps II3 abut against the locking discs I55, I56, I51 and prevent any backward movement of the locking element I I4 towards the right and subsequent freeing of the nose I46.
If, in forming the combination, the slots 3' formed in the edges of the three discs I55, I56, I51 are brought in alignment before the steps I I3 and the lever I44 is pushed towards the right, the locking element H4 and the piece I45 will both be moved to the right; until the nose I46 has cleared the notch I49 of the bolt, the lever I44 will be displaced parallel to itself, it will then swing to the right and the nose I46 will then occupy the inclined position shown in Figure 2.
If the lever I44 be then permitted to return towards the left while maintained inclined towards the right, the nose I46 will abut against the side of the bolt I42, the lever I44 being in the middle of slot I45, and the locking element II4 will resume its initial position under the effect of the spring I24 (Figure 3), the steps II3 being again clear of the discs I55, I56, I51, while the combination of the latter may again be mixed up.
As long as the nose I46 is in the position of Figure 3, the bolt I42 may be actuated freely by means of its button I5I and the lock will operate as if it were not a combination lock.
When it is desired to look again the bolt, it is only necessary to rotate the lever I44 to the left; this being possible due to the presence of the slot I45 permitting the pivoting member. I45 to move elastically towards the right, the: nose M6 will thus engage again the notch I49 into which it is pushed by its spring I45", resuming the position of Figure 1; the lock can then only be opened by the person knowing and forming v the unlocking combination.
What I claim is:
1. A combination lock comprising a number oi combination discs, a number of locking discs connected with said combination discs respectively, a locking member cooperating with said locking discs and free to move towards the latter when they are in the desired combination posi.-- tion, a bolt separate from said locking member, a movable stop piece cooperating with saidbol-tt to maintain it in its closing position, means for bringing said movable stop piece in. a. position rendering the opening and closing; movements, of said-bolt. free, and operative only after moving. saidlocking member towards said locking discs: in the combination position; and means for maintaining the first said means. in said position. corresponding to; the. free movement of said bolt inorder to allow the. free movement of saidbolt to subsist: inspite of the back movement of said locking member to its initial locking position and of the mixing up of the combination discs.
2. In a combination lock according to claim 1, elastic means cooperating with said movable stop piece and permitting the latter to be brought back, without necessity of forming the combination. from its position, corresponding to the free movement of said bolt into its initial ,position in which said free movement of said REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record; in the file oi this patent;
