This invention relates in general to window construction and more particularly to a window construction in which one or more sashes may be swung in relation to the window frame to render both sides of a-sash accessible from one side of the frame.
An object of this invention is to provide compact, safe, simple and eificient means providing for the swinging of a window sash in relation to its frame quickly and conveniently to enable access to both sides of the sash from one side of the window so that it can be cleaned, painted, and repaired without leaning or climbing out of the window on the part of an operator.
.Another object of this invention is to provide novel means in a swinging window construction for conveniently, efiectively and expeditiously connecting and disconnecting a window sash and counterbalancing means therefor to enable the sash to be secured in its frame for normal sliding movement in relation thereto, disconnected and swung in one direction to an open position while remaining slidable in relation to the frame, and thereafter restored to normal slidable relation with the frame. 7
A further object of the invention includes the provision of novel means in a double-hung swinging window construction for securing one or more sashes in normal slidable relation with a frame,
disconnecting one or more of the sashes from their respective counterbalancing means, enabling sequential swingin of the sashes in, relation to the frame to provide access to both sides of the sashes from one side, of the frame while the sashes remain slidable in relation to the frame, returning the sashes to normal slidable relation with the frame, connecting them with their respective .counterbalancing means, and securing them in normal slid'able relation with the frame.
' Other objects of the invention include the provision of novel means in a window construction for disconnectibly connecting a sash and the count'erbalancing means associated therewith and for maintaining the counterbalancing means in adjusted position in relation to the frame and the sash while thesash and the counterbalancing means are disconnected. Additional objects, advantages and capabilities inherent in this invention will become readily apparent from the description thereof which follows.
This invention further resides in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while there is shown therein preferred embodiments of the invention, it is to be understood that the 7 Claims. The particular window construction herein disclosed for the purpose of illustrating the invention comprises a frame I I which maybe of wood, metal or other suitable material, having up ally'mounted therein in parallel spaced relation with one another and in operative association with counterbalancing means comprising counterweights 4, sash cords l5 and pulleys l6 which are rotatably mounted on the frame II. The frame is provided with spaced guides l1, preferably of metal, arranged adjacent the corresponding edges of the sashes 2 and i3 and in cooperative relation with spaced hinge members I8, which are secured to the sashes at the adjacent edges tlrereof. Thelhinge-"members 18 *are provided with shoes 19 which are arranged for cooperative sliding relation with the guides l1. As shown in Fig. the arrangement and con-'- figuration of the guides H, the hingememhers l8, and the shoes l9 are such a'sto provide for swinging and sliding movement of tthe:sash;in relation to the frame. To this end the guide may be in the form of an 11 or "H 'andthe-shoe conformed to engage opposite faces of adjacent portions of the guide in slidable relation therewith.

The means for operating the lever member 2| may be in the form of a slide member 3'! provided with an angulated portion 38 having a surface '39 rarrangeilito engageia corresponding surface 40 provided on the latching-portion 3| of the lever member 2|. The slide member 31 is provided with spaced arms 4| and 42 arranged in cooperativerspaced relation with a movable am 43 rigidly mounted at one end thereof on a :Sha'ftM -which is rotatably mounted in the sash. The shaft 44 is rotatable by means of a lever '45 "or aknob 46 secured on its outer end; onmay be provided with a squared opening or slot 41 for receiving a removable key 48 for rotating it. Suitable guides or stops 52, 53 to limit swinging movement of the sashes, respectively, in one direction are preferably provided in the frame, as shown in Fig. 10. A frontal stop or guide 51 is provided adjacent the bottom of the frame, as shown in Fig. l, to prevent swinging movement of the sash l3 in-its lowermost position. In order to clear this stop, it is necessary that the sash be raised to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 6. The sashes also are preferably provided with cut away portions 54 in the edges adjacent the slides I! for receiving the sash cords secured therein. Weather stripping may be provided in generally conventional manner, but preferably being arranged as indicated at 55, 56, in Fig. 10, cut away portions 58 being provided in the sashes to receive it.
The operation of a swinging window construction embodying the invention may be described as follows:
With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, the lever member 2| and the slide member 31 being in the adjusted relation shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the member 45, the knob 45, or the key 48, as the case may be, of the sash I 3, is operated to rotate the shaft 44 and shift the slide member 31 to the position shown in Fig. 9, the member 45 being shifted to the position shown in Fig. 2. The sash I3 is then slid upwardly in relation to the frame to the position shown in Figs. 2, 7 and 8, in which the latching portion and the slot are in register. Upon such operation of the slide member and the sash, the lever member 2i is shifted from the position shown in Fig. '7 to that shown in Figs. 3 and 9 by operation of the counterbalancing means, thus disconnecting the counterbalancing means from the sash and enabling the sash 7 l3 to be slid downwardly to withdraw the housing 20 and lever member from the cut away portion 50. In this connection it should be observed that the shifting of the lever member 2| occurs automatically upon the coming into register of the latching portion 30 with the slot 35. Whereupon the sash may be manually swung with relation to the frame to the position shown in Fig. 5. Thereafter similar steps may be followed in respect to the sash l2.
When it is desired to return the sashes to normal slidable relation in the frame, the sash I2 is swung back into the frame and raised to the position shown in Fig. 5. The member is then operated to shift the slide member 3? from the position shown in Fig. 9 to that shown in Fig. 7 thereby connecting the sash I2 with its associated counterbalancing means and looking it in the frame in slid-able relation therewith. The sash 13 may be returned to normal slidable relation with the frame in like manner.
Changes may :be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention, and the right is hereby reserved to make all such changes as fairly fall withinthe scope of :the followingclaims.
The invention is hereby claimed as follows:
1. In a window construction, th combination, with a frame, of keeper means on the frame, a sash mounted in the frame for swinging andsliding movement in vrelationto the frame, keeper means on the sash, counterbalancing means mounted on the frame and connecting means to detachably connect the counterbalancing means with the sash comprising, a support, a lever.mem-' ber pivotally mounted adjacent one end. thereof on the support for movement in a plane normal to the pivotal axis of the member, the lever member having opposite latching portions adjacent an end thereof remote from the said pivotal axis, an arm on the lever member and arranged in spaced relation, about said pivotal axis, with respect to said latching portions, a connecting link pivotally mounted adjacent one end thereof on the said arm for movement about a pivotal axis disposed in spaced relation with the said first mentioned pivotal axis, the connecting link having means thereon arranged to cooperate with corresponding means on the said counterbalancin means disconnectibly to connect the link and the counterbalancing means whereby the counterbalancing means will act normally to urge one of the said latching portions into latching engagement with the keeper means on the frame, the other of the said latching portions being-arranged for latching engagement with the keeper means on the sash and having means thereon arranged to cooperate with corresponding means on the sash whereby the said lever member may be operated to cause the said latching portions to engage the said keeper means on the sash and to be disengaged from the said keeper means on the frame respectively, and means on the sash arranged in cooperative relation with the said means on the said latching portion for so operating the said lever member.
2. In a window construction, the combination,
with a frame, of a sash mounted in the frame forsliding movement therein, keeper means on the frame and on the sash, sash counterbalancing. means mounted onthe frame, connecting means for detachably connecting said counterbalancing means with the sash when the same is in a predetermined latch operating position in said frame, said connecting means comprising a support movable in the frame adjacent an edge of the sash, means forming a pivot on the support, a latching lever mounted adjacent an end thereof on said pivot, said lever having oppositely extending latching portions at its end remote from said pivot, anchoring means on said lever spaced from said pivot and connected with said counterbalancing means whereby the counterbalancin means may normally urge said lever member, on said support, in a direction to engage one of said latching portions with the keeper means on the frame and maintain the other latching portion in position to be shifted into engagement with the keeper means on the sash when the same occupies latch operating position, and manually operable meansenemas connecting said counterbalancing means with said sash comprising a carriage slidable on=the frame at an edge of thesash, "a datch keeper :on the time :anda ilatchl'keeperi-omthezsash, means forming ;-a E-PLWOt :onzsaid carriage, :a .latch mounted :on naidrpivntzarrdmovable: thereon' toselectively engage rtheikeenersonfthezirame andithetkeeper sash, :means connecting the counterbalancing :meanswvith said .latchiin :position spaced from :said :pivot :whereby zto normally "urge said latchzinto latching :engagement with ithe keeper onzsaid frame, and :manually :operablezlatch actuating means, on saidsash, in position to :eng-azge and move the .iatchsh'om engagement with one not :said keepers and into engageemnt with the nthcr of1-the keepers, when said .asash ii-s :in a spredeterminedpos'ition:inisaidiirame. a
