UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEo PARKER wELLS, 0E LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,701, dated July 19, 1881,
Application filed May 18,1881. (Model.) A i To alt whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, PARKEaWELLaacitizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the State'of Massachusetts, have invented cer-V tain new and useful Improvements in Filters; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,re't'erence being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to the lettersl or figures of ret'- erence marked thereon, which Vform a part. of this specification. y y
My invention relates to a device adapted for filtering water, or the like, to be placed' upon the exit end of awater-pipe, orin otherdesired location; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter setforth, and specifically pointed out in the claims. f Y
The object of 'the invention is to furnish av cheap, simple, efficient, and portable filter, which will allow the water to be reversed through the filtering-chamber at will when iiltering the water or cleansing the material is desired, and also allow the water to pass directly through the body of the lter in an un. ltered state, when desired, as will be explained.
The invention consists, essentially, in abody the external contour of which approximates an ogee curve, said body being of any suitable metal, and preferably nickel-plated, as shown. Gast in one piece therewith is a diametrical cylindrical chamber, between which and the body is formed a chamber which extends from one side to the other, said chamber being adapted to contain the filtering material, which is preferably charcoal, but other material may be used if desired.
The cylindrical chamber mentioned connects. with the filtering-chamber by a proper aperture upon each side, and said chambers are separated by a gauze or other iinelylmeshed screen, which serves to holdthc filtering material in place. These side apertures 'are governed by a three-way valve having a, central plate, which will extend from the lower edge of one aperture to the upper edge of the other, a circular head having a cut-away portion in which is received a pin secured to the body, 'which limits the action of the valve, a circular head upon the other' extremity to close the chamber at that point, a threaded nut which screws into the body, a shank extending through said nut, and a convenient operating means upon the outside. Y
To the upper edge ofthe body,by thread-connections, is sebured a cap, which has a Seat upon the'horizontal surface ofthe body and rectangular frame,- and which is provided with a threaded connection to the house-supplypipe or faucet.
To economize metal the rectangular portion of the casting iscut away; and to prevent the water from rising at these points a disk of leather, rubber, or other suitable material having a central perforation, is placed between the screw-cap and the body, said disk Serving the double function of making the valve-chamber water-tight at these points, and also Serving as a packing for the screw-cap. From the valve -chamber an aperture leads downward through the neck to form an exit for the water.
This neck may be provided with screwthreads or other connections for attachment for further pipes.
In the accompanying-drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section; Fig.` 2, a section at right angles thereto; Fig. 3, a top-plan view, with cover and plate removed; and Fig. 4, a detail view of the valve. l
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body, of compound-ogee contour, having exitneck b, and an outwardly-extendingportion, b', carrying a fem ale-threaded dan ge, b2, which receives a cap, O, threaded at c, and havin g cen-Y tral-threaded pipe-connection, c.
Cast in one piece with the body A is a frame, B, which is rectangular for a portion of its extent, and which forms between itself and the bodyaltering-chamber,D, as shown. In this frame is formed a cylindrical chamber, H, hav
IOC
mizes metal and enlarges the chamber. A
packin g-disk, I, having a central aperture, i, is placedbetween the cap and the frame to close the openin gs b4, and to operate as apackin g for the cap C.
b5 represents an openingfrom the valve-chamber downward through the exit-neck b.
K represents a three-way valve, having a central plate, k, a head, k', upon the inner end, cut away at k2, a head, k3, upon the other extremity, a shank, 7a4, and an outer operating means, kf'.
Operating in an aperture, bf', by threaded connection, is a screw-uut, m, which partially iucloses the head kf* and operates loosely upon the shank h4, or allows the shank to operate loosely therein. rIhe cut-away portion Wreceives a pin, x', which limits the oscillations of the valve, as shown.
The operation of the device is as follows: The water entering the valve-chamber is deected through one of the side openings, h, through the filtering material, below and around to the opposite side, through the other opening IL, beneath the valve, and out through the'neck b. Wfhen the filtering material becomes dirty or clogged it is readily cleansed by changing the valve to its extreme limit in an opposite direction, which action thoroughly cleanses the material, the water thus used heing allowed to go to waste, if desired. When the valve is turned one-half its stroke the wa ter is allowed to pass freely through the device in an unfiltered condition.
I attach importance to the frame, the screwcap, and the packing-disk.
I attach importance to the three-way valve,
having cut-away portion, aud the pin for limiting the valve action.
What I claim as new is- 1. A filter having a body, an exit-neck, and a contained rectangular frame'of the form described, cast in one piece to form a filteringchamber, and a valve-chamber having side apertures connecting therewith, and being provided with aremovable top having connections for attachmentfto the source of supply, adapted to serve with a three-way valve, as specified.
2. The .body A, neck b, threaded flange b2, and rectangular frame B, cast in one piece, as shown, combined with the perforated disk I and cap C, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of the body A b b b2 and frame B, cast in one piece to form filteringchamber D and valve-chamberHh, the screens a', disk I i, cap O c', and a three-way valve, as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The valve K, composed of the central plate, k, heads k 7c3, shank lo, and handle h5, combined with the nut m and casting A B b, having threaded apertures b, as set forth.
5. The valve K, having head k cut away to form asegmental space, 7a2, combined with the body having pin x', to limit the stroke of the valve, as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
