Description
Aug. 10, 1948. G. D. EVERNDEN BEAN AND PEA POD SPLITTER Filed Aug. 1, 1947 Geafqe fiJ /vemzdeiz Patented Aug. 10, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
The present invention is directed to improvements in a device for splitting bean and pea pods to expedite the shelling thereof.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which is extremely simple in construction and will effectively operate to split the pods of beans and peas to permit the convenient removal of the kernels therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of pod splitting mechanism that can be conveniently mounted on a table or other support, and when thus mounted the pods can be successively subjected to the splitting action of a blade, whereby the kernelsmay be easily and quickly removed from the pods.
Another, and important object of the invention is to provide novel means for adjustably mounting the pod splitting blade relative to an adjustably mounted pod engaging roller in order that the pods passing over the roller may be grasped and forced downwardly during the splitting thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to provide novel means for securing the splitting blade in its operative position,
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a partial vertical sectional view through the upper portion of the blade and roller supporting head,
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the supporting head.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line l4 of Figure 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the blade and blade carrying body.
Referring to the drawing I designates a standard preferably formed of suitable gauge sheet metal and having an off-set foot 2 adapted for detachable engagement in bracket 3 mounted on the support l. Other means may be provided to mount the device on a support if desired.
The upper end of the standard I is formed with a reduced shank 5, the purpose of which will later appear.
A head 5 is provided and is formed from a single piece of suitable sheet metal, said head consisting of a front plate I, and side wings 8-8, said wings being spaced apart the distance of the width of the front plate I.
Formed integral with the wings 88 are outwardly bowed upwardly extending arms 9 which terminate in vertical plates l9, and it is between these plates that the splitting blade carrying body H is clamped. The body H is formed with a vertical slot l2, the forward lower corner of which terminates in the splitting blade l3. The body H has its front and rear edges terminating in angularly disposed flanges [4 adapted to engage the edges of one of the plates I0 to prevent swingin movement thereof when clamped between said plates by the clamping bolt l5 passing through the plates l0l0 and slot l2 of the body l I. Owing to the presence of the slot l2 the body II, and thus the blade l3 may be conveniently adjusted vertically.
The wings 8-8 are formed with vertical slots [6 and in which the ends of the spindle I! are engaged, said spindle having a clamping nut I8 on one end which is operable to hold the spindle IT in adjusted positions between the wings 88 in order that the pod engaging roller I9, rotatable on the spindle l'l, may be adjusted to vertical position.
The front plate I has its upper edge formed with an arcuate recess 20 disposed below the arms 9, the purpose of which will appear later.
In the front plate I of the head I are formed vertically spaced slots 22 and in which is detachably mounted the shank 5 of the standard I in order that the head 6 may be readily disengaged or replaced upon the standard.
In operation the pods are successively passed through the recess 20 and as they pass therefrom they are split lengthwise along their uppermost surfaces by the splitting blade l3. After having passed from the recess 20 and being subjected to the cutting action of said blade they engage the upper portion of the roller [9, and as they are passing over the roller and in contact therewith they are grasped and forced downwardly, which operation causes the pods to open fully to permit the quick removal of the kernels from the split pods.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a standard, a head mounted on the standard, said head including a front plate and spaced side wings, a roller adjustably mounted between the wings, said wings having bowed arms carried thereby and terminating in spaced plates, a body adjustably mounted between the plates and having a splitting blade thereon, said blade operating to split an article as it passes between the bowed arms and engages the roller.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1, whereby the front plate of the head has a recess formed in its upper edge in a, plane between said bowed arms to support an article as it passes between said arms to the roller.
3. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the blade carrying body is formed with flanges adapt- Number Name Date ed to engage the front and rear edges of one of 727,339 Foster et a1.
