`WASHING MACHINE.
N01 244,615. Patented July 19,1881.4
N, gemis4 mum-umugmpw. washing, DA c.
4`UNITI-:D SITI-Vrees.l PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN C. JQHNSON, OF OSKALOOSA, IVVAQ WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming pal-tof Letters Patent No. 244,615, dated July 19, 1ee1.`
' Application filed Api-i115, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may cof/wem `Be it' known that I, WARREN'G. JOHNSON of Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and Stateof Iowa, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Washing-Machines 3 and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specificanecting pins, nuts, 8vo., being of well-known construction.
I/Vith this object in view I cast in one piece. of metal a cap to fit over and be secured to the top of the vessel, a single standard having journal-bearin gs for a vertical and a horizontal shaft, a standard to operate therewith, and a downwardly-projecting `sleeve to receive and give extended journal-bearings for a vertical operating-shaft. Abeveled gear upon a horizontal shaft meshes with a bevel-gear upon a vertical shaft, the latter of which works in a sleeve and is provided with a key which oper- Vates in a semi-cylindrical recess in a stirrerplate having downwardly-proj ecting arms, to which are attached the portable stirring-arms. (Not shown.) This stirrer-plate is held in locked position with the key upon avertical shaft by a thread-and-nut connection beneath. l
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation; Fig. 2, a side elevation, partiallyin section, and Fig; 3 a top-plan view.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the cap or-v plate, having a downwardly-projecting From this elbow portion a extends a vertical standard, F', having a journal-bearing, f, for one end of a horizontal shaft, e, to whichis keyed, by a thumb-screw, the sleeve e' of a beveled gear-wheel E, as shown.
F represents a standard, cast in one with` the cap A, and having a journal-bearing, f', to receive the other end of shaft e.
It will thus be understood that the cap A, sleeve B, elbow-arm a, standards F F', and journal-bearings A' and f fr'- are all cast in 011e 'piece of metal, thus avoiding joints, which are liable to become loose and get out of order, and also being cheaper of manufacture. The wheel B is provided for more than half of its surface with cogs to form a bevel-gear, and also with laterally-extendin g flanges, which extend from the periphery inward to a line on a plane with the axis. These an ges have smooth or rounded surfaces, and protect the nut which secures the handle, which is adjustable in the slot h, from catching the clothes of persons passing.
G representsavertical shaft journaled within the sleeve B, and also at A in the elbow-arm a. Securely keyed upon it is a beveled wheel, D, which meshes with the wheel E, and it is provided with` a diametrical cross-pin, C',which rests in a semi-cylindrical groove or recess, d,
-in a plate or stirrer, D', having downwardlyextending ribs d',"as shown. rIhe shaft C is provided with a screw-thread, and a nut, G2, forces the stirrer-plate upward until the pin C' is` engaged in the recess d and forces the shaft C and stirrer-to oscillate together. Cast in one with the stirrer D' is a projection, b, which .rests upon proper washers abovethe nut.
This invention is designed as an improvement upon the device shown in Patent No.
61,343, of 1867, and the construction therein shown 4is not sought to be covered in this application.
I deem the frame furmshing four journal- IOC bearings, and a convenient cap, and also east u in one piece of metal, as shown and described,
important. I also place importance upon the ate with the operating-gear as and for the purmeans and manner of securing the stirrer to poses set forth.
the vertical shaft.
What I claim as new is- 5 The stirrerD, having semi-cylindrical recess d and arms d', the pin c and nut C2, the cap A, havin g sleeve B, standards F F', elbow-arm a and bearings A j f', said cap, sleeve, and standards cast in one piece, and the whole 1o constructed, arranged, and combined to oper- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aixed my signature 15 in presence of two witnesses.
