(o1. 16-84) The present invention has todo with door ,checks; 'It is particularly designed for outer or storm door checks, but it will be understood that it may be used with any type of. door which itis desired to checkin itsclosing movements and avoid obj ectionable slamming.
Stated generally, the check comprises a piston cylinder, having, open and choked vents fixed to the door frame and having a piston and a piston rod. Securedto. one end of the cylinder is a bracket in which is mounted a rotatable shaft carrying a spring-actuated bell crank lever assembly, one arm of which lever engages the door and the other arm of which engages the piston rod., The bracket and cylinder are adjustable relative to each other, so as'to vary the leverage .ojf gthle' bellf.,;crank lever as may be desired. The piston rod extends completely through" the cylinder so as to ensure correct piston play and proper movement of the bell crank lever, and eliminate any tendency of the piston to jam in its reciprocations in the cylinder and interfere with the proper operation of the check.
In the drawings herewith is illustrated one physical embodiment of the invention, and in said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the upper portion of a door and door frame with the check in position, the door being in closed position.
Figure 2 is a view in top plan of the check on substantially the line 2--2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, the door being shown in partially open position in dotted lines.

Referring to the drawings by numbers, the same numbers designating the same parts in the several views, a substantially U-shaped bracket I0 is provided, which bracket is adjustably mounted on a piston cylinder, as presently described. Mounted in slots l3 in the side wings of bracket [0 is a shaft having cylindrical portions M to permit it to rotate in the bracket. Said shaft is of non-cylindrical formation on either side of the cylindrical portions l4, shown shifting ofthe shaft. longitudinally in ,baajalih.

With this bell crank lever assembly it will be seen that the lever arms [6 and I1, tensioned by spring l8, will be held always in proper relation to the door and piston fork to respond to movements of the door.
Piston cylinder 24 is mounted on the door frame 25 by a support '25, and in said cylinder 24 is a piston 21 of any suitable type, said piston 21 being secured to piston rod 22 which extends through the ends of cylinder 24 and by reason of its bearings in the cylinder ends, ensures smooth travel of the piston and prevents any jamming of the moving parts. The inner end of cylinder 24 engages lugs 28 on the end wall of bracket Ill for purposes of relative adjustment of bracket and piston. The parts are held in any adjusted positions by a sleeved nut 29 threaded in an opening in the end of cylinder '24. By shifting the position of the bracket I0 relative to the cylinder 24 the relation of t e compression lever H to its contact surface 22 may be varied and the effective leverage of lever I1 altered to meet varying conditions, such as occur with doors of difierent weights or to increase or decrease rapidity of closing action.
At its inner end cylinder 24 is provided with an open vent 30, which permits piston 21 to move freely and without checking whenthe door is opened and the tensioning spring 18 moves the bell crank levers, piston rod, and piston toward here as squared portions l5, which prevents 66 under the impact of the closing door will be reand choked piston, will be retarded, slow down, movement of the door, and prevent slamming."
This checking action will be supplemented: to some extent by the tensioning spring which moves the bell crank lever to theirouter doorchecking position, but resists their return.
From the disclosure here made it will be seen that an effective door check is provided and one in which the parts may be readily made and "assembled; that the construction permits adjust- "ment-td meet varying needs, and when onceassembled, danger of derangement of the parts in use is minimized.
Such changes fromthe specific disclosure'hereinasamountonly to mechanical skill and fall within the terms of the'appended claims are to be regarded as Within'the range of the invention.
I claim:
