CHILDS GARMENT Filed April 24, 1946 LYN hf DE VRIES he ATTORNEY Patented july 27, 1948 l OFICE CHILDS GARMT V Lyn H. De vries, sanJqse, Calif.` l Application April 24, 194e, serial No. 664,610
1p1-aim. (ci. 2475) f Nfinvention relates to garments and especiali ly garments for little girls and infants.
Infants and children grow at a rate so rapid that very often fine and costly garments are outgrown long before the garment has given a reasonable measure of wear or satisfaction. This is particularly true in the case of infants and little girls dresses. Garments for little babies are necessarily made of small shoulder and chest measure in order to fit and give a neat appearance. During babyhood, growth is so rapid that within a very short time an infant will outgrow its baby dresses. In small children, the growth is proportionally rapid. While a childs garments may be readily let down at the bottom hem, to provide the increased length required to keep pace with the increasing height of the child, the growth through the body and across the shoulders presents a diierent and more diflicult problem.
The present invention is directed to the provision of adjusting means so positioned in a childs garment that the garment may be readily let out across the chest and shoulder to conform to the growth of a child.
.It is among the objects of my invention to provide a garment which may be cut large enough to accommodate a long period of growth, and which may be readily and effectively let out to obtain a proper fit and a neat appearance throughout a wide range of size.
Another object is to provide adjusting means for garments for children, which may be easily applied and adjusted, and which are positioned to give adjustment Where most needed without limiting the freedom of movement of the child.
It is also an object to provide an adjusting means which will enhance the appearance of the garment. f
rIhe invention possesses other objects, some o which with the foregoing will be set forth at length in the following description wherein is explained that form of the invention which has been selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification. In said drawings, one form of the invention is shown, but it is to be understood that it is not limited to that form, since the invention as set forth in the claim may be embodied in a plurality of forms.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a front View of a childs garment embodying my invention.
invention comprises skirt and yoke portionsfprovided with adjusting meansior varying the size across the shoulders and around the chest .of a child, to conform to the growth of the child.
invention comprises a skirt I and yoke 2,
joined along a line positioned to pass around the chest of a child. The yoke has a neck opening 3, and is provided with shoulder portions 4 connecting the front and back porti-ons of the yoke.
Sleeves 6 are attached to the yoke and skirt by means of seams 1.
For adjusting the width of the shoulder portions 4, I provide a pair of draw strings 8 in each shoulder portion. One string of each pair is secured to the garment at or near a sleeve seam, and the other near the neck opening. The strings are held in position in any `suitable manner, as for example by a band 9 sewed to the garment.` The free ends of the strings 8 extend outwardly through openings II at a point inter-mediate the points at which the strings are secured. The strings may be drawn to gather the material across the shoulder to give a desired width; and are knotted, as at I2.
The chest measurement is adjusted by drawstrings I4 applied at the juncture of the skirt I and yoke 2, at both front and back of the garment. The strings I4 are secured at one end at or near the sleeve seams l.. The `free ends meet at a point intermediate the points o1- attachment where they are tied as at It. The back of the garment may comprise two panels having a placket with suitable fasteners I1 by which the garment may be fastened at the back. In that arrangement one string I4 is carried by each panel, and the two strings meet and are tied at the center as an additional securing means. The draw strings I4, front and back, may be drawn to gather the material a desired amount, which may vary through a wide range of sizes, and which may be let out progressively to accomodate the growth of the child without materially altering the appearance of the garment.
In the case of a garment having sleeves 6, such as illustrated in the drawing, I prefer to provide draw strings I8 at the ends of the sleeves. The strings I8 may be secured at any desired point, or they may be loosely mounted to extend entirely 'around the sleeve. The strings I8 may be drawn to gather the ends -of the sleeves sufliciently to obtain a desired t, and appearance, and tied as at I9. l
The strings 8, I4 and I8 may be made of ribbon, with the knots positioned and tied to add to the ornamental qualities of the garment. Also, the bands 9 may be made `of material selected for its decorative qualities.
In the case of dresses for little girls wh-o are past the baby age, the garment lmay be gathered at the Waist by a separable belt, under which the material mayhegathered. In such garments, the yoke strings M' may be 'n0mitte'd if,- desired Withoutv seriously impairing thep garment. Length of the garment is of course adjusted in all eases front draw strings having xed ends secured at" points adjacent the sleeve openings and loose ends-"ineeting for` tying "at a point between the y2;322l`;856I lLeary July 20,` 11943 sleeve openings, a pair of back draw strings having fixed ends secured at points adjacent the sleeve openings substantially opposite the front draw strings and having loose ends meeting for tying at a point between the sleeve openings, and a pair of shoulder draw strings in each shoulder portion with xed ends secured adjacent the sleeve and neck openings respectively and loose ,ends vvmeeting for tying at `pointsbetween the sleevegandaneckfopenings.
