(01. 220-46) This invention relatesto tilting means for ash receptacle closures or the like, such as are used more particularly by tobacco smokers and with cigars andcigarettes. i l j i Much annoyance has been caused smokers in thepast by reason of 1 the necessity of inserting a finger, or sometimes a pencil, into the bowl for the ashes, cigar, stubs and cigarette butts, and such refuse in order to tilt the closure to discharge the refuse from'the hopper into the inner depository of the ash tray or smoking stand. Whethera finger or pencil be used, the operation is messy and disagreeable.

v The present invention aims toprovide a structure ot this class gembodying a tiltable closure and al tilter post carriedby the closure offset from the center of the closure so as to obstruct as little as possible .the area of discharge of the refuse ofi of the closureintothe depository and to cause a minimum of obstruction to free sliding movement of the refuse from off of the closure into the depository.

Referring in detail to the'illustrative construction shown in the drawings, the numeral ID indicates a depository for cigar, pipe, or cigarette ashes, cigar stubs, cigarette butts and such refuse, which depository may be a part of an ash tray, smoking stand or the like. Such depository is commonly provided with a cover, here represented by the numeral II, which commonly has a somewhat ornamental skirt I2 telescoping over the upper edge of the depository l and a central bowl-like portion I3. The depository l0 and cover H are generally cylindrical and the bowl portion l3 of the cover at the center of its concavity has a central opening l4 about the margin of which the bowl portion I3 is vertically downturned as at |5.

The circular central opening I4 is usually at least partially closed by the usual tiltable disc closure I6, which is also concave on its upper face I! and convex on its lower face |8 so as to conform somewhat with the bowl-like formation 13. The closure I6 may be carried by the portion l3 as in this instance by integral radial lugs IS on the closure which are loosely and rotatably received 111151013520 in the flange l5 margining the opening H. The lugs |9,ofwhich there are two, each received in a slot 20 at diametrically opposite sides of the closure, thus constitute pivot trunnions for rotative or tilting movements of the closure, and a plane through these lugs normal to the closure passes through the axisof rotation or tilting of the closure.

In accordance with the present invention, the closure It carries a tilter post 2| rigidly fixed to the closure in a position offset from the center of theclosure. In this instance, the closure has an embossment 22 on its upper face adjacent the margin of the closure and on a line coincident with the axis of tilting of the closure as represented by a line connecting the pivot lugs or trunnions l9. This embossment 22 provides a platform 23 on the upper concave face of the closure and a recess 24 on its lower oonvexface. The post"2| adjacent its lower end desirably has a conical foot 25 which rests on the platform 23 and below this thepost has an appendage or screw shank 26 whichpasses through a perfora; tion 21 in the platform 23. A counterweight 28 having therein a tapped socket'recess 29 is arranged to threadedly mate with the screw shank 26 and be screwed thereon into the? recess 24, thus 'servirigto secure the post 2|and counterweight 28ftogether and to the closure. At its upper end,the tilter post preferably has a bulbous head 30.

The, tilter post 2| is desirably of a height upstandingfrom' the upper face of the closure l6 approximately equal to a radius of the closure, so that when the closure is tilted, as shown in dotted lines, the tilter post 2| will, by contact with a margin of the bowl portion l3, as suggested in dotted lines in Figure 1, limit rotation or tilting of the closure so as to prevent the closure from capsizfng or turning all the way over, in which case undesirably the tilter post would extend downwardly and the counterweight 2! would extend upwardly. This is prevented as shown, and when tilting pressure is relieved, the closure will normally maintain itself upright in horizontal position with its concave face uppermost and with tilter post 2| extending upwardly therefrom and the counterweight extending downwardly from the lower or convex face of the closure.
