-work normally required of two using conventional tax computing charts. Further, by substituting appropriate wage tabulation schedules for the tax computing chart, in the tax calculator illustrated, the invention may be utilized to quickly and accordingly ascertain the wages due an employee.
Although the novel features which are believed to he characteristic of this invention will he pointed out more particularly in the claims appended hereto, the nature of the invention may be better understood by referring to the followingdescription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which a specific embodiment thereof has been set forth for pur poses of illustration.

Referring to the drawings, the invention is shown as applied to a wage withholding tax calculator comprising a cylinder Ill and associated shutter key board section, generally designated H. A casing t2, which may be constructed of plywood, metal, plastic or other suitable material, is appropriately shaped to enclose the cylinder and associated shutter operating mechanism as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4.
Cylinder Ill, which is adapted to carry a wage 2 Claims. (01. 235-87) and withholding tax chart I3 is positioned in the casing as shown in Fig. l. The central axle shaft M of the cylinder is suitably journaled at its opposite ends l5 in the sidewalls of the casing.
Rotation of cylinder i0 is brought about upon moving the calculator forward or backward while resting on the top of a desk 'or table, by the friction driven wheel 213. Rotational movement of this wheel is transmitted to the clinder l0 through gear 22, which is suitably secured to the drive'wheel 21) and meshes with pinion 23 keyed to the axle' shaft of the cylinder, as illustrated in Figsl and 3.
The friction drive wheel 20 is mounted on a stub shaft 25 fixed to the side wall of the casing as, for example, by means of abolt 21. The wheel 20, a'sshown inFig. 3, extends through an opening 2'9 in the bottom of the casinglaeing arranged to rest on the top of a desk or table during use, as indicated at 31.
Auxiliary wheels 33 for assisting in support- .ing and properly balancing the calculator on a desk or table are suitably journaled in the casing, being fastened thereto by brackets 34 and arranged to extend through the bottom of the casing and rest on the surface 3-! similarly as the friction drive wheel 20.
For displaying the tabulations on the chart l3, which is disposed around and fastened to the cylinder by means of a slot and wedge section 35, a dial 4!! is provided in the panel M. This dial extends transversely of the panel and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder 20 and comprises a number of open and closed slots or windows in register with the plurality of vertical rows of wage and withholding tax tabulations as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The windows 43 to the left of the dial remain open to display the wage earning columns where as the remaining dial openings 44, which display the tax figure corresponding to the number of dependents, are kept normally closed by shutters generally designated 46. Each shutter is operatively connected to a key, such as shown at 49, which when depressed opens the shutter at the corresponding dial window as illustrated in Fig. 1. The keys shown in Fig. 1 are numbered and represent the number of dependents from none to ten or more in accordance with the Federal withholding tax tabulation chart l3 affixed to the cylinder 20.
The construction and operation of the several shutters 46 are similar so that only one need be described in detail. The shutter comprises an elongated strip made of plastic, metal or the like 3 which is slidably disposed at the back of the panel 41 between the dial opening and tax chart I3. To retain the shutter in position, a guide member 52 is provided having slots 53 for receiving the shutters, as shown in Fig. 5, the guide 52 being suitably attached to the panel 4|.
For operating the shutter the lower end is connected through an L-shaped link 55 to the lever arm 56 of a finger actuated key 49. The lever is pivotally supported at its inner end to a bracket stand 58 which is of sufiicient height to permit the desired movement of the shutter upon depressing the key. A vertically disposed slot 59 in the casing is provided to allow the lever arm 58 to be actuated as shown in Fig. 4. A tension spring 60, carried by the bracket supported shaft 5| is attached to the lever arm 55 and normally maintains the key and shutter mechanism in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, the shutter being normally closed.
To operate the tax calculator shown and described for determining the amount of tax to be Withheld, assuming the cylinder l3 carries the appropriate wage and tax tabulation chart, the operator selects the key representing the number of dependents claimed by the employee and depresses it to display the proper withholding tax column on the chart I3. The calculator is then moved either forward or backward until the proper gIOSS earnings appear in the two left hand windows of the dial. The calculator is then held in this position while the tax figure showing in the opening on the dial is read. This operation is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 and will be readily understood. Friction of the drive wheel 20 on the desk automatically rotates the cylinder so as to present a different set of figures on the chart. The calculator is operated easily with one hand leaving the other free for writing. Preferably, the mechanism for rotating the cylinder is constructed in such a manner that by moving the calculator either forward or backward a few inches the cylinder will make a complete revolution.
Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described for purposes of illustration, it is understood that the same may be adapted for use with various types of schedules or charts, and that changes and modifications in the construction of the calculator may be made within the scope and spirit of the invention as defined by the following claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A calculator of the class described adapted to rest upon a desk or other suitable support, said calculator comprising a cylinder having calculating tables disposed on the face thereof, a casing enclosing said cylinder, said casing comprising dial windows for viewing said calculating tables on the cylinder, key means for selectively closing or opening said dial windows, and friction means for rotating said cylinder to present different tabulations at said windows by shifting said calculator either forward or backward upon said support.
2. In a calculator of the class described adapted to rest upon a desk or other suitable support, the combination with a cylinder having tabulations disposed on the face thereof and a casing enclosing the same provided with a dial opening for viewing said tabulations, of wheel means operable upon moving the calculator to and fro upon said support to cause a corresponding rotation of said cylinder, and key-operated shutter mechanism operatively associated with said dial opening to selectively open or close sections of said dial opening.
