To reverse. the. direction of rotation of the shaft 26, a lever 30 is located on: the side of the housing 25. adapted in the manner described, being of standard construction, has not been illustrated in detail since its construction, assembly and function are well known.
Referring now specifically to the actual rivet installing mandrel and the relationship therewith of the rotary and reciprocating units described, it will be observed in Figures 1 and 2 that the head In is disposed at a slight angle in relation to the longitudinal axis of the tool as a whole and is formed with a boss 3| having an axial bore throughv which extends the mandrel 32. This mandrel consists of a case hardened shaft whose outer end is threaded at 33 and on its opposite end is formed a head 34.
A slidable carriage 35 is mounted on the head having an unstanding leg 36 at right angles-" to the body thereof, in which is formed a cavity- 31 receiving the h'ead 34 of the mandrel 32. An.

Bearing against the rear end of the carriage 35 is a coiled spring 39, normally urging the carriage in a forwardly direction to exert a forward thrust on the mandrel 32, by virtue of a pinion 4i], afiixed to the mandrel and lying in an oblong recess 4| (Fig. 3) in the facial portion of the carriage leg 33. A plate 42 overlies the spring 39 enclosing the same against dust and foreign matter.
Disposed also in the oblong recess 4| is a pinion 42 of analogous diameter to and enmeshing pinion 40. This pinion 42 is mounted on the end of a shaft 43, spaced from but disposed parallel to the inclined upper surface of the head I 0. The upper end of shaft 43 is slidably retained in a sleeve 44 by means of a pin 45 on the shaft which enters a longitudinal slot 43 in the sleeve. The sleeve 44 is a part of a universal joint consisting of the sleeve and a complementary sleeve 41, mounted on the end of the shaft 26 of the air motor contained in the housing of the rotary unit. In order thatthe mandrel 32 may be reciprocated, this motion is applied to the carriage 35 by means of a lever 48 which is pivoted in a cavity 49 in the head III by means of a transverse pin 50. The upper end of the lever operates in a recess 5| in the underside of the carriage 35 and its opposite end is engaged by the protruding end of the plunger I! of the squeeze tool earlier described. Thus it will be seen that as the plunger I1 is advanced against the lower and rounded end 52 of the lever 48, the latter will be rocked on its pivot and will move the carriage 35 rearwardly against the resistance of spring '39, thereby retracting the mandrel 32 to accomplish the function to be presently explained.
The type of rivet adaptedtobe installed by the described invention-is shown in longitudinal section in Figure 1 as securing together juxtapositioned work pieces 53 and it will be assumed --than; the. side of the work assem-blyopposite-the' tool is inaccessible or blind. The rivet 54, consists of a hollow, cylindrical body, interiorly threaded a predetermined depth opposite its head 55 which may be convex as shown, or other shapes. The boss 3| of the head lfl has a recess 56 of a shape corresponding to the type of head on therivet so that the head will lie wholly or partly in the recess.
To fasten the rivet in a hole, drilled through the juxtapositioned plates 53, the rivet is first placed on the threaded end 33 of the mandrel 32 while the latter is being rotated by the air motor of the rotary unit in a clockwise direction through the shaft 43. The rivet, while mounted on the mandrel, is thrust into the hole, whereupon the valve 24 of the squeeze tool is opened to introduce air under pressure into the cylinder, actuating its piston'l l, thus advancing the cam I5 against the roller 22 of link 2| to exert a forward thrust on plunger 11. The forward end of plunger I! bearsagainst,thelever.48 31; its lower end to -rock the same-on ft's pivot; thereby retracting the mandrel 32 witha force sumcient V. to collapse the walls of the rivet 54, creating an annular head 51 therein flush against the inner 'plate of the work "assembly 53 on the "blind side thereof.
After satisfactorily clinching the rivet 54 in the manner described, the direction of rotation of the mandrel 32 is reversed by actuating the lever 300:; the side of rotary unit housing 25. This action reverses the air motor which drives gears 40 and 42 in the opposite direction through shaft 43, causing the inandrelto bedriven, by means of pinion 42in a counter-clockwise direction which retracts the same from the threads of the rivet 54, leaving the latter intact in the work pieces, binding them in fixed relationship.

What is claimed is: V
1. Apparatus for installing hollow, internally threaded rivets including a body having a head provided with an undercut track, a threaded mandrel rotatably'and reciprocally mounted on said head to threadedly receive a'rivet and having a gear on one endfthereof, a carriage slidable on said trackfor actuating said mandrel, an air motor carried by said body, an extensible shaft operated by said air motor having a gear en.- gaging the gearof said mandrel for rotating said mandreljto engage a rivet, means in saidbody for retracting: said carriage to correspondingly movesaid motor shaft and mandrel to collapse saidrivet in a work piece assembly and means for reversing said air motor to effect threaded withdrawal of said mandrel from the installed rivet.
