F. A. TABER.
LAMP.
No. 244,407. Patented July 19,1881.

I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
: .FREEMAN A. TABER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of-Letters Patent No. 244,407, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed May 13, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREEMAN A. TABER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of ,the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a class of oil-burning illuminating-lamps for steamships, railwaycars, &c., in which the oil-fount is contained within a hollow case and both fount and case are separable from or movable with respect to the frame or bracket by which the case is suspended from the ceiling or wall of the apartment, such frame or bracket serving to uphold the globe and shade of the lamp while the fount and case are separated from them to permit of ready access to such fount for the purpose of filling, cleaning, or lighting the lamp.
The invention consists of the ring or supporting-frame, the suspensory rod having a laterally-extending pin, and a case containing the lamp-fount, and provided with a bearing or pocket which has a vertical slot and aside slot.
It also consists of further details of construc tion and combination of parts, as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
The drawings accompanying this specification represent, in Figures 1 and 2, sectional elevations of a bracket-lamp containing my improvement, Fig. 1 representing the lamp in a closed state, and Fig. 2in an open state. Fig. 3 represents a detail view of the bearing or pocket, showing the longitudinal slot and the curved. side slot, hereinafter described.
In these drawings, Arepresents an open horizontal ring'adapted to support the globe B of the lamp, and which, when in use, is secured to the wall of an apartment by a bracket, 0, the said globe serving also as a chimney to provide the requisite draft for the lamp-burner.
A designates a lower ring attached to upper ring, A, and supporting the fastening device for holding the casing of the fount in its upper position, as hereinafter described.
D represents the oil-fount, E its burner, and
Fthe hollow cup-shaped case which contains the fount. A v
In carrying out my present improvement I secure to one side of the annulus A a pendent vertical rod or suspen sory, G, and I provide the interior of the case F, at one side, with a vertical bearing, a, to receive and slide, as well as to turn axially upon, said suspensory G, the construction and relation of the two being such that the case and its fount may be lowered vertically upon the rod below the annulus A until the burner of the fount clears the lower side of such annulus, when the case and fountmay be together turned axially upon the suspensory, to one side of said annulus, into a position free from obstruction by it, and permit cleaning, filling; or trimming of the lamp to be performed with ease and -celerit'y. The said vertical bearing or pocket at is of cylindrical form, and has a longitudinal slot, at, and a horizontal side slot, a the latter being connected with the upper end of the former. A pin, G, on the side of rod G, near the lower end of the latter, sets in longitudinal slot to, allowing the case F to be moved vertically up and down on said rod. When said case reaches its lowest position the said pin isat the upper end of slot a, and when an axial or partial rotary movement is given to said case said pin passes into side slot, a and of course allows the case to turn freely, besides supporting the same. When the lamp is to be returned to its normal position the above-mentioned axial movement is reversed until the pin G is again in slot 0.. The case F is then moved vertically upward, sliding on said rod with pin G in slot to until the upper edge of the side of said case opposite to rod G comes in contact with the beveled lower edge of the inner end, h, of fastening-rod or catch H, which works horizontally through ring A. This contact forces said rod back out of the way. As soon as annular bead F, formed on the upper part of ease F, passes above said catch the latter is forced in below it by hand or spring pressure, or in any other convenient Way, thus fastening said case and the fount in their normal position.
An instance of the class of lamps to which my present improvement pertains is shown in Letters Patent of theUnited States numbered 236,108, and issued to myself on the 28th day of December, A. D. 1880. In this patented lamp I employ the suspended frame for sup- 'porting the globe and shade and the oil-fount and its supporting-case, as described in my present application; and I employ also in said patented lamp two oppositely-disposed hanging rods, upon which the fount and case are adapted to slide vertically and drop below the annulus in a vertical plane. In this patented lamp the fount, when lowered, is more or less obstructed by the annulus and globe; and my object in employing one rod and adapting this rod to perform the functions of the pintle of a hinge, upon which the fount and case may turn axially, is to avoid all obstructions to the labor of cleaning, filling, or trimming the fount and its burner.
In some instances Iem ploy an ordinary chimney instead of the globe B and its draft-cap. In this case the chimney should be removed from the burner before the oil-fount and its case are lowered.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with ring or supportingframe A and suspensory-rod G, the case F, having a bearing, a, formed therein to receive said rod, said bearing and rod allowing the vertical and axial adjustment of said case, sub stantially as set forth.
2. Case F, containing the lamp-fount and provided with pocket a, which has a vertical slot, at, and a side slot, a ,in combination with ring Aand suspensory-rod G, having laterallyextending pin G, substantially as set forth. 3 5
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
