The present invention includes an improvement on the subject matter of my former inveni tion vdisclosed in U. S. Letters Batent No. 1,956,299, datedApril 24, 1934. l

.Objects of the inventionfareto provide-a truss of simple, economical construction which will be strong and durable and which includes a back pad having a rear face offset forwardly particularly along the entire lowerportion thereofwith "the, main upper portion` ofsaid-rear facebulged tect the clothing from undue wear by being brought into forced contact with said fastening means.

A particular object is to provide a truss having spring side members connected at the forward ends thereof to a yoke arranged to have mounted C thereon holding means for a hernia pad, and said side members oppositely curved to extend around a portion of the body, and to provide a padded sheath covering each side member, the rearwardly presented ends of which are enlarged and have inserted therein a plate with means to detach ably secure the rearwardly presented end of each side member to one of said plates to form a, highly ecient back pad.

In the drawings there is shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention, it being understood that the invention is not confined to the exact form shown and that changes and modifications may be made which come within the scope of the claims hereinafter set forth.

A plate I5 composed of sheet metal or other relatively stiff material is shaped to conform to the desired contour of the back pad hereinafter described. In the adaptation of the invention shown in the drawing, the plate I5 has a relatively wide rounded end portion I5a tapering to a relatively narrow end |517. The plate I5 is stamped forwardly from the rearwardly presented side thereof to form a depressed seat I'G which extends therein from the narrow end |51) thereof and is disposed in spaced relation to the upper edge thereof. 'Ihe seat I6 has an outline corresponding to the end portion of the adjacent side member, 1 or 8 which fits therein.

The entire lower portion I5'c of the plate I5 is offset forwardly to extend in a plane spaced forwardly from the plane of the rear face of the upper portion I5d of the plate. The upper portion I5d is preferably bulged rearwardly with the edges thereof curved forwardly to the plane of the lower portion ld.

A plate I5 is positioned in the cavity I2 of the enlarged end portion of each sheath 9. One of the side members 'I or 8 is entered through the open end of each sheath 9 and is positioned therein with the rear end thereof entered in the seat I6. Efachside member 1 or 8 is provided with apertures which coincide with threaded bores I1 in the plate I5 and suitable screws IS are entered through apertures in the rear wall IB and through the apertures in said side members and are operatively secured in the threaded bores I1 to securely hold the sheaths 9 on the side arms -'I and 8.

As shown in the drawing, the seat IB is of sufficient depth to position the head of the screws I9 forwardly of the rear face of the upper portion I5d. The outer wall I0 being formed of leather or other flexible material, readily con- 3 forms to the contours of the rear face of the plate I5.

While I have shown a pad formed by the sheath 9 and'plate I5, it is to be understood that the pad portion may be molded in one piece or otherwise formed to present a rear face having a similar arrangement of surfaces.

Having thus illustrated my invention and described the same in detail, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isi 1. In a truss of the character described and having a connecting strap, in combination, a back pad having'a transversely vextended rear member depressed and offset forwardly along the entire length of the lower extended edge portion thereof, and means projecting rearwardly from said depressed lower portion and to which the connecting strap may be attached, and said latter means being wholly below the rear surface of said pad.

In a truss of the character described, a frame having end portions terminating in spaced relation at the back of the truss, a back pad on each end portion having a substantially rigid rear member, said rearl member for each pad having a vl r`lateral extension which is depressed and offset forwardly along its entire circumferential length, a strap connecting said pads and extending lengthwiseA along said lateral extension, and means on the depressed and offset lateral extension of onerof said rear members for detachably securing the strap thereto.
