UNITED STATES 'PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER BEAUDRY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
POWER-HAMM ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,370, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed March 3, 1881.
(No model.)
To all whomA it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER BEAUDRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power-Hammers and I do hereby declare that the sameare fully described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements on power-hammers, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, on which- Figure 1 represents a plan View. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section on the line A B. (Shown on Fig. l.) Fig. 3 represents a crosssection on the line C D. (Shown on Fig. 2.)
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
a a are are the frames, provided with suitable stay-bolts b b b, as shown.
c is the sole-plate, to which the lower ends of the frames c a are secured by means of suitable bolts and screws, and d is a piece of wood or other suitable material interposed between the bottom of the frames aa. and the top of the sole-plate c.
e is the anvil, securedto the sole-plate c, and provided in its upper end with the die e'.
f is the vertically-movable ram, having the dief in its lower end, as shown.
g g are vertical guides for the ram f, which guides are secured to the forward ends of the frames a a, as shown. The ram f is provided with a vertical and central cylindrical recess, h, which is closed at the top by means of the perforated plate or cover i secured to the top of the ram f by means of suitable screws. In the cylindrical recess h. is located a pair of coiled springs, 7c and l, one above and the other below the collar, nut, or projection m", thatis secured firmly to the lower end of the rod m,
which passes freely up through the perforated cover t', as shown. The upper end of the rod m is jointed to the forward end of the spring n, that extends backward above the frames a a, and is bent, as shown, and secured ,to the rear end of the tail-piece o, that forms a rear extension of the frames a c, and is fastened to the latter by means of screw-bolts p p. The
rear end of the spring nis secured in an adjustable manner to the tail-piece o by means of the screw-bolts Q and Q passing through holes in the tail-piece, and provided on the under side with the respective nuts g and q', as
shown.
R is a socket-head on the upper end of the screw-bolt Q, and B. is a similar socket-head on the upper end of the screw-bolt Q. The rear end of the spring n is inserted into the said socket-heads R and R', and secured therein by means of the set-screws r and r or equivalent means.
About midway between the boltsQ and Q is located on the tail-piece o the rocker-piece S, upon which the spring n rests, as shown on Fig. 2. By this arrangement I am enabled to adjust the position of the spring u as may be required in hammering thick or thin forgings. In the former case I loosen the nut q and tigi. ten the nut q, thereby causing the forward end of the springmas well as the ram j, to be raised. In the latter case I loosen the nut q and tighten the nut q', thereby causing the forward end of the spring n and its ram f to be lowered more or less, as maybe desired. The spring u and the ram j' are set in a reciprocating motion up and down by means of the crank-shaft s and the connecting-rod t, the upper end of which is jointed to the couplingpiece u, secured to the .spring n, by means of the-set-screw u or equivalent device.
T is a right-and-left-screw-threaded nut uniting the screw-threaded ends t and t of the rod t, by means of whichthe latter may be lengthened or shortened in proportion to the adjustment of the rear end of the spring n, as above-set forth. v
s' s are bearings for the crank-shaft s, which bearings are secured in a suitable manner to the rear of the frames a a, as shown.
v is a balance-wheel on the crank-shaft s, and w is a pulley on said shaft, which is set in a rotary motion by means `of belt-power, as usual.
The operation of this my improvedbelt-hainmer is as follows: By imparting a rotary m0- tion to the driving-shaft s the connecting-rod tis given a vertically-reciprocating motion, and with it the spring n, and by means of the rod m, its collar m', and the coiled springs k andi IOO the ram fis caused to ascend and descend in rapid succession with a powerful and yielding stroke, and in such a manner that the ram will ascend immediately after the blow is given on the forging, this being caused by the compression of the upper spring, k, during the descent of the ram. The compression of the lower spring, l, during the latter partei' thc upward stroke tends to increase the force of the blow of the ram.
This improved hammer can he run without much frictional resistance, and consequently with very little power as compared with other belt-hammers now in use.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is- 1. In combination, the frames a a., anvil e,
reciprocating ram f, with its springs la and l, the rod m m', U-shaped spring at, rotary crankshaft s, and connecting-rod t, joined in its upper end to the spring n btween its fixed and free ends, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the spring u and tailpiece o, the adjustable screw-bolts Q Q', nuts q q', socket-heads R R', and rocker-piece S, for the purpose of adjusting the rise of the ram f above the anvil e, as described.
In testimony whereof I have axed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER BEAUDRY.
Witnesses ALBAN ANDRN, HENRY GHADBOURN.
