By axially moving the sleeve 22 with respect to the shaft 2|, the sleeve may be rotated to vary the tension of the springs to a desired degree and to maintain the same upon reverse axial movement of the sleeve and intermeshing of the teeth 33 and 34.
The outer end of the shaft extends beyond the outer end of the sleeve and is formed with a circumferential groove 35 in which is disposed a split resilient removable ring 36 for precluding axial movement of the sleeve relative to the shaft .thesleeve 22, the teeth of said case and end intermeshing to preclude relative rotation of the shaft and sleeve as in the instance of the embodiment disclosed in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive.
In order to facilitate application of the ring 36 into the groove 35, the outer end face of the shaft is provided with a conical recess 56 for receiving therein the conical end 5| of a spreading tool 52 having a cylindrical portion 53 of a diameter coincident with the diameter of the shaft and defining a shoulder or end face 54, adjacent the conical portion, for butting engagement with the outer end face of the shaft, whereby, an expanded ring 36, contained on the cylindrical portion 53, may be moved over the outer end of the shaft and snapped into the groove 35 as clearly illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings. Without further elaboration the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and sub-combinations.
fined to the therein described use therefore as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation, which are capable of extended application in various forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
