SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,288, dated July 12, 1881.

' conveniently packed for transportation and set up on their arrival at their destination. The constituent members of such barrows are usually turned out after patterns in the factory, and shipped in compact bundles to the consignees, who unite said members by means of carriage bolts inserted through holes with which the several parts are provided. In setting up the said knockdown barrow for use considerable difficulty has been experienced in properly uniting the constituent parts, owing to the frequent variations in the size of the traysmade by the manufacturer, and also by the warpingand shrinking thereof during their transportation. The result has been that the tray had to be refitted and sprung or forced approximately into its requisite position on the barrow before it could be secured to the usual front and rear stays, the position of which was fixed by the location of the bolt-holes in the handle to which said stays are attached.

It is to obviate the aforesaid difficulty which my invention has chiefly for its object, and to attain this I resort to the following construction:

The invention is fully illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wheelbarrow, and Fig; 2 is a transverse vertical section of same on line a: 00.

H represents the usual straight handle, extended the length of the barrow and having journaled toits forward extremity the wheel W.

B B are two braces bolted to the side of the handle and united at their foot to form the legs of the barrow. The rear brace, B, projects above the handle and forms thereby the rear stay for the tray.

T denotes the tray, of the usual form, its rear end-board being secured to the extension of the brace B, as aforesaid, by means of bolts passing through the said parts, the forward end-board being bolted to the forward stay, A, which consists of a piece of board usually secured in a definite position on the handle H by carriage-bolts b b, inserted through certain holes a a provided in the said board and handle, the rear edge of said board being properly shaped to receive the forward end-board of the tray, which is secured thereto by a bolt, 0, as shown. In order to render the said stay adjustable, so as to accommodate trays of various sizes, and properly fit and sustain the same, I provide the said stay A with a series of boltholes, a a, or an elongated hole or slot, for the reception of the bolts 1), thus allowing said stay to be set up to the tray, instead of forcing the tray to the stay.

Heretofore the tray was supported only by the handles H and the front and rear stays before described, said stays in some instances consisting in extensions of the legs of the barrow. The weight, therefore, came directly onto the bolts which fasten the legs or braces B B to the sides of the handle. In order to relieve said bolts to a great extent of the aforethe stay A and bring its extremity to abut against the under side of the bottom board of the tray, thereby bringing the weight of the tray to bear directly on the end of said brace, as best seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

Having described my improvements, what I claim is- 1. In combination with the handles H and tray T, the adjustable stay A, provided with slots or a series of bolt-holes, a a, and the bolts b, substantially as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with the handle H, provided with the stay A, and the tray T, resting on said handle and stay, the brace B, terminated back of the stay A and having its end abutting against the under side of the bottom board of the tray, substantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and set forth.
