JOSEPH HAMMERL, OF HUNTERS POINT, NEW YORK.
GRAINING- MACHINE.
SPEQIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,125, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed March 26, 1881. 7 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH HAMMERL, of Hunters Point, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Graining Ma chines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved machine for grainin g the surface of articles of 1c wood in a quick and uniform manner, the machine being especially designed for graining doors, refrigerators, and other articles having large exterior surfaces.
The invention consists of a supporting-frame I 5 having exterior sidewise projecting handles, of a color-distributing roll at the rear part of the same, of an adjustable color fountain above the distributing-roll, of an elastic engraved graining-roll at the front part of the machine, and of an intermediate transmitting- 3 5 which is made of two triangular side plates,
which are stiffened by transverse stay-rods a and provided with exterior handles, 1). The graining-machine'is conveniently taken hold of at the handles and applied to the surfaces 0 which are to be grained.
At the rear end of the frame A is arranged a color-distributingroll, B, above which is supported a hopper-shaped color-fountain, B. The lowerissuingorifice of the fountain B is placed 4 5 in direct contact with the surface of the colordistributing roll B, and provided with mechanism for being adjusted closer to or farther away from the roll B, so as to regulate the terial, the surface of the same being engraved with the grain to be transferred.
Intermediately between the color-distributin g and graining rolls is arranged a transferring-roll, D, which is placed in contact with the color-distributing and graining rolls B and C, so as to take up the color from the one and transfer it to the other.
The color-distributing roll B, as well as the transferring-roll D, is provided with an equalizing-rod, d, which extends transversely across each roll and forms contact therewith, one being arranged above the other below the rolls, as shown in Fig. 2, by which the supply of color to the graining-roll can be accurately adjusted, and thereby not only the smudging of the grain by a surplus of color on the grainingroll be avoided, but also the color utilized in a more economical manner.
By the arrangement of the hopper-shaped color-fountain above the distributing-roll there can be no spilling of color in the usual handling of the machine, while, also, a less quantity of color is supplied to the distributing-roll than by an open color-vessel below the roll.
I am aware that graining-machines having a color-fountain and distributing and graining rolls have heretofore been used, and I do not claim them, broadly. I am also aware that adjustable scrapers have been used heretofore but in the machines which used these elements heretofore the articles to be grained had to be carried to the machines, which were of a stationary nature and used for specific purposes, while my improved graining-machine is portable and applied by hand to the articles to be grained, so as to be adapted for a larger variety of work than the graining-machines heretofore in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- As an improvement in graining-machines, the combination of a supporting-frame having sidewise-projeoting handles, of a distributing- Y roll, of an adjustable color-fountain above the same, of a graining-ro1i at the front end of the frame, of an intermediate transferring-r011, and of adjustable equalizing-rods arranged. in connection with the distributing and transferring rolls, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres- 1o ence of two witnesses, this 3d day of March, 1881.
J OS. HAMMERL. Witnesses:
PAUL GoEPEL, CARL KARI.
