Claims.
This invention relates to a machine for making preformed packing and has for an object to provide a machine suitable for the manufacture of preformed packing. I
A further object of this invention is to provide an inexpensive and simple device which is pedaloperated for making preformed packing, the packing being especially intended for use in electric cable stufiing tubes, eliminating the necessity for the previous method of hand packing the stufiing tube about electric cable. Hand packing head tube packing made, according to this invention, through the tubes before the cables are installed. V
A further object of this invention is to provide a machine for making preformed packing suitable for use in glands or stuffing tubes of any nature. With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, claimed and illustrated in the drawings in which: a

There is shown at H] the packing making machine of this invention which includes a table I I supported on legs l2 having foot plates [3. The side legs l2 are connected by braces M which in turn support a cross brace l5. Mounted on the table II is a pair of vertical beams [6 which in turn rigidly support a bridge plate 11. Adjustably and fixedly secured to this bridge plate 11 by means of a threaded end I8 is a mandrel 20, the mandrel extending vertically downward and amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. wherein is slidably supported a gate 24 adapted to be moved to open and close the table opening 2|. The gate 24 is movable to open and close table opening 2! by means of a lever 25 pivoted to the plate 22 at 26 at one end and provided with an operating handle 21 at the other end.
Supported over the table opening 2| by means of a flange 28 is a cylinder 30 surrounding the lower end of mandrel 20. The inner diameter of the cylinder 30 is greater than the diameter of the mandrel 23 by an annular amount substantially equal to the annular thickness of the preformed packing 3| shown in Fig. 5 which is made therein. 7 7 An annular plunger 32 of a size to slidably fi about mandrel 20 and into the cylinder 30 is supported on the cross strips 33 of a vertically mov able platform 34 adjustably mounted on the vertically movable rods 35. These rods at their upper ends extend through the bridge plate l'l, being provided with nuts 36 for adjustably limiting their upward movement. Pistons 31 secured at the upper ends of rods 35 on top of coil springs 38 within spring tubes 4|! serve to keep the rods 35 at the top limit of their movement permitted by the adjusting nuts 36 beneath the bridge plate IT. The lower ends of rods 35 extend through suitable openings in the plate 22 and table I I and end in inturned fingers 4| extending into a triangular lever-42 whose apex 43 is pivotally secured to a foot lever 44 having a pivotal connection 45 on the cross brace l5. The other end of lever 44 is provided with a foot pedal 46. Obviously this machine can be modified" to be power operated instead of pedal operated.
In operation the springs 38 normally hold the plunger 32 at the upper limit of its movement. When in this position, packing material is manually wound about that portion 26' of the mandrel 2! which is visible between the top of cylinder 36 and the bottom of plunger 32. In one form of packing made by this machine a strip of packing of hard consistency is first wound about the mandrel portion 26' and then foot pedal 46 is depressed, causing plunger 32 to force this first portion of packing into the annular space between the bottom of the mandrel 20 and the inside of cylinder 36 on top of gate 24. The pedal 46 is released, permitting the plunger 32 to be raised by the springs 38 to its original position. Apacking of softer consistency is then wound about the mandrel portion 20' and then compressed against the first portion only within cylinder 30. A third portion of packing material of a consistency similar to the first portionis then placed on the mandrel portion 26 and compressed against the previously compressed portions of packing. The pack: ing 3| is thus completed and then the handle 21 is grasped to cause the lever 25 to open the gate 24 whereupon the pedal 46 is depressed again, causing the completed packing 3| to be discharged through the table opening 2 I, whereupon the machine is empty, ready fora new preformed Other modifications and changes in the number and arrangement of the partsniaybe made by those skilled in the art without departing from the nature of this invention, within the scope'of what is hereinafter claimed.

A preformed packing machine comprising a table,- a gateway extending through said table, a gate for closing said gateway, a cylinder mountedon said table across'said gateway and having oneend adapted to beclosed'by said gate, vertical supporting means extending above said table, a bridge extending across said verticalsupporting means, a mandrel depending at one end'from said bridge and having its'opposite en'dextending into s'aidcylinder concentric therewith and annularly spaced therefrom, said oppositeend of said mandre'l substantially coinciding with the lower end of said cylinder, a plunger slidably mounted about said mandrel and adapted to be moved into and out of the annular space between'said mandrel and said cylinder, means for slidably supporting said" plunger about said mandrel comprising a platform to which said plunger is removably secured, rod means slidably extending through said table and said bridge, said platform being socured to said rod means, means limiting the upward movement or said rod means, means yieldably limiting the downwardmovement of said rod means and normally holding said rod means at the upper limit'of its movement, and operating means for moving said r'od means downwardly tothereby move said plunger along said mandrel into said cylinder, said operating meansincluding a-lev'er pivoted to the bottom of said rod means and a pedal fulcrumed below said table and pivoted to said lever whereby a packing material may be wound about an exposed space on said mandrel between said plunger and said cylinder while said plunger is at its upper end of its movemerit and may be compressed into said cylinder by depressing said pedal and thereafter may be discharged therefrom by operating said gate to open said gateway. A preformed packing machine comprising a table, a supporting means on which said table is mounted, a gateway extending through said table, a gate iorclosing said gateway, a cylinder removably mounted on said table across said gateway and having one and adapted to be closed by said gate, Vertical supporting means extending above said table; a bridge extending across said vertical supporting means, a mandrel removably and adjustably depending at one end-"from said bridge and having its opposite endextendi-ng into said cylinder concentric therewith and ain-iularly spacedtherefro'rn, saidoppositeend of said mandrel substantially cdinciding with the lower end of-said cylinder, a plunger slidably mountedabout said mandrel and adapted to be moved into and out off the annular; space betweensaid mandrel and said cylinder, means for slidably supporting said plunger about said 'ma'ndrel comprising a platform to which said plunger is removably secured, rod means slidably extending through said table and said bridge, said platform being adjustably secured to said rod means, means adjustably limiting the upward movement of said rod means, means yieldably limiting the downward movement of said rod means and normally holding said rod means at the upper limit of its movement, and operating means for moving said rod means downwardly to thereby move said plunger along said mandrel into said cylinder, said operating means including a lever pivoted to the bottom of said rod means and a pedal fulcrumed to said table supporting means and pivoted to said lever whereby a packing material may be wound about an exposed space on said mandrel between said plunger and said cylinder while said plunger is at its upper end of its movement and may be compressed into said cylinder by depressing said pedal and thereafter may be discharged there'- from by operating said gate to open said gateway.
