1 1 Claim.
The invention relates to the execution, on flat knitting machines with sinker bar of theCotton type, of unravelable edges according to the method described by the applicant in his prior United States Patent No. 2,313,294, dated March 9, 1943, which consists in that the row or one part of the row of loops which it is desired to render unravelable is submitted, when finished, to a transfer of every other loop by an amplitude of two needles, 1. e. on the needle following its neighbour, each needle having one loop and one out of two loops being transferred by two needles while the other loop is not transferred.
The invention relates more particularly to the execution, on each of both lateral parts of the sole entrance (that is to say of both parts of the beginning of the sole lying outside the instep or front part of the foot), of the unravelable edge adapted for their later connection with the tongues of the heel in the making of stockings, half-stockings or socks with a French heel comprising the leg and the foot made in a single operation on the frame.
The invention permits to effect this operation with simple means without any supplementary complication of this kind of frames by using, for this purpose, and without modifying its system of transfer and of feeding, the narrowing attachment designated under the name of toe attachment" in the frame with French foot.
The invention has for its subject matter improvements which consist. in that one uses for the execution of the unravelable edge of the lateral sole entrance parts (or of the unravelable edge of any lateral parts symmetrically arranged in a knitted article), the transferring hook bars or combs of the toe attachment; in that the said bars which are, for this purpose, set apart from the centre of the needle bed are arranged so that in each pair the wide transfer comb and the narrow transfer comb are in contact on their adjacent lateral faces, and in that each pair of combs is combined with a notched covering knife showing a notch opposite one out of two transferring hooks on the transfer combs.
The invention will be better understood owing to the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof shown diagrammatically in the appended drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the device used for the execution of the unravelable edge, and
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Referring now, more particularly to the drawings, I represents .the needle bed with a fixed ance April 7, 1944 central part of a Cotton knitting machine and 2 the needles.
3 and 4 are the wide transferring hook bars or wide combs, of the toe attachment and 5 and 6 are the narrow bars or narrow combs of the said toe attachment; 1, 8, 9 and I0 are the flat rods on which said different transfer combs are screwed respectively; H are the transferring hooks and I2 are lateral covering knives, i. e. blades mounted, for instance pivotally, on an axis l3 so that they can be brought to insert themselves at the desired moment between the transferring hooks II and the needles 2. Said knives are notched so as to show a notch for every one out of two transferring hooks, thus permitting the loops to be taken on every other needle.
In order to render unravelable the first course of the sole on the widths Z corresponding to the lateral entrance parts of the sole, the transfer combs 35 and 4-6 are set apart from the centre of the needle bed and brought to the position shown in Figure 1 without leaving any space between the adjacent lateral faces of the bars 3-5 and 64. The lateral notched coverin knives l 2 are brought into the active position and through the co-operation of the ordinary toe attachment with the notched knives l2 one causes every other loop to be taken and transferred from its needle to that following its neighbour,
this transfer taking place in the direction shown by the arrows, i. e. from the outside to the inside. Thus, one obtains a total symmetry. Furthermore, by judiciously selecting the needles on which the lateral knives l2 must act, any risk of transfer of loops outside the selvedges is avoided. v
The axis l3 on which the lateral notched knives 12 are mounted can be a supplementary axis. It can also be the same as that of the ordinary toe covering knife l4. In this case, an angular shifting is provided between the lateral notched knives l2 and the plain middle knife I4 so as to permit to bring them successively into the working position. For the execution of the unravelable row, the lateral notched knives l2 are in the working position and the middle knife 14 is behind the plane of the needles, which is possible owing to the fact that there are, at this moment, no transferring hooks opposite the knife l4. During the execution of the toe, on the contrary, the transfer combs 3-5 and 64 having been brought back to the centre, the middle knife I4 is in the working position while the 3 lateral notched knives 12 are in front of the needles, which causes no interference.
I claim:
In a. knitting machine of the character described, in combination, a needle bed, a frame, a toe mechanism onttheframe comprising two pairs of transfer combs having transferring points, each pair including one wide comb and one narrow comb, the pairs of combs being spaced on" the frame in such a manner'tha-tgforz'eachpair the lateral adjacent faces are in contact, andia notched covering knife coacting'vvith'narihioneajf v the pairs of transfer combs throughout the, length of both combs, each'kni'fefheingnotchedi so as to show a notch for every one out of two transferring points, thus permitting'loopsito-be; taken on every other needle during the working of the unravelable edge of the lateral parts-of the sole entrance of stockings,
JEAN GARRIC.
