Application February 13, 1943, SerialNo. 475,818
The present invention-relates to new and usefiul improvements in buildings, primarily of the dwelling typ and has for its principal object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, anovel prefabricated structure which is adapted to be expeditiously erected on the site and which, if desired, may be readily disassembled .or knocked down and transported to another location.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a lightweight building construction of the character described wherein the usual studs, plates, et cetera, are omitted, thereby saving considerable in material and labor.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a lightweight building construction of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple, strong, durable, Weatherproof, attractive in appearance, and which may be manufactured, transported and erected at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a, building constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the roof,
Figure 3 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 1, showing a floor plan of a, dwelling.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view in vertical section through a modified structure.
Figure 7 is a view in vertical section through one of the bay windows.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section, showing the mounting of the windows in the double wall structure of the modification.
Figure 9 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the roof framing of the modification.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference numeral I designates generally a floor structure. The floor structure 5 includes a plurality of slabs 2 of suitable material, said slabs being provided with depending marginal flanges 3. The floor structure I rests on suitable supports 4.
2 Claims. (01. 20-2 The walls '5 of thebuilding comprise substantially semi-cylindrical corner portions 6. Be tween the corner portions '6, the walls 5 may be provided with doors and windows 1 and 8, respectively.
Extending downwardly into the substantially semi-cylindrical'corner portions '6 from the tops thereof are openings 9 for bay window units It! of angular horizontal section. The jambs ll of the windows ill have formed therein grooves or channels l2 (see Fig. 3) which slidably receive the adjacent vertical marginal portions of the wall portions 6. The windows ID are installed prior to the application of the roof.
The roof of the building is designated generally by reference numeral l3, said rOOf being substantially square in plan and projecting beyond the walls in a manner to provide a substantial overhang and cornice, as at Id. In the embodiment shown, a porch roof I5 is also provided, said porch roof being supported by c01- umns or posts I6. The roof structure [3 further includes a multiplicity of sections in the form of trays I! which, if desired, may be utilized to receive and retain water to assist in cooling the building. Leakage at the joints is of the trays I1 is prevented by hoods or shields l9 mounted thereover.
The building may be divided into rooms, closets or other spaces 20 by any suitable arrangement of partitions 2|. As best seen in Figure 5 of the drawing, the upper portions of the partitions 2| are firmly secured in the joints [8 of the adjacent trays I! of the room structure l3. Also, the lower portions of the partitions 2! are retained between the adjacent floor slabs 2.
In the construction illustrated in Figures 7, 8 and 9 of the drawing, a floor structure 23 includes slabs or sections 24 comprising depending marginal flanges 25 having webs 26 extending therebetween. A suitable joint 21 is provided be tween the slabs 24.
Double walls 28 rise from the floor structure 23. The walls 28 rest on seats or shoulders 29 which are provided therefor on the outer marginal portions of the floor structure 23 and are secured thereon by bolts 30 anchored in said floor structure.
The roof structure 3| comprises prefabricated frame sections 32 of suitable shape, dimensions and material which may be firmly secured togather in any desired manner, as at 33. Mounted above and below the frame sections 32 of the roof structure 3| are cover and ceiling slabs 3'4 and 35, respectively. Referring to Figure 7 of the drawing, it will be observed that certain of the joints of the roof frame sections 32 receive therebetween the upper portions of the partitions 36. A baseboard 31 is provided on the walls 28 and the partitions 36.
It will thus be seen that a prefabricated, lightweight building has been provided which may be easily transported to the desired location and expeditiously erected with a minimum of unskilled labor. The construction and arrangement also is such that the building may be rapidly taken down, if desired, for transportation to another site.
It is believedthat the manyadvantages of a lightweight building construction in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although preferred embodiments are as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that further modifications and changes in structural details may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
1. A building of the character described com prising side walls having open-top window openings extending downwardly thereinto from the tops thereof, bay window units slidably engaged in said window openings, said bay window units including side jambs having vertical grooves therein forreception of the edges of said side walls at the sides of said openings, and a roof 4. laid over and contacting the tops of said side walls and said bay window units.
2. In a prefabricated building, side walls including substantially semi-cylindrical corner portions having open-top window openings, a roof structure mounted on said side Walls, and bay Window units having side portions slidably engaging the portions defining the sides of said openings and movable downwardly in the assembly of said units, said roof resting on said units in assembled relation.
