  • An automobile door lock comprising a spring latching bolt, an outer handle connected with a roll-back operative to release the bolt, a slidably mounted roll-back locking plate, a relatively narrow shoulder on the roll-back with which the locking plate coacts when in roll-back locking position to lock said roll-back and outer handle against movement, an inner handle, a link connection between said inner handle and said locking plate for moving same to and from said roll-back locking position upon predetermined movement of the inner handle, a lost motion connection between said link connection and said bolt for retracting the bolt upon further movement of said inner handle after moving said locking plate from roll-back locking position, and rotatable key operable means for moving the locking plate from roll-back locking position, and means limiting the movement of the locking plate by the key operable means from said roll-back locking position to a distance substantially equal to the width of said shoulder.
  • An automobile door lock comprising a spring latching bolt, an outer handle connected with a roll-back operatively engageable with the bolt for releasing same, a slidably mounted rollback locking plate, a relatively narrow shoulder on the roll-back with which the locking plate ooacts when in roll-back locking position, a key operated rotatable spindle, cooperating means carri-ed by the locking plate and spindle operative to release the plate from engagement with the shoulder upon rotation of the spindle in one direction, stop means operative upon rotation of the spindle in said one direction to arrest its movement when rotated through an angle of less than 90 and with corresponding movement of the locking plate a distance substantially equal to the width of said shoulder, and means for automatically returning the spindle to normal position for removal of the key.
  • An automobile door lock comprising a bolt mounted in one edge of the door, an associated slidably mounted plate movable relative to the bolt for unlocking the bolt in one position of the plate, an outer handle operated roll-back engageable with the slidable plate for moving it to said bolt unlocking position, a second plate having a lost motion connectionwith the first plate and movable relative thereto for dogging the rollback, an inner handle having a normal inoperative position, a link connection between said inner handle and said second plate for moving same to roll-back locking position upon predetermined movement of the inner handle in one direction from said normal position and for undogging the roll-back and unlocking the bolt upon movement in another direction from said normal position, and key operable means operative from the outside of the door and having lost motion connection with the second plate for moving said plate to roll-back undogging position, and said second plate being thereafter movable by the roll-back to restore the inside handle to its normal posttion when the i-lrst plate is being moved to bolt unlocking position by the outside handle.

Referring now in detail to the drawings by the use of reference characters, D designates an automobile door, a panel of which is suitably recessed to accommodate the lock mechanism about to be described. A housing baseV plate I is secured to the inside of the door over `the recess therein and includes a right angular flange II, the ange II being secured in a recess in the free edge of the door and the plate I0 being secured to the door as at I2, and the ange II is apertured for reception of a latching bolt I3.
The bolt I3 is movably disposed within a recess I4 in a locking or dogging plate I5 which plate is slidably retained on the housing plate I0 by means of a guide lug I6 and an angularly bent edge portion of the housing cover plate II. The locking bolt I 3V is rigidly carried by a bolt plate I8 having shoulders I9 at its rear edge which are normally yieldably maintained against stop lugs 20 on the housing base plate I 8 by means of a spring 2I engaging the locking bolt I3.
A stud 22 is carried by the bolt plate I8 and projects through an elongated slot 23 in a link 24, one end of which is connected to the locking plate I as at 25. A lost motion connection is thus provided between the bolt I3 and the operating link 24 for reasons later to appear. The locking plate I5 `is movable by the inner handle with the link 24 to outside handle flogging position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and to undogged position by the key, as indicated in dotand-dash lines in the same ligure.
This clogging and undogging arrangement is similar to that of my patented structure referred to, but as distinguished therefrom the locking plate is movable Va relatively short distance with a corresponding slight movement of the connected parts so that substantially less frictional ment of the inside handle 32 which positively shifts the link 24 for dead-locking the roll-back against movement and thereby locking the handle 26. When the plate I5 is shifted to the position indicated by dot-and-dash lines in Fig. 1 however by movement of the key in one direction, the normal bolt retracting movement of the roll-back 28 is permitted. The plate I5 is preferably providedwith spaced notches I5a for selective reception of a detentjspring I5 for yieldably retaining the'plate in locked or normal position.V
The locking plate I5 is moved to either the roll-back dogging or/ undogging positions by 'drag on the key results. The major operations of the locking and unlocking movements are thus transferred to the handles. l
The outside door handle 25 supports on the squared shaft 2'I thereof a roll-back 28 having a projection 29 and a relatively narrow shoulder 30, which are substantially at right angles to each other. The projection 23 is engageable with the bolt plate I8 for retracting the bolt I3 upon downward movement of the outside handle 25, and the shoulder 30 is engageable with a shoulder 3| on the locking plate I5 when the plate is in its forwardly moved position as illustrated in yfull lines in Fig. 1 occasioned by upward lifted movemanual up and down movements of the inner handleV 32, and is movable to undogging and dogging positions by means of an outside operated key mechanism in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
For moving the plate I5 of Fig. 1 by the key mechanism an obliquely ,positioned lug 33 is disposed on the plate I5 and is engageable by a iinger 34 carried by the key operated lock spindle part 35 having a, squared operating shaft aperture 36.
To the inside of the door D and laterally of plate I0 is secured, as at 31, a mounting plate 33 in which plate and bracket 38a is journalled the inside handle actuated shaft 39 which carries a lever 48 to the free end of which ispivotally "connected, as at 4I, one end of an operating link 42. The opposite end of the link 42 is pivotally connected at 43 to the link 24, whereby the locking plate I5 is selectively movablejto roll-back clogging and undogging positions.
Rigid with the shaft 39 is a block 44 having an extension 45 on which is secured the Vhub 4B of the inner handle 32 Awhich upon movement in an upward direction moves the plate I5 toa forward roll-back locking position through shaft 39, lever 40 and links 42 and 24, and which upon down` ward movement shifts the plate I5 to the rear or roll-back unlocking position. The handle upon further downward movement moves link 24 rearwardly until the stud 22 engages the forward end. of slot 23, whereuponvthe bolt plate I8 and its latching bolt I3 are retracted. Y
The lock according to the present invention includes means for latching the inside handle 32 in deadlocking position and while being generally similarto that disclosed in my patent, diiers therefrom as will appear in the description following. The block 44 is provided with an aperture 41 extending transversely to the shaft 33 and through which aperture extends a swinging bolt 48. The bolt 48 is pivotally mounted inter-V mediate its ends, as at 49, within the aperture 4'! and with its opposite ends projecting beyond the block as clearly` indicated in Fig. 4. One end of the swinging bolt 48 is yieldably maintained against the keeper ange 50 on an angle plate 5I secured to the plate 38, as at 52, by means of a plunger 53 extending through an arcuate slot 53 in plate A38, `which is urged against the other end of the swinging bolt by means of a coiled vspring 54 disposed within a housing 55 secured as by a clip 55 to one end of the shaft 39, as shown in Fig; 1 and directly against the plate 38 as will be later described in connection with Fig. 9. The lever 98 is preferably so pivoted and connected with the link mechanism that the member |02 is normally concealed as indicated in dot-and-dash lines at IIlIr in Fig. 'when link 42 has moved to such extent-as to undog the roll-back 23 whereby is provided a convenient and dependable visible indicator as to whether the roll-back is dogged or undogged. However, when the locking plate I is in normal operating position, as in Fig. 9, the signal will be at the position wir, and of course the signal will drop still further upon retracting the bolt I3 by the inner handle.
In accordance with the embodiment of the invention disclosed in Figs. 9 to 16 inclusive, the previously described .structure is substantially simplified while at the same time rendered more efficient particularly from the standpoint of latching and unlatchingthe inner handle and the connecting means with the locking plate for the outer handle. In these figures all of the parts corresponding to those above referred to in .connection with Figs. 1 to 5 are designated by like reference numerals, and only those parts differing from the rst embodiment will be particularly described.
In accordance with this preferred embodiment of the invention, the plate I5 is provided with a lug which is generally L-shaped and embodies a finger engaging portion |05 and an opposing finger engaging portion |06. The lock spindle 35 is .yieldingly retained in normal key receiving position, as shown in Fig. 9, by means of an elongated leaf spring member |01 having one end thereof engaged with the spindle, as at |08, and the other end thereof movably received in a slot |09 in the head of the stud IIB, rotatably supported in plate I0, as by a reduced portion III. The slot |09 has opposed convex walls for engagement by the opposed faces of the' spring upon rotation of the spindle 35 to which the spring is attached. By this means the spindle is normally maintained in the position of Fig. 9.
The spindle is further provided with a finger is provided with a second finger II2 which isv engageable with the lug portion |06 upon movement of the spindle in an opposite direction for moving the locking plate to clogging position.
The arm 'I3 and link II function as in the first embodiment with arm I3 engaging a stop I9 upon retraction of the locking plate to the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 15. The
link 42' is,` however, substantially different ink construction as well as function from the corresponding link 42 in the first embodiment. kThis link, which in common with link 42, interconnects the locking plate I5 and the inside handle now further functions to support and guide the cam bar 64', which in the rst form, is supported by an angle plate 5| secured to the fixed plate 38. Accordingly, the movable link 42"is formed with a bottom cam bar supporting ange I I3, Fig. 1l, which is provided with an elongated slot II4 forr slidably receiving a lugV or screw member I5 secured to the under side of the cam bar.
The cam bar 64' is also provided at one side with a second screw member I I6 which is slidable in an elongated slot I I I in the link 42'. A spacer sleeve IIB, through which the screw ||6 extends may be provided between the link 42 and the link 'II' to maintain parallel relation therebetween, as shown in Fig. 11. l Y
In accordance with this latter embodimentof the invention, shown in Figs. .10, 13 and 16, ,the swinging latch bolt Vof the inner handle 32 is modified in the provision of a laterally extending foot portion 9, from the lower face of which projects a rounded holding or dogging lug |20. This lug |20 is automatically engageable in a notch I2| in the forward edge of fixed plate 38. When the bolt 48 is swung to one limit of its movement the plate 38 preferably will be further cut out as at |22 to provide for better action of the cam bar 64'.
The simplicity of this embodiment, as compared with the rst described embodiment, will be appreciatedupon comparison of Figs. 2 and 11. In Fig. 2 the link 1I, which actuates the cam bar, crosses over the link 42 whereas in the present embodiment links 42 and II are parallel and the cam bar is supported for reciprcation directly on the link 42', thereby omitting the fixed angle plate 5I of the first embodiment, etc.
Furthermore the arrangement just described provides a better balanced construction, and by providing the straight linev 'Il' and movable bolt mounting, less resistance is offered to the turning of spindle 35by the key.
The mechanism is shown in normal position in Fig. 9 with locking plate I5 retracted a distance equal to the length of the projecting bolt I3 and in which position the stud 22 is at the right hand end of slot 23, whereby the bolt I3 may be directly retracted upon downward movee ment of the inner handle 32.
In Figs. 15 and 16 the locking plate I5 is shown in solid lines in roll-back clogging position and the lug |20, of swinging bolt 48 engaged within the notch I2I of xed plate 38. The inner handle is thus shown latched or dogged against movement until the lug |20 is again retracted, either by the key or the button 63, and thus moved to the undogged position on the face of the plate 38, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 16.
The foot ||9 on the swinging bolt 43 serves to limit the depression or movement ofthe lug |20 through the notch |2I so that the lower surface of the lug is supported or engaged by the bevelled end surface 64`of the cam bar 64 for easy lifting of lug and bolt 48 from the notch |2| upon slight movement of the cam bar thereunder, by the link 1I and arm 13; all as indicated in brokenV lines in Figs. 15 and 16. 13. The structure according to claim 12, wherein opposed walls of the slot'are convex for rolling engagement of theleaf spring, therewith.

An automobiledoor lock comprising abolt slidably mounted in an edge of the door, an out.. side handle and an inside handle mounted on the door for independent operation, lost motion operating meansA connecting the -bolt with'A said handles, dogging and undogging means for each handle connected tothe inner handle for operation thereby, and key operated means mounted in the door adjacent the outer handleland carried in part by said lost motion means, said last mentioned means being associated with each handle to also move the doggingand undogging means to secure or free both handles by the key operated means. An inside latching boltoperating handle mechanism Vfor automobile doors comprising a mounting plate having `a recess therein, an inside handle secured to a shaft rotatably journalled in the mounting plate, anuelongated bolt pivotally supported by the shaft for swinging movement relativeY to the plate and confined by the shaft for rotative movement therewith, yieldablemeans bearing against one end of the bolt for urging the other end thereof against the mounting plate, `a lug carried by said other end of the bolt engageable in said recess upon movement of the handle in one direction to a pre-determine'dposition for holding the handle against movement in a reverse direction, and movably operable means supported by the handle and shaft for releasing the lug from the recess against the action of Vsaid yieldable means. 16. Thestructure according to claim 15 wherein said bolt is pivotally supported in an aperture in a block rigid with the shaft and disposed at one side of the mounting plate, and wherein said Ayieldable means is supported by the shaft at the opposite side of the mounting plate.
lltAn inside latching bolt operating handle mechanism for automobile doors comprising a rectangular mounting plate having an arcuate slot therein, a bracket secured to one face thereof, a handle rigidly supported by a shaft rotatably journalled in the plate and bracket, a block rigid with theV shaft and engaging .the face of the plate opposed to the bracket, an aperture in theblock, a bolt disposed within the aperture and confined by opposed Walls thereof for rotative movement with the handle, said boltY having the opposite ends thereof projecting beyond corre- .sponding ends of the-block and being pivotally supported thereby for swinging movement in a plane normal to the plate, yieldable means supported by the shaft outwardly of the bracket and including a plunger extending through the arcuate slot in the plate and engaging one end of the bolt for urging the other Yend thereof toward the plate, an abutment supported bythe plate engageable by saidV vother end of the bolt upon movement of the handle to a pre-determined position in one direction, and manually operable means supported by the handle and shaft for rreleasing said bolt from the abutment for movement of the handle in a reverse direction.
18. The structure according to claim 17 wherein said abutment is provided by a'notch in one edge of the plate, and wherein said bolt is provided with a lug engageable inthe .notch upon movement of the, handle .to said predetermined position- .1.;
19. The structure according to claim 17 wherein said shaft rigidly supports a lever disposed between the plate and bracket for pivotal connection with a latching bolt operating link.
20. Inside handle latching bolt operating mechanism for automobile doors comprising a mounting plate, a shaft rotatably supported in the mounting plate and having an inside handle secured thereto, a bolt pivotally supported by the shaft and rotatable therewith, yieldable means rotatable with the shaft operative to urge one end of the bolt toward the mounting plate, cooperative engaging means carried by the plate and bolt operative under the action of said yieldable means to lock the handle against movement when rotated to a predetermined position, a latching bolt operating link connected with said shaft, and key operable means slidably supported by said link for releasing said cooperative engag ing means.
21. Combined latching and signaling means for the horizontally swingable sash of an automobile door having an adjacent sash, comprising a keeper secured to the swingable sash and having a free end spaced from the swingable sash and providing a camming surface, a latch pivotally mounted on the door for swinging movement in an arc adjacent the lower edges of both sashes toward and from the keeper and operative to force the swingable sash closed upon engagement with said camming surface, and an indicator movably carried by the door and operable with the latch on engagement with the keeper to move the indicator into a position within the margin of one of the sashes so as to be visible from either side thereof and to be retracted from said position so as to be concealed upon movement of the latch out of engagement with the keeper.
22. Combined locking and signaling means for an automobile door having a window, comprising a bolt mounted in an edge of the door, an outside handle and an inside handle mounted on the door for independent operation, lost motion means connecting the bolt with said handles, clogging and undogging means for each handle connected to the inner handle for operation thereby, key operated means mounted in the door adjacent the outer handle and carried in part by said lost motion means, said last mentioned means being associated with each handle to also move the dogging and undogging means to secure or free both handles by the key operated means, and an indicator connected to the lost motion means for peration by said clogging and undogging means to move the indicator to positions within and without the sight range of the window for indicating from both sides of the door the condition of the bolt operating parts for operation of the handles.
23. An automobile door lock comprising a spring latching bolt, an outer handle connected with a roll-back operative to release the bolt, a slidably mounted roll-back locking plate, a relatively narrow shoulder on the roll-back with which the locking plate coacts when in roll-back locking position to lock said roll-back and outer handle against movement, an inner handle, a link connection between said inner handle and said locking plate for moving same to and from said roll-back locking position upon predetermined movement of the inner handle, a lost motion connection between said link connection and said bolt for retracting the bolt upon further movement of said inner handle after moving said locking plate from roll-back locking position, and rotatable key operable means for moving the locking plate from roll-back locking position, and means limiting the movement of the locking plate by the key operable means from said roll-back locking position to a distance substantially equal to the width of said shoulder.
24. An automobile door lock comprising a spring latching bolt, an outer handle connected with a roll-back operatively engageable with the bolt for releasing same, a slidably mounted rollback locking plate, a relatively narrow shoulder on the roll-back with which the locking plate ooacts when in roll-back locking position, a key operated rotatable spindle, cooperating means carri-ed by the locking plate and spindle operative to release the plate from engagement with the shoulder upon rotation of the spindle in one direction, stop means operative upon rotation of the spindle in said one direction to arrest its movement when rotated through an angle of less than 90 and with corresponding movement of the locking plate a distance substantially equal to the width of said shoulder, and means for automatically returning the spindle to normal position for removal of the key.
25. An automobile door lock comprising a bolt mounted in one edge of the door, an associated slidably mounted plate movable relative to the bolt for unlocking the bolt in one position of the plate, an outer handle operated roll-back engageable with the slidable plate for moving it to said bolt unlocking position, a second plate having a lost motion connectionwith the first plate and movable relative thereto for dogging the rollback, an inner handle having a normal inoperative position, a link connection between said inner handle and said second plate for moving same to roll-back locking position upon predetermined movement of the inner handle in one direction from said normal position and for undogging the roll-back and unlocking the bolt upon movement in another direction from said normal position, and key operable means operative from the outside of the door and having lost motion connection with the second plate for moving said plate to roll-back undogging position, and said second plate being thereafter movable by the roll-back to restore the inside handle to its normal posttion when the i-lrst plate is being moved to bolt unlocking position by the outside handle.
